I've little doubt part of it was the upkeep, but I think the real culprit that killed the ride was the fact that at the time, Disney didn't own a lot of those movies, and as such, I would not be surprised to discover that the cost of the licensing for those properties was starting to outweigh the benefit they received from them. That was at a time when IPs were starting to become very valuable assets for studios, and I don't think Disney wanted to showcase nor pay for the IPs of other studios.

I think it would have been cool if they replaced everything with Disney related movies. This way it could stay in Hollywood and carry on the legacy. The following is what I would have done with it ...
