What If…. Season 2 [GAME THREAD]

I honestly think they're going to end up moving Muppet*Vision to the Sunset Showcase. It just makes so much sense, especially given the Showcase is right next door to Rock 'n' Roller Coaster.
I also think this is the case. But the Electric Mayhem RnRC will be great. It’s the perfect idea, and a fantastic compromise in the meantime that keeps Muppets around and gives them new life.

Its especially great that Disney won’t have a ride starring a sexual predator and child trafficker anymore.

PROJECT 004

“live from Sunset Blvd”

Welp. Recent developments sure have a remarkable sense of timing. This has been the planned fourth project all along.

Sunset Blvd at Disney’s Hollywood Studios has a very musical atmosphere for the most part. The Theater of the Stars showcasing live musical entertainment, Rock N Roller Coaster literally beating tunes into rider’s heads, and the symphonic majesty of Fantasmic that serves as the climax of a day spent at the park.

And then there’s that other ride.

Yes. Today we are going to commit theme park blasphemy.
Would you expect anything less from the conductor of the Chaos Verse?!

Teams,

Your task is to design a brand new music based attraction on the plot where Tower of Terror currently resides. This can be any type of attraction or experience you want. In this version of DHS, Tower of Terror simply no longer exists; the plot is blank and flat and ready for you to develop!

This project is due,….

Oh what’s that? What about Lightning McQueen Racing Academy?

.
.
.

Yeah I guess we should replace that too.

Teams,

Your additional task will be to replace Lightning McQueen Racing Academy with some sort of music themed flat ride!

This project is due Wednesday, December 4th at 11:59 Disneyland time.

LONG OVERDUE REVIEWS

My apologies for taking so long. It is Black Friday week which means I am mentally and physically overwhelmed. But here I am!

Something I found interesting is that both teams chose to begin their experiences at the Dreamport. And funny enough, eight years ago when I did my own reimagining of this attraction, I did the same thing.

IMG_5569.jpeg

I hope Disney is paying attention.

Both teams also kicked around the idea of simply restoring the original attraction. Ultimately neither team went in that direction and honestly I’m grateful. We all love the original version of the ride, but this was a chance to do something different - and both teams were successful in different ways.

Anyway! On to our projects!

TEAM ROGUE

Restoring the original color palette is a nice touch. It’s a subtle way to pay homage to the classic pavilion while still making it your own. The exterior description invokes lovely imagery in my head, this is a place that exudes joy!

I love that you utilized the rainbow corridor to lead guests into the new lobby. Once again, it’s a way of using classic elements in a new way.

The decision to make the pavilion a space designated for exploration was a bold and creative one! Often when this pavilion is discussed, the primary focus is exclusively the dark ride. So it’s nice to see something radically different thrown in.

I really like that you made the Dreamport a central hub and then once again took inspiration from the original ride to create these new explorable spaces. There is a clear focus here on using multiple small scale experiences and attractions to bolster the ride lineup and I really appreciate that approach.

My favorite element of your entire project might be the paper forest and carousel! As a kid I always wanted to be able pause the ride at this area. Being able to actually experience it as a fully developed area would be a dream!

The kid friendly drop tower in the literary area is a perfect fit. Bringing back the School of Drama is a fun touch. I agree that modern technology could make this a fun and intriguing addition with a great deal of repeat experience value thanks to the randomness. And I actually really like the idea of an exhibit space. Modern EPCOT doesn’t really have that anymore so why not put one here?!

I would absolutely love to dine in the Imagination Planetarium. I’m glad you addressed the obvious comparison to Space 220 and make sure to distinguish this experience.

And on top of that we have a trackless dark ride!

Wandering Thru Imagination is a solid concept that I wanted a bit more detail from. It almost feels like maybe this didn’t need to be an actual ride but could have been a self-guided attraction or even an Omnimover. The section with the Rube Goldberg machines is the stand out section for me. This fits perfectly in the Imagination pavilion, and perhaps could have been the central feature of the ride; a series of machines that guests can interact with. Of course I’m always a sucker for anything related to space so I’d be quite happy seeing aliens at the end.

A theater show about the history of theater is a neat idea. I can’t think of another occasion where that’s been done. Would this be in the Magic Eye Theater?

All in all this is a solid effort with a lot of strong concepts and ideas that I really enjoyed. Thank you!

TEAM PHOENIX

The Disney fan site vibe of your presentation is very fun! It feels authentic and offers a unique lens to walk through your works.

I love the inclusion of so many references and Easter eggs from the original ride being present in your version of the Dreamport. It’s a good way to acknowledge the history of the attraction while giving context to the new ride.

The preshow room is a nice touch and I am absolutely obsessed with Chimera! Her inclusion here nicely expands the cast and gives Figment some character development; allowing the character who was dreamed up in the original attraction to dream up a creature himself.

Making this a suspended dark ride was a fun idea, although I don’t know if it was the best ride method based on the scenes as they’re presented.

I do truly love these scenes you chose; exploring visual art, music, mythology, and TV/film production all feel like logical topics for the attraction. I like that some of this is rooted in the original attraction, and other elements are inspired by other classic rides, but it all still feels fresh and unique. The scene depicting common dreams has a surrealist quality that just doesn’t exist in a lot of modern attractions. Although having a vivid depiction of teeth falling out would be very unsettling!

And I absolutely love the finale! Chimera getting to create something brings the whole story of the ride full circle. There’s a lot of really wonderful, zany fun to be had here.

I really appreciate the effort that went into the Creative Kitchen. Both teams chose to add restaurants to the pavilion and I think that’s a great idea to take advantage of the mostly empty upper floor. And I love that this is a kinetic experience that is not just a place for people to grab a bite to eat. It feels extremely exclusive but in a good way; like getting to experience it would be a rare highlight for guests. This menu has a ton of variety, and all of it is very imaginative! I’ll have the Citrus Dust Eggplant Puffs and the Watermelon Tacos plz!!

Okay and I’m obsessed with Moon Channing getting a flat ride! That is just fantastic! I want Moon Channing to be in more things.

Journey into Imagineering is a lovely touch! Being able to sit down and create attraction ideas while in the midsts of all this Imagineering history feels like the ideal location for the members of this community to hang out. It feels like this could maybe be a replacement for One Man’s Dream, albeit in the wrong park. But I almost feel like it fits better here.

Great job!

Ultimately both teams had very strong concepts, to the point that I think that if Team Rogue would have fully realized theirs just a little more they could have just as easily won the round. There was nothing in either of these projects that I disliked, and plenty that I loved. Team Phoenix just had a more complete version of their ideas this go around.

And with that Phoenix leads Rogue 2-1

Project 05

“born to be wild”

During the first season of What If, we visited Animal Kingdom to replace Pandora with a land based on characters from Marvel Comics.

This time around, we will once again be giving the park an overhaul. But this time, the approach will be the completely different.

Untitled.png

Teams, your task is to design a completely original land to replace Pandora. Your land should have at least one attraction that could be considered a “ride.” But perhaps most significantly; you cannot use any preexisting IP for this project!

This project is due Sunday, December 15th at 11:59pm Disneyland time.

I was thinking the same thing.

I hope they do, but Disney probably would have mentioned it in the announcement, to take the heat off themselves.

Team Rogue

Studio Mountain and Movie Score

Right away I appreciate that Team Rogue decided to give DHS a much needed water based attraction. The park is a concrete jungle by design, but the near complete lack of water throughout the park is jarring in contrast to the other three WDW parks.

The facade for Studio Mountain strikes me as a more animated variation of the building it is intended to replace. The hilly terrain present also gives DHS some much needed additional character. I should point out that I love the original concept of this park exactly as it was, but now that DHS has abandoned its Studio roots, some newer and different architectural and landscaping elements are welcome.

The ride feels like an updated, thrilling take on the Great Movie Ride. Unfortunately it also feels unfinished. There is a really fun concept here and I’d truly love to see it fully realized, as this team definitely have the right balance of creativity and humor to make something like this spectacular. I appreciate the effort and the fun concept art.

The Movie Score flat ride is well executed. One tiny detail I absolutely adore is having the queue wind its way through the “seating” section of the theater. This is smart for saving space and for adding to the atmosphere of the ride. And this would definitely help build anticipation for guests who are waiting to board. I also really appreciate the little Easter eggs for guests to notice. Those little attentions to detail make any attraction stand out. Overall this is a fun little ride that gives DHS much needed capacity and more for guests to do.

Thank you for your efforts!

Team Phoenix

Silly Symphony Sound Studios and Powerline Spin

Making this presentation a Scott Gustin Twitter thread is a hilariously on the nose choice and I love you for it. As one who has to do everything on her phone, reading it was a bit of a chore, but that’s a “me” problem.

Likewise, SSSS also adds something the park needs; another story-driven dark ride suitable for all guests. I really appreciate the backstory here. At one time DHS featured a heavy focus on Disney animation. As the park has evolved that presence has dwindled, so it’s nice to see that return here. It’s always fun when the audience becomes participants in the ride’s story, and the plot here lends itself perfectly to that. I also love that you included details pertaining to the various effects guests encounter on the ride.

Powerline Spin is a fun addition. A Goofy Movie has hardly any presence in the parks, which is surprising given the universally positive reception audiences seem to have for the film. I love that there are merch stands, I also just think they should be functional! That’s such a natural way to include more retail.

Thank you for your submission!

Team Phoenix.

Simply put, their concept was more complete. Had Team Rogue been able to fully realize their main attraction it would have been much closer. That said, brainstorming is looking very promising for both teams for project 05. I’m very excited to see how these projects turn out, especially given the no-IP restrictions.

Awwwww man!!!! You guys got me thinking of The Great Movie Ride again. I wish they would have just updated it rather than replace it. I think Runaway Railway and all the other Trackless rides are overrated. I never get fully transported because I can see the floor and in some cases the screens.

What a travesty! They must have gotten rid of it because of all the animatronics.

I've little doubt part of it was the upkeep, but I think the real culprit that killed the ride was the fact that at the time, Disney didn't own a lot of those movies, and as such, I would not be surprised to discover that the cost of the licensing for those properties was starting to outweigh the benefit they received from them. That was at a time when IPs were starting to become very valuable assets for studios, and I don't think Disney wanted to showcase nor pay for the IPs of other studios.
