What Happens to Items Left Behind in Rooms?

I have a question, and I could not find the answer with a search of the forums. On the way from the airport to the resort, my wife wants to get a small, cheap microwave for the room. There's no way we're going to bring it back to Chicago.

Here's the question: If we leave a microwave oven in the room when we go, what happens to it? Will it stay in the room for all subsequent guests of that room? Will it go into storage at the hotel? Will it go into a general lost-and-found?

It's fruitless to debate the convenience of having a microwave in the room if you plan to use it everyday. It's unquestionably more convenient than not having it. Think of it as a useful appliance, like a coffee pot or a refrigerator.

Anyway, my intention (hope) was to leave the microwave behind and have it be re-used, sold, donated, etc. I didn't want the hassle of having to haul it back home on the plane. And my kids are too young to make use of it.

However, it seems as though microwaves are *gasp* outlawed. Here's the response I received from Disney:
Microwaves are not available to rent since they are not allowed in the
rooms at your resort. There is one in the food court that you may use when you wish.
So much for that idea. Hotpot, here we come!

I wonder what caused such an anti-microwave reaction from Disney?

I'm sure somebody tried to microwave their Pal Mickey or something !

But, they have one for you to use in the food court. It just seems that since Disney is the king of Customer Service, that they wouldn't be so knee jerk about this.

I don't think they would rot in Disney hell if they brought a microwave, I think it's just ot state their policy.

OK...so I'm the one that brought up the hot pot idea, however, I must say that if Disney is willing to rent you a refrigerator for $10 per day for your room in a value resort, on your request, that they would already know about the combo fridges with a microwave on top that are offerred for rent for an entire year at every college and university I know of. In fact, we have stayed at several hotels that have had the fridge/microwave combo.

My children have both graduated from college...the last one in 2004...and we were offered the option of renting the fridge/microwave combo way back in 2001.

I'm thinking Disney may just be slightly behind the times. LOL

Enjoy your hot pot. Somewhere I still have the cookbook I bought when I was in college back in the 1970's on how you could cook an entire meal for you and your boyfriend using a hot pot and a popcorn popper.

Next to a microwave, it is one of the better inventions of modern times.

I think pace-makers have some funky effect from microwaves - and other medical products of similiar design.

Imagine if you couldn't go near a microwave and the person next door is warming up some oatmeal. It's suck to die over oatmeal.

At the other resorts that do have them, I bet people actually do avoid staying there because of them - that and the All Stars have the thinnest walls of all the resorts.

<TABLE cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=3><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD>Can microwave ovens affect cardiac pacemakers?</TD></TR><TR vAlign=top><TD>ANSWER:</TD><TD>As with other types of electronic products, microwave energy could cause undesirable currents to flow in the electric leads of a pacemaker. Implanted pacemaker dysfunction has been observed near electro-cautery and diathermy apparatus, radar and communication systems, walkie-talkie radios, auto ignition systems and even electric razors.

This is because devices such as these can generate electronic interference that can be intercepted by the tiny electronic circuits and wires of a pacemaker. If the pacemaker is exposed to sufficiently intense levels of microwave energy, unwanted currents can flow in its wires and circuits that may cause the pacemaker to dysfunction. While such problems are unlikely, it makes sense to warn pacemaker users whenever a microwave oven is in use. All patients with pacemakers should consult with their physicians for the final word on this matter.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

We use the microwave all the time. It's nice when you relaxing in your room after a LONG day of walking to make some hot butter popcorn.

I'm guessing that you don't go work out often. Just walk to the food court.

Only some of my dorms permit microwaves. They are the dorms that have gone through some refurbishment, and can now support the energy that microwaves use. The other dorms...well, can't.

If you're staying at a value resort, then maybe the buildings can't handle the amps.

Also, re: the pacemaker thing- what about DVC resorts? They have microwaves in their rooms.

NOTHING TO DO WITH MICROWAVES, but as far as disposal, we finished a trip w/the pac and play and the info line said just leave a note on it that it is trash and they will dispose.. i'm not sure if you are asking if something be donated.

That's why I'm not going to ask. :D
Good for you! I feel the same way.

All the circuits in the value resorts are 20 amps. They can handle up to 2,400 watts on any given circuit. For example, you could use a hair dryer that normally draws 1,800 amps on high heat.
