A friend of mine is planning on going to WDW in June and wanted to know what the Star Wars weekends were all about. I've never been, so can anyone elaborate?

People play dress-up and they have shows occasionally starring someone who was in one of the movies and they put on more demonstrations near the Star Tours attraction at DHS.

If you're into Star Wars, it's probably pretty cool. I'm not, so I ignored it all.

If you aren't into it, and you're just worried if it means it will be more crowded - no. It won't be any more crowded than another weekend during the busy season of summer. More locals are in attendance on the weekends, but Star Wars Weekends don't draw hoards of people, if that's what you're concerned with.

There's a special parade with Star Wars characters, people from the movies are there for autographs, Star Wars characters line up for autographs and pictures.

We went several years ago with my 3 yr old and he had a blast! It was cool with the characters, one part of the park had the Jedi's and good guys and then down another stretch were the Siths and the Emperor. Darth Vader was cool even for us, Darth Maul was a little scary.

There's also special merchandise that people line up for early in the morning, and they line up to get fastpasses for the autographs. The rest of the parks were fine, but we did find the HS was very crowded on the weekends.

If you like Star Wars definitely go (When we went, the Stormtroopers did a little performance above the entry gates...think Episode 4, stopping Luke and ObiWan near the cantina). If you're not into Star Wars avoid HS over the weekend, it's just too nuts.

Marcriss pretty much covered it but this link will give you more detailed information about the goings on at SWW.

A few notes. Get to DHS early....an hour prior to opening is not out of the question. There are 3 events at SWW that will become mob scenes quickly. They are Autographs, exclusive merchandise, and character meet and greets. If you want to do all three there is a good chance that you will need to attend at least 2 to 3 days to get it all in especially if you do not want to deal with crowds.

If you plan on getting exclusive merchandise do this on your first day. Pins will sell out quickly. Higher dollar, and larger production run items items tend to last a bit longer, but if you want the pins you will almost always need to be there on Friday. The merchandise store tends to clear out around noon or so if you just want to see what is there that is the time to go.

If you want autographs there is a good chance that you will need to get there extremely early depending on who is there. For example 2 years ago when Ray Park (Darth Maul) was there the line for autograph fast passes started to form at around 3:00 AM. I got there at 6:30 AM and had to settle for a stand by pass.

For the character meet and greets arrive around a half hour of more before opening head straight to the meet and greet sites and you can usually run the gauntlet in a few hours.

SWW are awsome! Just be aware that if there are any celebrities you want to see, be prepared to get to DHS early. Last summer, there were 2 celebrities (in the same weekend) that hadn't be at SWW in forever. People started lining up to see them around 4pm the previous afternoon!

As for the characters, lines for them will be long. The longest lines include Chewie, Anakin, Darth Vader, and last summer the line for the VIPs (Jedi Mickey, Leia Minnie, Vader Goofy, and Trooper Donald).

Have fun! I can't wait to go again this year. :)
