What happened on Dinosaur?

Alright, I just rode Dinosaur this weekend and was wondering what the heck is up with the first Carnotaurus encounter(the one after, "I'm tracking a big dino up on the scope, could be ours!") ? The Animatronic is gone, but you still hear the stomping and growling, but the only sign on the Carnotaurus is when you start accelerating forward, it's head slowly pops out of the bushes. Are they doing work with the animatronic? Please anyone in the know tell me that this is not a permanant change, because it was really lame. :brick:

As you probably know, from time to time the animatronics are removed and worked on. Often times this is either routine maintenance of the large figures or it is a result of them having continuous problems that are not fixable during the night shift. When they do this, the big figure is usually replaced with something, usually just extra raptors around the scene as a filler during the time of the rehab. In fact, many times they will cut the voice-over if a certain animatronic is missing so as not to confuse riders until it is put back into place.

I don't know the specifics of what you saw, but my guess is they are working on that figure and what you saw was a temporary replacement for the time being. Its also possible that the figure was not working properly and you witnessed a malfunctioning animatronic. Either way, it will probably be fixed in due time.

Thats what I thought, I just wanted to make sure it didn't get toned down even more than it did in 2000. It probobly is just a rehab, because the location that the head popped out was too low to be the actual animatronic. It was just weird hearing the same sounds that they use when the actual animatronic is there.

Each main animatronic goes down every two years or so for a rehab. The carnotaurus will be right where it always is - it may or may not be covered up, but the lighting sequence is altered so that it is hidden in darkness. They have a spare carnotaurus head that is complete from the neck up, but has no animation of any type. It may be mounted on a small hydraulic lift if they want it to pop out, but otherwise any movement is simulated by lighting. This head can be placed at different spots around the track to sit in for a regular animatronic.

How was it toned down in 2000?

I don't think it was toned down a lot, just little things, like the pterodactyl that no longer flies at the car. It's just the little things like that that I wish were still in the ride that were there prior to 2000 when the name change happened.

mbro2002, The pic in your avatar looks almost exactly like the one I saw on the ride.

EDIT: For some reason confused mbro2002's avatar with a supplied pic...

mbro2002, thanks for the pic, thats exactly what I saw.
To my knowledge, the pterodactyl never moved. It has always been a static display.

I could have sworn it used to move, but I could be wrong too, it has been a couple years.

I agree that it moved originally. If you look up you can see a small track on the celing.

I also think the entire sequence was calmed down a bit, and the show was brightened up just slightly in the change from CTX to Dinosaur. Otherwise, everything was very minor (except of course the big statute change in the front).

Interesting observations. Are you willing to expand upon your explanation and go into more details?

It did used to move. It was last in operation during the summer of 2001. It uses a cable-drive to move along the track and was put out of operation when the cable broke. The design caused the cable to fall directly on the track below and could have seriously injured someone had a vehicle been in the wrong position. The maintenance/ops managers then said that they would not put it back into operation until the drive mechanism was redesigned to ensure safety in the event of another failure.

There are several threads available on the CTX/Dinosaur changes on this site.

they should have kept the countdown to extinction theme. but when i had rode the ride the park had just opened.. and i noticed that a lot of the figures i saw in the ride looks a lot like pictures i had seen of toys for disneys new CGI movie dinosaur. I recall saying to my brother... i bet when that movie comes out they will change the name of this atraction.

walla.

i suppose that was their plan all along.

Me too!! I love that ride, but it still scares the hell out of me:eek: . I also always seem to get seated on the side with the carantaur. I have been on that about 20 times, and my hands still shake when I get off that ride.
