What ever happened to the "treehouse" resort?

Last night my husband mentioned something about a treehouse, and, as Disney is always on my mind, it triggered my memory of Disney's treehouse villas. Weren't they near Port Orleans or that vicinity? I had always wanted to stay there someday - what happened?

treehouse

When we were recently taking the boat from POR to Paradise Island, which goes past Treehouse, we asked about it. They are all boarded up and you can see them from the river. We were told they were going to be refurbished, but that no schedule had been set for it.

The treehouses are still there, but I don't believe they are in use. The entrance sign is still up, which leads me to believe that they have plans to open them again someday. I always wanted to stay in a treehouse villa!

If I remember correctly, I stayed in a treehouse villa in the early 70s on my first or second trip to the Magic Kingdom. 20+ years later, I stayed in the villas at the Disney Institute.

Now they are BOTH closed down?

I only stay in the BEST of places!

You would have liked the treehouses, maelstrom. Townhouse setup, looking out your upstairs treehouse bedroom view at the scenery, Disney style!

I played golf at LBV during August of this past year. That course runs right through the middle of those treehouse villas. At one point it started pouring, so while we were waiting out the storm, I grabbed my huge golf umbrella and head off to one of the villas. I walked up the front door, peeked in the windows, etc.

VERY creepy. None of the windows are baorded up or anything, all of the furniture and decorations remain untouched inside, the patio furniture and chairs are still on the deck, the bed was even unmade, looking as if someone had slept in it the night before. It looks as if they were all simultaniously abandoned within minutes.

I'm sure they're still sitting in that exact condition, unused and forgotten.

Meega, nala kwishta!
My wife told me of fond memories when she was a kid and her family stayed at WDW and stayed at that resort.

Maybe someday she'll be able to relive the experiance (if we can ever pull ourselves away from AKL  )

I always found the treehouses facinating. Back when Old Key West was just the Disney Vacation Club (this is probably 1995 or so), the bus system that DVC (or OKW) used also went to the treehouses. it was such a way cool idea, and it always felt like you were a million miles away from disney, in some kind of jungle. I hope they do referb them, I would love to stay there sometime.

They *DEMOLISHED* Disney Institute? I heard it closed down to become Saratoga Springs (thinking they were using the existing building structure, but modify the interior). My God! I need to drive around Disney grounds more often to see what exists and what doesn't?

What were the "Treehouse Villas?" I never heard of them!

Sounds like the people who last visited there experienced rapture or something... that is creepy, though!
