What do resort guests do during a hurricane?

I was just thinking about the hurricane and WDW. What do resort guests do? Is it feasible/safe to venture out and get food or even just goto the main building?

That is a great question. I was wondering the same thing as we will be there on September 18th...the highest hurricane activity period of the season. If one was out there in the Gulf, I would have to worry about my home here on the Ms Gulf Coast if it goes away from Florida and worry if it comes to Florida while I am there. I am getting stressed about it, but it is what I chose to have light crowds, I guess.

This is a good question--you think they have any events within the hotel for the guest.

A friend of mine was there on 9/11/01 and the cast members had everyone in the lobby playing games and stuff to pass the time.

Well i heard that ppl are just relaxing , going to the food court, and stuff like that..

Heard from Dave whos at All star sports that in the lobby right now characters are out. He just got done talking with Shaker....LOL guess disney is bringing the characters to the guest..

Very funny Stuart!

But I've actually been at WDW during a hurricane. We were staying in the WL and from the window in our room you could see the effects of it. I don't remember much, but I do know that the parks were closed so all we could do was stay in the hotel the whole day.

Seriously now, we were there during Hurricane Floyd (Sept 99) and WDW did a great job of keeping everyone informed. Floyd was expected to hit during the night, so beginning with the day before, our resort (All-Star Music) delivered written weather updates and instructions to our rooms 2-3 times. I remember one of the instructions was a curfew; no one was to go outside after 10:00 PM. Whatever.
We loaded up on breakfast items at the food court then sat outside our room and visited with other guests until midnight. We were lucky, because we were on the top floor. Some first floor guests were evacuated to the convention center at CS. Although glad that WDW was looking out for them, some folks I talked with said that no one came to get them until 11:00 AM the next day. They were not happy about that, but since none of the parks were open, it was just an inconvenience. AK opened at noon and we went and had a great day. Hardly anyone else there.

I remember reading somewhere that the last time (and wasn't it the first too?) that Disney closed the parks they put on activities in the hotels for guests, and things like they - I should imagine they'd do the same again.

Ohhh.... I just had a thought.... lots of guests, stuck in their rooms, nothing to do.... :drevil: Heh. Wonder if there will be a 'baby boom' next May?

From what I can recall, WDW has only been closed two other times - for Floyd in 1999 (first and only full-day closure) and after 9/11, when the parks were evacuated, essentially. I also recall characters being dispatched to the resorts on 9/11 to entertain guests.

Well this is a Cat4, something i'm not sure modern day Disney has ever experienced, and considering its headed inland from the Ft Myers/P Charlotte area towards Orlando, as opposed to staying up the coast and passing over St Pete, the folks staying in the Orlando area, regardless of on property or not, are in for a scary experience.

I'd be stocking up on non-perishables and parking our rental car in the middle of the lot, away from trees, if possible. The eye of the storm has 145mph winds, and about 30 miles outside the eye has around 80, right now as it passes Ft Myers.

I know what we'd be doing if we were stuck in our resort. :D

I don't remember what category it was, but back in '94 we experienced a Hurrican go through WDW on our stay there. We were at Dixie Landings (at the time) and the 'cane went through during the nighttime, so I pretty much slept through it. The next day, parks opened a few hours late, but other than that you would've never known that there was any kind of weather problem at all.

Im just trying to imagine the scene by the resort pools with the "Pool closed due to inclement weather" signs out. Slightly funny / surreal typething.
