Western River Expedition

The Western River Expedition is my favorite unbuilt ride concept. Is there a chance it will ever be built at our Magic Kingdom (behind Splash/Big Thunder) or at Disneyland? It sounds very similar to Splash Mountain, but nonetheless would have been a great ride if it was built.

I agree. Ever since I saw some of the concept art and heard some of the ideas, I'm starting to think I would have liked it more than POTC... but I will gladly take both.

This concept always reminded me of a Pirates/Splash combination attraction. I'd love to see it, but I honestly doubt it would ever be built. It would be fantastic to see a more "traditional" Magic Kingdom style attraction in Frontierland but at this stage of the game I just wouldn't hold my breath.

Yea, seems like they'd almost HAVE to have a movie tie-in with it somewhere. Disney/Pixar presents: The Western River Expedition. Starring the voices of Miley Cyrus, Clint Eastwood, Dolly Parton, Billy Ray Cyrus, and... Will Smith?

(Gotta love a "Wild, Wild West" reference...)

I completely agree with your statement. They do have room back there to accomplish this but I would doubt there will be anything new built for a long time at MK once the Fantasyland expansion is done. I would think it would be at least 10 years before something else is built.

When you guys say they have the room, are you talking about the pad north of BTMRR? Where the RR passes through? Never even thought about that spot, but there's A LOT of room there. Always thought Frontierland needed some more love, it's themed very well for essentially two rides and a walkthrough island.

As I would also like to see this come to the park, this is some of the excerts from "Celebrations" magazine issue 8, november/december 2009...

"When Walt Disney World opened, people complained. You see, for years, they had been hearing about this Pirates ride at Disneyland, and they were extremely disappointed that they could not find it at the Magic Kingdom. The complaints rolled in, and they piled in front of E. Cardon Walker, who became president of the company after Roy passed away. After awhile, Walker was sick of hearing it, and he did the only thing he thought would stop the complaints from coming in: He decided to build Pirates. (This pushed back constuction of the WRE) Then, another problem stuck a blow to the project. The Energy Crisis in the early 1970s wrecked havoc on WDW's attendance levels. It had been years since a Western film had made money at the box office, and the long running show Gunsmoke was ending its 20-year run on television. Execs also feared that the caricatures of Natve Americans would bring bad press to the company from the American Indiana Movement, which was quite popular at the time. When construction began on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, it was almost like a nail in the coffin of WRE."

Of course, this is a condensed version of the article, but you get the idea. It is still on the backburner....so never say never.

My biggest reason for thinking it'll never happen harkens back to the Eisner "synergy" days of the company. It appears that has been a major carry over with the new regime and because of I doubt you'll see any attractions that aren't tied to some sort of Disney franchise or property.

Would love to see a NEW quality attraction added to Fronteirland or Adventureland and not some crap ride like Alladin's carpet ride

Everything I've read says it was very similar to PotC in style and ride mechanics, plus it was supposed to be a huge combined structure with a mine cart ride - this eventually became BTMRR on its own. With those two rides in MK today, its a bit redundant to add WRE. While we might see a new Frontierland attraction in the future I doubt it would be WRE, or certainly not as it was originally envisioned. Today it would be seen as far to cheesy and probably racist. I would consider it dead in its original form.

Some good background reading can be found here:

Though there are some nice changes to Frontierland working their way up the approval ladder, WRE is not (and never will be) part of it.

Thanks for the clarification, Lee, as usual. Good to hear Frontierland is being looked at for improvements. Can you say whether it would be a rework of something already in existence or something brand new?

I believe that we received a 100mm plus ride not that long ago themed after a mountain in Asia and not a movie. Movies are recognizable though, so their product sells. It is an inevitability that rides will come from movies that are already big money makers. However, I would't assume that everything from here on out will solely be based on Movies, the imagineers aren't brain dead.

I was speaking primarily about Magic Kingdom but you're correct...EE wasn't tied to a movie. But I would venture to say 90% of every other addition, "improvement" or re-theming has revolved a film franchise.

Nemo x2
Toy Story
Stitch

I know imagineers aren't "brain dead"...I know they have stacks of ideas that would blow our collective minds...it's what the suits above them approve that keeps getting in the way.

Not likely because BTMR and SM are kind of the offspring of this project and with a western themed mine car rollercaoster and a log flume ride (although with a different theming than the Western River Expedition and Thunder Mesa) all ready existing it is highly unrealistic, that they will invest hundreds of millions for an attraction that has nearle the same rides to offer.

And that is shame. I don't like the idea of synergy one tiny bit. I guess it only sounds good to those who will fill up their pockets from slapping existing characters and franchises onto everything that is created for the parks.

As for WRE, I think building it now would be redundant since we already have the fantastic combo of BTMRR and SM.

Ohhh, what a tease!!!

Please elaborate.

Synergy is only good when it is organic, never when it is forced.

Actually I find Frontierland is working quite well, no big changes necessary as long as there are other troubled lands and areas in WDW (TL and AL in MK; entire WS in Epcot, entire DAK) that definitely need some additions or major refurbs. The only minor project I figure out for Frontierland is a major refurb of Tom Sawyers Island as this area is beginning to fall apart and is a little dated too.

I agree just inside the MK TL, FL and AL are in more need of help than Frontierland. Sure, some things could be improved, but I don't think they should be the priority right now.

I will be glad to see new projects coming to the land, though. :D
