The idea is that Disney has come to realize that there are lots of different sorts of Star Wars fans, so they’re deliberately finding niche sub-audiences within the broader audience and trying to tell stories that appeal to those sub-audiences.I've been a star wars fan since the very beginning. If I'm not the target audience then Disney got something incredibly wrong in their focus groups.
Point being, you may not be in the target sub-audience, despite the fact that you see yourself as a Star Wars fan.
You may not like or appreciate this approach, but when it works, it works. They can spend less to do a broader variety of things (taking some creative risks) without the pressure to appeal to a wide audience.
