I was considering taking my Christmas bonus and suprising the family with a February trip to WDW. I was really on the fence about it because I just didn't know about taking time off and if my kids would enjoy the cooler temperatures in Florida in February (compared to when we usually go - May or September). However, when I saw the news today that Splash Mountain would be down that sealed the deal for me!! My daughter would absolutely die if that ride was not open for our trip!! I guess we won't be visiting the world again until later!!

What ride referb would be enough for you to postpone your trip?

And like you are not twisting my words? The OP made it sound and plainly stated in their first post that the kid would "just die" if they couldn't ride Splash. So that to me sounds like "oh my kid wouldn't have ANY fun at WDW because of one ride". Oh please, you all are making me sick. To those of you that want to keep bringing my OPINION up about this bc God forbid this is a FORUM for OPINIONS if you agree or not. Then I don't want to see the threads coming up on here ever again with people complaining about grumpy and cranky BRATS in WDW. And people who can't parent. I do my job. Guess some of you are the ones you are complaining about. Funny, huh?

I'm pretty sure no one except you took the "just die" comment seriously as the end all be all thing that would make her trip unhappy. But if anyone's fav ride is closed during their trip I think it's reasonable to expect some disappointment.

And yet again, with your last sentences you brought in an argument that was irrelevant to the topic at hand. It's fine you disagree with me, I have no problems with that. It's the way you wrote your post that I have a problem with. I brought up the problems I saw with your flawed argument and instead of responding reasonably you responded with a bitter sounding rant because someone (not just me) found those flaws.

Well, looking at everything going on so far with this, here's my thoughts.

1. Who wouldn't enjoy cooler temperatures? Sure, some like it hot, but really, a day where you aren't burning up is always a good thing.

2. You just saw that Splash was going down.. It's down just about every year at the SAME time for refurb, whether it be a long or short one. So the fact that you entertained the thought of surprising them, you wound up flattering yourself that the ride was going to be down for what is basically "annual routine maintenance".

3. Your daughter would absolutely die if it wasn't open for the trip? Um, yeah, ok. If that would be the only time that you could go on the trip and the ride wasn't open, well, then no Disney for anyone for another year because of your daughter possibly being a smidge upset? Life doesn't always go the way you want. You play with the cards you're dealt. The ride is closed, but here, we're still going to be in Disney World. Still seems like a good deal to me. A bad day in Disney beats a good day anywhere else.

4. This is added on to #3, So let's say Splash was open for your trip, but something big happened that they had to close it down for some time (let's say that it would be down for well past the remainder of your trip) and you haven't gotten to ride it yet. Would you pack up and leave? Would you be that distraught that you would go to Town Hall and complain and demand that come He!! or Highwater that they better get the ride running for your daughter?

OP, please, you had a good idea with trying to get to the World in February. It's obviously not going to work out for you for the ONLY reason being of your daughters feelings getting hurt, which in itself is a pretty pathetic excuse not to go. As for would a ride being closed turn me away? Nope. In the times that I've been to Disney, I've wanted to ride Test track. Well, it wasn't done being built and it's been closed for refurb. Did that spoil my trip or make me move the dates? Nope, not at all. I went and discovered other attractions that weren't around for my other trips and I'll just hit up Test track when it's open NEXT TIME.

As I stated earlier:

A bad day at Disney beats a good day anywhere else!

Why is it ridiculous to cater to a kid?

As a former educator in our nation's public schools, I've seen parents cater to kids. The KIDS are the ones running the households. I've seen parents that have limited funds to survive and keep their families fed, clothed and sheltered, but because the parents cater to their kids, they go out and spend more than they make to make sure that their kids have the top of everything. When I say top of everything, I'm talking about middle schoolers who know that for Christmas they're getting the top new gaming system, the newest iPhones, etc. The tangible things that a kid doesn't necessarily need to have.

I've seen this "ridiculous" behavior by parents and then it carries over to other things. Once these kids get "spoiled" they then start to feel entitled to things. These kids then grow up and become the adults like some of the people who post on here. Life has ups and downs, unfortunately, this society we live in doesn't want their kids to see the downs. My kids will see the downs and I will be there to help them through it. Again, though, there are too many "soft" parents out there. The parents who put their kids in sports leagues that have "no losers" and that "everybody wins". Not every one wins, again, that's life. If everyone wins then I'd be a millionaire and not working myself to the bone to try and get by to the point where I can afford to go to WDW and be happy, regardless of what rides are running.

On a side note:

The OP had a thought of surprising her family. Had she worded her post in a different way as to say: I was thinking of surprising my family but just noticed Splash would be down, is this common because if it is, I haven't booked anything yet, so I'm glad I can avoid my daughter being upset. If the OP would've said that, the thread wouldn't have spun out of control.

Sorry. I want to make it clear that I just meant it's ok to cater to a kid in this specific instance. That's all. I think it's fine to switch a date to avoid when her favorite ride is closed. It's not like the kid even knows or was demanding it in this instance. I did not mean to indicate that I think parents should cater to kids all the time in the examples you listed. Not at all. I don't work as a teacher but I do work in health care, and believe, I've seen many a kid with that entitled attitude who have been spoiled up the ying-yang. I think it's fine to adjust dates as you can to make a trip that is right for you. Like I said, what is trivial to some is not trivial to others.

It's fine to adjust dates for some things. Splash is going to be down for this trip, who's to say that if the OP was to go, that her daughter might not fall in love with the new Little Mermaid ride and that becomes her new favorite. Splash might not even be missed!!!

But why not go later and get both? ;) Sorry, just teasing. I do understand your point. I'm just saying I see nothing wrong with adjusting for a ride. If it were a trip that was already booked...then no. One of my favs is Pirates and it was closed when I was there last. If I'd already had my trip booked, no, I wouldn't have changed it. But if I hadn't yet, ya never know, I might have considered changing it, especially because I was going with a friend who was most likely going on her once in a lifetime trip (We paid for her because her family couldn't).

This whole thread is just out of hand. Many of the posters that have replied have said that there is nothing that would stop them from going, ride closures or whatnot. For the minority on here that would change their plans around a ride being open, there are 4 parks and infinite amount of opportunities to do other things. It's a rather childish thing, but if it's that important to you, well, then when I'm in the park when it's cooler and lines are shorter and I have free dining and YOU aren't there taking up spaces in the lines, I'm fine with it! You can have longer lines, hotter days and pay for all your food!

When we were there in July of '07, both SE and HM were down for refurb. They are, by far and away, two of our all-time faves and we missed not bein' able to experience them, but, ultimately, we were at WDW, and that was all that really mattered. ;) :)

Overall concensus to this thread is as follows. Most people won't move a trip due to a ride refurb. Those that do, they have that right, just don't bring it here.

Can we have an admin close the thread already? This nonsense has gone on long enough.

One ride would not keep me home. There are so many other great rides that I would just catch that ride on the next trip. I do have to admit though that tonight when I saw it was going to be down again I panicked a little. It was down the last two times we went and Splash is a must do this trip! Thankfully, it is not down during our trip this time but I never once thought of canceling, I was planning my next trip time instead!!!
