WDW vs Dubailand

It says that the Al Ahli Group will invest $1 billion dollars for a theme park within Dubailand. First, they likely aren't the only investors and second, they are referring to the cost of one theme park not the entire complex.

"A $1 billion theme park that will open in Dubai come 2011."

That statement right there says that the entire theme park will cost around 1 billion dollars.

The entire setup of "DubaiLand" is somewhat confusing.

What will be their main focus? A theme park or the entertainment surrounding it?

Walt Disney World uses their four theme parks to pull in the tourists. A place like Las Vegas, which has some amusement parks along the "strip," uses the parks as more of a side-attraction rather than their main selling point.

So which route will "DubaiLand" take? WDW or Las Vegas?

Good questions - I wish I knew more about it. From what I have read, the true "Theme Park" is just one element, and from what I am reading they are also focusing a lot on sports and shopping. I am suspicious that there are other investors, too. What are the equivalent construction costs over there?

forgot to mention..I don't know much about Dubai, but as a woman, I don't know if I'd feel comfortable there. Any female boardies out there.....how were you treated when you went to Dubai?

I personally haven't been there, but know people who have. The photos they sent show the wife and daughter wearing tank tops, shorts, bikinis poolside, etc. (BTW, they both are/were dancers, so have the figures for it. ;) )

The backgrounds look gorgeous...think of the Morocco pavilion in Epcot, but more extensive. Lots of pools, fountains, planters, etc.

Now, I will admit that the women did NOT leave the resort/tourist areas, and will not move there (the husband has been offered beaucoup money to do so) but I believe a tourist will be very comfortable if she/he doesn't stray from the resort area.

I scanned the thread and I think that most people think Dubailand will have little effect on American tourism, but could have a direct impact on visitor numbers from the UK (and other places). I agree with these sentiments. However, I was a bit suprised to see that no one noted that it could have a positive effect on WDW in the long run. Let's suppose Dubailand causes a dip in the number of foreign visitors to WDW (let's say attendance dips 3-5%). Enough of a dip for management to notice, but not so big that revenue streams dry up. Couldn't we all be pleased with the results if a lot is done to lure the non-attending tourists back? Remember, competition is a good thing.
