WDW Trip Report 9/20 to 9/25

Well, the bad news is that we cut our trip short. However, the good news is that WDW was so low on visitors, we were able to do everything we wanted to do in half the time! Every attraction and every restaurant in every park was a walk-on! The Disney transportation system was (almost) flawless and Hurricane Isadore caused the weather to cool down with just a little bit of rain. It short, it was one of our best trips ever! Let me start at the start.

We arrived at the All-Star Movies resort about 4:05 PM on 9/20/2002. I had previously sent a fax with our room preferences on 9/16/2002 (Toy Story 9 or 10, non-smoking, second floor room near the ice machine). Upon check-in we got just the room we wanted and they didn't even charge us the extra amount for a preferred building. We also set up our room cards so that we could charge all our expenses. The CM at the desk told us that our limit on the room card would be $500.00 and that we would have to sign off on that amount before we could be extended another $500.00 worth of credit. I asked for a supervisor and requested that my credit limit be extended to $2,500.00. No problem, she extended the credit limit on the spot. We carried up our bags to the room and then headed to Epcot for dinner. As soon as we walked out to the bus stop, an Epcot bus pulled up and we all (wife, daughter and me) got seats on the bus. The bus driver was good and got us there in record time. We thanked the bus driver as we disembarked and headed for Guest Services to turn in out vouchers for AP's. No line was at the Guest Services window, so we got a CM to help us right away. At an adjacent window a group of guests had lost their tickets and we're attempting to get replacements. As the CM began to explain the steps that had to be taken to replace lost tickets, the guests in this group all became very rude and argumentative with the CM. About this time we had just finished up getting our AP's and I took out a pen and wrote down the number of each AP on a separate piece of paper. One of the leaders of the irate group attempted to enlist my help by stating to me, "I don't believe these stupid Disney people. They charge you a small fortune for a ticket and then they can't replace it when it gets lost!". I turned to him and replied, "Are you related to Forest Gump?". We then made our way to the entrance gate. Entrance was easy and quick. Security checks are not a problem at any of the parks, however, guests with a "hard luck" story abound. Over and over again I would hear such excuses as, "I didn't know about the hand stamp..." or "I washed it off...." or "We lost our tickets but...." or "I just need to find my mother..." or "I have to go to the bathroom...", etc. I had to tell more than one guest to please step aside and stop blocking the entrance. At our very first entrance to Epcot a young mother with a stroller was just in front of us as we went through the gate. Just on the other side of the gate, she stopped, turned her stroller sideways and began to rummage through a knapsack effectively blocking entrance to all others behind her. I gently nudged her and the stroller about three feet to the left.

My family and I walked back to the China Pavilion and had our dinner at the Nine Dragons Restaurant. It was wonderful as usual. One disappointment was that they no longer serve the Corn Egg Drop soup. They now have something called Sweet and Sour Hot Soup. It maybe good, but I didn't try it to find out. The rest of the meal was excellent! Also, we avoided the ToD parade with good timing.

Since we were very tired after our long trip we decided to head back to the room and get an early start the next day. To put us in the mood for sleep we rode "El Rio del Tiempo". We also rode SE and noticed the new safety message. After our experience with the young lady and her stroller blocking the entrance to Epcot, it was very evident to all of us why that safety message had to be installed on SE. We left SE and headed for the bus stop. At Epcot, all 3 of the All-Star Resorts board the buses at the same area (stop 10). When we got to the bus stop, there was a large line (about 60 people) in front of us. One of the new buses pulled up. You know, the kind that has the large doors in the front and the bus "kneels over" and extends a ramp out the back door for handicapped folks. Anyway, there was a very overweight lady on one of those electric scooters. The bus driver tilted the bus over, extended the ramp and the lady backed the scooter up the ramp onto the bus. She got off the scooter and sat down and her family (6 others persons) joined her on the bus. The driver then strapped the scooter in place. Then the driver attempted to retract the ramp, but it was stuck! I remember Tyler talking about this but this was the first time I had seen the problem. Without going into all the details, the bus driver and another CM spent the next 10 minutes trying to get the ramp to retract. Meanwhile the line was growing (240 in line by now) and it started to rain. The folks at the back of the line were not under the roof and were getting soaked! Within the next minute another bus shows up and we all figure that at least the first 40 or 50 people in line will be picked up. No! The bus stops and another CM gets off the bus and then the bus speeds away. The CM is a young lady with a burgundy shirt and a radio. Obviously a supervisor or manager of some sort. She calls some instructions on her radio and then attempts to correct the ramp problem. She pushes, pulls, jumps up and down on the ramp and plays with all the controls but the ramp still defies all mortal efforts. The crowd continues to grow and is up to 300 people by now. As buses go by for the other resorts (Coronado Springs, etc.) the All-Star crowd starts to yell for help. Within a few minutes the crowd has grown to 400 and I hear a few cuss words. Just then a new All-Star bus pulls up and folks "crush" to load up. Frankly, I didn't want to load up on that bus because it was "sardine city". Just before it became our turn to load up, another bus pulls up and we were directed to the new bus! We got seats! As we pulled out, I noticed at least 6 more buses in line to pick up the other All-Star passengers.

In short, we were delayed about 15 or 20 minutes tops! We got back to our nice room at the All-Star Movies resort and relaxed with beer, wine and cocktails. We also had some other friends and family members staying at other WDW resorts, so we called them and made arrangements to meet during the next few days. At this point we were still a little unsure of the visitation so we decided to visit the AK the next day. I put 3 dollars in my "For the Mousekeepers" envelope and put it on top of the TV and then went to bed. The AK will be the next installment.

You're complaining about waiting 15-20 minutes for a bus? What's the big deal?

400 people in line? I've never seen that many people waiting for a bus at one time at WDW, even at Downtown Disney or the TTC. Exaggerating a bit maybe?

Sounds like a great first night (cept for the little delay) We were at MK on the 20th. (we caught the monorail from Contemporary to MK after closing and got on the bus there) There were lines equal to what Talsonic described and 400 would be about right. Luckily, our line wasnt one of them :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound as if I was complaining about the slight bus delay. Actually I was very impressed with the speed with which the bus system overcame the problem. That is one of the things I really like about the bus system at WDW. When a bus does break down, they are able to dispatch a replacement almost immediately. Had a monorail broken down it would have taken much longer to correct the problem. As for the number of people, yes it was about 400. Two things accounted for the mass exodus. A lot of people leave Epcot just prior to the "IllumiNations" show in order to beat the rush. The show during our stay was at 9:00 PM. The other factor was the rain. It was one of the largest mass exits I have ever seen at Epcot. No exaggeration. Also part 2, Animal Kingdom will be posted later this evening.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

We woke up about 8:00 AM. Since we only had four towels for the three of us, we wrote a note on the "mousekeeper" gratuity envelope requesting 6 towels. We skipped breakfast and headed straight to the park. As we walked out to the bus stop a bus was currently loading up for the Animal Kingdom. We got on the bus and each of us got a seat. Within 5 minutes we arrived at AK. We walked passed security (no bags) and there were no lines at the ticket entrance. We just put our passes into the machine, stuck our fingers into the scanner and in a flash we were into the park. We headed for Kilimanjaro Safaris first. The standby line said 20 minutes however there was really no wait time at all. The animals were very active. The elephants were busy splashing one another at the water hole and the lions must have gotten the "kitty crazies" as they pounced on anything that moved. We then walked the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail and were surprised to see the gorillas playing "tag". We then did Rafiki's Planet Watch. My daughter enjoys petting the animals. I noticed that they still haven't updated the park map to show the correct route for the Wildlife Express Train. The map still shows the old half loop that the train track ran back and forth on before the entire track loop was finished a few years back (i.e. the train now runs on a full circle of track).

We headed down to the Rainforest Cafe for an early lunch with my wife's cousin Bill and his family. They were staying at the Coronado Springs resort and Bill was attending a convention. Bill had just been selected as the director of a large public water system in North Carolina. He has a lot of experience in water quality testing. During lunch I asked Bill about how water was tested to detect problems with poisons and/or pollution. Without going into all the details Bill told me how to collect, label and ship a questionable water sample. I put this information to good use but I'll follow up on this subject later in subsequent reports. Bill and his family headed off to Kilimanjaro Safaris while my family went to Discovery Island to see It's Tough to be a Bug. Again, the standby line said a 5 minute wait but we walked right into the theater and got seats right in the center about 2/3 back from the stage. Best seats in the house. I noticed about 6 mothers that had to take their young children out. I trust that the mothers learned something. The show was great as usual and fortunately WDW is still wise enough to keep the volume cranked up so that it covers up all the rude people that feel compelled to talk during the performance. Next stop, DinoLand USA.

We walked onto Dinosaur with no wait. I have been on this ride many times going back to when it was first called Countdown to Extinction. I have always ended up riding in one of the outside seats (i.e. far right or far left) but never in either of the "middle" seats. Well, for some reason I ended up in a middle seat and I grabbed the seatbelt to my left and buckled it into the receiver on my right (just as you would when driving a car). Right after I did this I realized that my wife who was to my left was without a belt. I attempted to unbuckle the belt but once you snap it into place, it's locked. Of course the CM checks to make sure everyone is properly belted. I sheepishly raised my hand and informed the CM that I had used the wrong belt. She went to the front of the vehicle and pushed a button under the wheel well and told me to release my belt. I released the belt, gave it to my wife and found "my" belt on the right side of my seat. Yes, I felt like an idiot. However, we had a wonderful time on the ride. We then went over to Primeval Whirl. To me, it looked like a fairly tame "Mad Mouse" and I wasn't too keen to give it a go. I decided I had to at least try it out and wow, I thought it was a very fun ride indeed! While we were spinning around I felt something on the floor hit the heel of my shoe a couple of times. After the ride was over I looked down at the floor and saw a wallet. I picked it up and did a quick inspection. It had about $300.00 cash, several credit cards and a California driver's license. I started to walk over to a CM to turn the wallet into lost and found when I saw this fellow over by the water fountain at the ride exit that seemed to match the picture on the DL. By the time I snaked my way through the exit ramp switchback, the man was walking with his girlfriend (?) over toward Tarzan Rocks. I caught up to him and asked him if he had lost his wallet. He reached toward his left rear pocket and then realized his wallet was gone. Just to be sure, I asked him for his name and birth date. He answered both correctly so I returned his wallet. I also asked him to look through its contents to make sure nothing was missing. Everything was intact.

We then walked through the Discovery Island Trails. Lots of wildlife to see plus you get to see many of the carvings on The Tree of Life. We then caught the Flights of Wonder show. Those birds are very impressive. Every time I walk out of that show I always expect to see that wagon where you can make your own CD. On previous trips I made CD's with all of the Haunted Mansion cuts, American Adventure and other music as well. Sadly, WDW has seen fit to get rid of these mini recording studios. Well, it was now time to move along.

We walked through the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Sad to report that WDW has put wire mesh up between the 2x4's in the giant fruit bat viewing area. The 2x4's used to be open (12 inch on center) and the bats couldn't fly out such a small opening. It was nice to have a clear and unobstructed view of these creatures. However, escapes by the bats was not the problem. They had to put up the wire mesh to keep the guests from throwing litter and food into the bat area! What a shame. The tigers put on quite a show. One Tiger had a bone (cow femur I think) and was chewing on it in the water. Another Tiger was trying to "steal" the bone. They were playing a very serious cat and mouse game. Very entertaining.

We decided to head back to the room but we had one more thing to accomplish. Kali River Rapid's was our next stop. We all had our $0.25 ponchos (purchased earlier in the year at Big Lots) but we decided not to use them because "wet" is really part of this ride. Again, no wait time. We walked right on the ride. However, a couple of women in front of us with 3 children (about 6 or 7 years of age) were walking just in front of us. None of them were wearing shoes. We followed them up the long queue and just as the CM asked them "How many?", he noticed that none of them had shoes and he refused to let them board. One woman said, "Well we never wear shoes in the boats!". The CM responded, "When you board the rafts and leave the rafts, you must have shoes on. If you take your shoes off in the raft, that's your business.". Anyhow, we loaded into a raft and spoke with a very nice British couple and their son. This was their first time and they were a little nervous. I told them everything would be fine but if they wanted to keep their feet and shoes dry, just make sure to put your feet on the rail rather than the floor. Well, we all got soaked (except for our feet and shoes) and had a wonderful time. We headed for the exit, caught the bus (no wait) and went back to our room.

That small gratuity ($3.00) for the "mousekeeper" sure paid off! We got 10 towels, 6 Mickey soaps and they brought us a coffee maker! I don't drink coffee but my wife drinks that chocolate coffee stuff. The "mousekeeper" must have seen my wife's little tin of coffee and decided to help out. Great service! I increased the gratuity the next day. We relaxed a little and watched the weather channel to check on Hurricane Isidore. I was just praying that Maria was ok. We decided to go back to Epcot for dinner.

Caught the bus to Epcot and had long dinner at the Bistro de Paris. Very good. We visited several of the gift shops around the World Showcase and then headed to Imagination. Boy oh boy! The years have not been kind to Eric Idle. He looked very old! The poor boy is only 60 yet he looked much older to me. I hope he is not ill. Figment looked pretty good except he seems to be suffering from some gastrointestinal problems. We had our picture taken in the Kodak lab and then decided to go back to our room just in case another bus decided to break. However, no such problem this time. We got to the bus stop and we were 3 of 9 people total on the bus. We all were staying at All-Star Movies so the driver took us directly home. So, we watched a little more TV and ate some popcorn before we hit the sack secure in the knowledge that visitation was way down and that standing "on line" (as those folks from New York and New Jersey say) would not be a problem!

Thanks for the detailed report! Nice to hear about the little things, like finding and returning the wallet and the "mousekeepers". Those little things are what really make Disney a wonderful experience.

I hate to hear that they had to fence in the bats. I always like having the clear view. It felt so much more exciting to be literally face to face with them, unlike a caged in zoo atmosphere. Why do people have to ruin things like that for the rest of us:mad:

44 days until check in:sohappy:

The Magic Kingdom on Sunday, 9/22/2002

I usually don't go to The Magic Kingdom on weekends because the crowds always seem to be larger due to local attendance. However, with the threat of heavy rain as a result of Hurricane Isidore the locals seemed to stay home. So, Sunday morning we shot off to MK. When going to MK from any of the All-Stars each resort gets its own bus, therefore, you go directly from Movies to MK without any stops at Sports or Music. We got there about 9:30 AM and made our way through the entrance without even having to stand in line. Our method for visiting the parks is rather direct. We pick several attractions to visit and then we go to each in turn. If one attraction is held up by a long line, temporary malfunction or long recycle time we always have a backup plan to make the most of our time. We boarded the WDW RailRoad at Main Street USA and rode the entire loop. The ride was fun but it was also useful as a "scouting" mission. It was obvious that visitation to MK was very low. We got off at Frontierland and headed straight for BTMRR. No wait time and we got seats all the way at the rear and we got to wave at some of the folks on the riverboat and the train! We made our way over to SM and while the wait time said 20 minutes, the wait time was really 0. We got right in the front and we had a brand new log. The entire log was bright and shiny and water beaded up on all its surface. The hand rails and the "crash pads" had no algae on them at all. We got a little splash of water at the bottom of the big drop but not very much. I always enjoy seeing our picture at the end of the ride. It's always the same; my daughter has her hands up and a big smile on her face while I have a death grip on hand rail with my eyes closed! We made it a point to miss CBJ, TSI and FSA.

We next went over to the HM. When I saw the standby time it said 15 minutes. I thought that was strange because normally when they have no wait the standby time reads "13" minutes. I was afraid that we might go in too quickly and not get the chance to see the Leota tombstone but we did get the opportunity to see the device. Very good. I noticed several of the recent rehab. upgrades and was pleased. The soundtrack for the dueling portraits was not working. I clearly saw the 4 new photo op cameras and I later inquired about all the details. I got the most recent news on the photo op but I'll wait for a later date to spill that information. Also, I noticed that during some of the rehab. work some leaks developed in the roof. With all the water the HM experienced during the passing of Hurricane Isidore, I noticed that a crew from Buena Vista Contracting was working on Sunday to find and patch the leaks. That is why (I was told) the scaffolding was still up in front of the Atrium.

Over to PoC. The attraction was very fun as always but near the end we saw something different. Just before you go through the arch (with the drunken pirate) and into the jail section, there is a small balcony (unlighted) to the left. I noticed 2 CM's in costume standing there. One older female CM had a small flashlight and quickly "flashed" it (about 4 times) at several passengers in our boat (as if she was looking for someone). A young male CM was standing next to her and appeared to have a prop flintlock rifle. As we disembarked the boat, we saw the same 2 CM's come out of a CM door and the female CM gave the small flashlight to the CM that was working the ride exit. Then the 2 CM's we saw in the ride left through another CM door. I suppose this was part of some orientation for a new PoC CM? Very interesting. We were ready for lunch and it was now time to activate my secret plan.

My wife and daughter walked over to El Pirata Y el Perico Restaurante and ordered their food. In the meantime, I dodged through the dark passageways to the connecting Pecos Bill Cafe and carefully made my way across the street to "The Turkey Leg Cart". I bought a turkey leg and then reached into my back pocket and retrieved a small Donald Duck bag. I quickly concealed the turkey leg in the bag and quickly returned to my wife and daughter who were just now getting their tray of food. We went to the condiments counter and stocked up on napkins and then I led our merry group to a table in the dark recesses of Pecos Bill Cafe. Only my wife and daughter saw me eat the forbidden leg! With my "caveman" instincts satiated, we continued our quest.

We did the Tiki Room next. I like the "Under New Management" show although I do get a little misty every time I hear poor old Phil Hartman's voice. At the end of the show I always stand up when the birds ask me to (i.e. "...get on your feet.."). This time some guy behind me yelled, "Down in front, the show's not over yet you (swear word deleted)!". I did not respond because IMHO it is impolite to talk during a show (unless audience participation is invited). As we walked outside I expected that the rude person might offer an apology. Nope. He walked out quickly with his family members and just kept on walking. Just another example of why WDW has to have all the special safety spiels. Some visitors are just plain stupid. My daughter got a little upset by this man's behavior so I just took a little time to explain to her that not all people are nice. Although I dislike the ride, we did The Magic Carpets of Aladdin because both my wife and daughter like the thing. Pretty generous of me don't you think? We avoided SFT and JC. It's now time for Fantasyland!

On our way, the riverboat in Liberty Square was just about to leave so we jumped on for the trip. The engine on that boat always fascinates me and I enjoy watching it work. Sure, I know the ride is slow and always the same but we enjoy it every time. Also, I enjoy watching the variety of birds. Speaking of birds, please let me digress for a moment. The bird population is way down at WDW right now. The big black vultures are gone from AK, most of the little sparrows are gone and the pigeon population is way down too. Don't know the reason. Just an observation.

At Peter Pan's Flight the standby time said 20 minutes. From the time we first stood in line to the time we first sat on the ride was 8 minutes! No wait at IASW or SWSA. We avoided Dumbo, MAWP, CGC, MTP and MTF. To finish out the day we went to Tomorrowland.

While Tomorrowland should more properly be called, "Yesterdayland" there are a few attractions we do enjoy. Did both SM and TTA. Then it was time for our favorite Alien Encounter. I enjoy this attraction. The only part I dislike is watching the poor children come out with tears streaming from their eyes. Naturally we avoided BLSRS, TIS and AO.

So, before we say goodbye to MK we stroll down Main Street USA and visit several of the gift shops. What's that you say? Oh yes, you're right. The Magic Shop is gone, the Penny Arcade is gone and so is the Main Street Cinema. But, it does have gift shops. We also stopped by the car barn and talked with a few CM's. Nice people!

Caught the bus back to our resort (no wait) with a total of 7 people on the bus. Walked into the room and wham the "mousekeeper" had really gone out of her way! She made little Mickey's and elephants and a Donald out of the towels. IMHO she belongs in the art department. We again watched the weather channel to keep track of Isidore. We decided to go to DTD for dinner and some shopping but I'm going to skip that event right now because I think it will fit better in my closing comments. I'll just say this much, Cirque du Soleil and some other DTD locations are clearly having some difficult financial problems.

AMAZING trip report Talsonic. You are really great on all the little details that make a trip to WDW so special. I am a little confused. I got most of the attractions you were reffering to by initials but I just couldnt figure out MTF in Fantasyland. I must be just missing it!! LOL If you wouldnt mind sharing what it is Id appreciate it!! Please do continue on with your trip report though!! Belle

LOL... those ramps can be a real pain in the posterior somedays. I'm willing to bet that person was Asa... she's one of the Epcot managers. She's real nice. :)

At any rate... seeing as it was the exit, Im real shocked that they didnt get those replacement busses to you sooner... by 9:00, they usually have 20 or so staged... *shrug*

But oh well, glad to see you otherwise had a good vacation, transportation wise. Too bad I couldn't have been your driver! I go back to work tomorrow. :)

You're right Belle. It was really incorrect for me to have lumped Mickey's Toontown Fair (MTF) in with Fantasyland because MTF is really a "land" unto itself.

Tal, you would have cracked up if you could have seen me looking furiously in my Birnbaum's Guide to Disney trying to track down all the initials!!! I would never have gotten that especially at 8 am which is when I was trying to puzzle them all out!! Belle

Disney-MGM Studios, Monday Sept. 23, 2002

After having witnessed the low attendance at MK on Sunday, we knew that the Studios would be easy as pie. We took the bus at 9:50 from AS Movies and got to the Studios by 9:58 and we were through security and the entrance gates by 10:06. We walked directly to the GMR and only had a slight wait to board (5 minutes). Speaking of boarding times for attractions, please allow me to digress again. All the attractions in all the parks were running at their lowest capacity in that there were no double queue lines and the various "vehicles" were never full. On the GMR they were only running one vehicle at a time through the attraction rather than the normal two. We got a "lady" gangster that "stole" our ride vehicle. We were seated in the second row and I was on the far left, just behind the driver position. When the gangster took over the ride I noticed that her prop pistol was a Smith & Wesson Model 67, Stainless Steel, 38 Special with Pachmayr Grips. The firing pin had been removed. This type of pistol did not exist in the 1920's or 30's. I own a couple of these weapons. Anyway, the ride was very fun. As we got off the ride and headed for the exit doors (daughter first, wife second and me at the rear) a man (CM) said to my daughter, "You should have a big smile on your face after that ride and if you don't start smiling soon your Mom may have to give you a big "dope slap" on the back of your head.". Mom and I were a little dumb struck with the remark, so we just kept moving. We weren't offended but we're still a little puzzled about why he said such a thing. Oh well, we had places to go and things to do.

We caught Voyage of The Little Mermaid at just the right time after our exit from the GMR. We went directly into the theater and missed the preshow wait. Again, another really great show! The rain, the green lasers, the bubbles, the audio and all the other tremendous special effects they use make this a show not to be missed. Plus you don't have to wear special 3-D glasses! Saw at least 8 parents leave the exit during the show with little screaming babies. We sat next to some folks from Mexico and I only had to say "silencio por favor" twice before they stopped screaming, "Mira, mira"! Last time we visited this show, we noticed that the show times had about an hour gap around noon. I assumed this was so the cast could take a well deserved lunch break. After all a lot of athleticism goes into making all of those characters "come to life" on the stage. I noticed this time that the shows started at 10:00 AM and ran until 6:30 PM and each show seemed to start on the hour or half hour. By my calculations that's 18 shows a day! Those are some hard working CM's!

Next we saw one of my favorites, Walt Disney: One Man's Dream. I don't want to spoil any of this for those who have yet to see this attraction. Let me just say this. Many of the items in this exhibit should be donated to the Smithsonian before they are lost. As Walt himself said many times, he never wanted his parks or his company to become a museum. The Disney Company does not have the professional curators that are required to preserve and protect these items for future generations. One Man's Dream is not to be missed. Anyway right next door is show to be missed, "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire...".

Decided to eat lunch so we had just a small walk over to "The Hollywood Brown Derby". No wait. Great salads! However, something usual happened. They gave us preferred seating tickets for "Fantasmic" for that evening! Of course, the first thought that hit my mind was they must be desperate for an audience if they are handing these out at lunch. Then it crossed my mind that with all the rain from Hurricane Isidore, these passes are probably going to be useless because the show will be cancelled. Then I thought, heck, we have seen Fantasmic on 4 other occasions and we never once got preferred seating before (to the far right of the theater) nor have we ever had to wait for a good seat (center 2/3 of the way back). So, I was about to return the passes when my wife kicked me and said, "come along dear" with passes still in hand. When we got outside I said, "We have no use for these passes, let me give them back". She reminded me that we had other friends staying in other Disney Resorts that had not yet seen Fantasmic. So, we called their rooms from a pay phone (free call and besides we NEVER use our cell phones at WDW). We decided to hide the passes in the park in a secure and convenient location and told our friends where to find the passes if they wanted to see the show. I'll tell you later in the report about the result.

We then walked down Sunset Blvd. for ToT and RRC. Having just eaten lunch, I passed on both attractions but my wife and daughter had great fun. I went over to the Disney Vacation Club booth and exercised my mathematic skills with the salesman. He retreated in short order when I brought up the topic of current resale prices and point rentals. My wife and child had that, "Did you pick on another salesman?" look in their eyes as they caught up with me at the DVC "empty" booth. I said, "You got to feel your stomachs in your throats and so did a salesman!". We headed for the Backlot Tour and my wife only pinched my ear for half of the walk!

Domestic violence alert! As I am sure some of you may have noticed, my wife has a tendency to kick, pinch, punch and push me every so often. Let me assure you that these are nothing more than "love taps" on her part. We have been married for over thirty years now and I seldom actually get hurt form these attacks nor do I ever retaliate. It is just a part of our normal communication. Please, do not be alarmed or take this behavior out of context. Thank you.

The Disney-MGM Backlot Tour was crowded but still a walk-on. Since there were only 3 in our party a single rider was put with us in the vehicle. He was seated all the way to the right. My daughter was seated all the way to the left (in hope that she would get wet). The single rider appeared to be an Indian (from India). He was very "jerky" in his movements and tended to stare at my family and I for rather lengthy periods with an odd smile on his face. He looked at my wife and said an expletive (which I will not repeat here). We spoke with him a little more and it became obvious that he suffered from turrets syndrome. We got him to hush on the ride so that we and others could enjoy it. After the ride (since the AFI lounge was closed) we spoke with the young man a little more and he seemed to be a very nice fellow. He did slip into a few outbursts of rather vile cuss words but we understood his affliction and ignored those remarks. We exchanged email addresses. Based upon a few emails I have received from him, he seems to be a very smart guy and a computer wiz kid! I think we have a nice friend!

We next did the Hunchback show. We did B&TB last time so HBoND was on our schedule. The show has suffered over the years from neglect. The confetti cannons broke down years ago, the festival of fools cast no longer enters the theater from the back (thanks to all the children that don't remain in their seats and the parents who don't properly restrain them) and the CM ushers allow too many people into the theater after the show has started! Aside from these problems, the show is still great, but now gone forever. I was pleased to see it again and I thought the cast was top notch! Let's hope that Disney doesn't get control of the Muppets because if they do, then this stage will no doubt become "Miss Piggy's Playhouse". Arggh.

Now, it was of course time to see Muppet*Vision 3-D. What a brilliant show! The preshow is even great! I love it when "Mickey" comes out in the preshow ("rat, shmat.."). Opps. Don't want to give anything away for those who haven't yet seen it. Boy, if Jim Henson hadn't died there is no tellin' what could have happened. Anyone remember Jim back in Washington, D.C. back in the 1950's and the Wilkin's Coffee commercials? Anyway, Brian Henson just doesn't sound like Kermit and the real creative talent is gone now from the Muppet franchise. RIP Jim.

Well, we decided to skip all the other junk and gave a very wide berth to the barker at "ABC Come Waste Time with Me" (or whatever they call it). We then checked out some of the gift shops. Now pardon me for this advice but I feel compelled to help you. We often look at the various gift shops in the parks. Sometimes (rarely) they have exclusive items that you just can't get anywhere else. More often we just look and make mental notes or jot down on our PDA those items we wish to buy. Then we go to DTD and search for the same items. Nine times out of ten, we are able to find the same items at DTD and get a discount to boot! So, the moral of the story is, don't buy stuff in the parks if you can go elsewhere and find the same item. We left the park and got another quick bus back to the resort. Gotta love that bus system at WDW!

When we hit the room we found a BIG MICKEY on our daughter's bed! It was really cool and my daughter really liked it very much. We kinda knew (and confirmed later) that the "mousekeepers" had left if for her but I'll tell you more about that story in the conclusion. Right now we had to concern ourselves with our phone messages. Let me warn you that this gets a little convoluted so take your time. The first phone message was from friends (actually my other daughter and son-in-law) who were staying at the Poly. They wanted to see "Fantasmic" so they decided to pick up our "hidden" tickets. They in turn had left us "hidden" tickets for "Cirque du Soleil" for the upcoming Thursday performance (however we hadn't told them yet we were looking at Wednesday as a departure date because something else had happened and besides I don't really like "La Nouba"). Then the next message came from my wife's cousin Bill (I told you this was convoluted) and he wanted to see "Cirque du Soleil" on Thursday. He was willing to trade three passes to The Haunted Mansion Dinner at MK on Tuesday! Now here is the kicker! All of these tickets, passes, etc. were all complimentary! So, we made all the deals and switches and everyone was happy. Well, with that under my belt (and a few beers) we decided to hit DTD.

Had dinner at Fulton's Crab House and then decided to do some serious shopping. Had to go by Once Upon a Toy and buy some exclusive die cast cars for a friend back home. She collects and sells them. I was surprised to learn that OUaT does not give a Disney Club discount. Also the new pin shop right across the way does not give a Disney Club discount either. Spent only a few dollars in either establishment as a result. However we bought a bunch of stuff (hats, clothes, CD's, DVD's, CD-ROM's) and other stuff at World of Disney. Then hit Disney at Home and The Art of Disney and came close to exhausting my credit limit. But we got some good deals with the Disney Club discount. Two of the pieces of art I bought will (on resale) finance our next trip to WDW with funds to spare! Also we had all that stuff we bought shipped to our home. I dislike carrying things in the parks. Tomorrow is our "free day".
