WDW Resort rookie!

Hi all! I've been to WDW 7 times now but for my 8th trip I am finally going to be staying on-site. My fiancee and I are booked at POR-FQ and we're super excited (this will be her 3rd trip). Any advice for a rookie? Things we should know? Any tips or tricks?

Also, I will be renting a car and didn't know if guests staying at a resort still had to pay for parking at the parks. Any idea?

Thanks everyone!

On-site resort guests don't pay for parking at the theme parks or resorts. When you check in, they'll give you a parking pass to keep in your front window.
Definitely take an afternoon to explore the two Port Orleans resorts. They are beautiful!

POFQ is going to spoil you! Honestly, I wouldn't want to stay at another resort. Take time to wander about. The boat to DTD is fun. Oh, and there are carriage rides, and surrey bikes! The path between the Riverside and FQ is great...OK, now I'm getting home sick!:brick:

You don't pay extra for parking. But, I think the bus system at POFQ works pretty great, so you might want to give it a try. We love not having to drive anywhere for a week.

The entire resort is pretty small, but don't let them put you next to the parking lot if you can help it.

We need time for things to happen.
1 word: beignets!

Wonderful little sweet powder covered pillows of love. :dazzle:

It's a great resort, one of my favorites. Enjoy!

Magic.

Like other folks have said,POFQ and RS are lovely resorts.we have stayed once at French and this year will be our third at riverside. Not much more to say as you've already been told parking is free, the boats to downtown are great,th beignets are awesome, both pools are great theme wise, food courts are excellent but RS has more options,my opinion, but it's like one big resort split into two,and walking along the sassagoula river is a great way to explore the area.enjoy.

POFQ is a great choice for a couple, my DW and I stayed there on our first WDW trip together. One suggestion is to make a reservation at one of the Downtown Disney restaurants and take the boat from POFQ. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time. The boat ride is fun but long.

Oh man! My favorite resort. I just booked into POP. But I have stayed at FQ several times and love it. Wish I had the money to stay there all the time, but I can't justify it with my current income when all I need is a place to sleep.

I love the music, the theme. Sometimes I just love walking around the resort. Maybe I will upgrade!!!!!!

You will love it.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm definitely looking forward to this. We will try to explore the grounds and really take it all in.

One other quick question. When do the DDP credits "expire"? We aren't leaving until late on the day we check out and would love to get a meal in the World then but I'm not sure if our credits expire when we checkout or the last night or what.

Sadly they expire at midnight the day that you check out. It is a use it or lose it kind of deal.

Ok, so if my last night is Sunday night, and I check out Monday morning, I could still use my credits Monday afternoon? Or are you saying they expire Monday morning at midnight?

You can use your credits the day that you check out. However, we encountered a quirk with this our last stay. We tried to use our counter service at Pecos using the self serve computers and they wouldn't take our KTTW. We had to go to the "live" CM line. Don't know if that is the same with other self serve restaurants.

I finally stayed on-site last May and it was totally worth it. Just having the freedom of going back and relaxing for a few hours at your resort is a win win. I remember the old days of not staying on site. It's a longggg day not to mention you miss out on extra magic hours. I'm on the monorail for my upcoming trip at GF so I'm really spoiling myself.

Another great perk is the dining plan. You don't need to take anything else with you except your KTTW & your ID if you plan to drink. I've heard good things about FQ and POR so I'll probably drop by and check it out.
