WDW hires 2000 cast members

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Walt Disney World announced Thursday it is hiring 2,000 workers for summer jobs, another sign the tourism industry is recovering.
Universal Orlando also is hiring 2,000 workers for its two theme parks and entertainment arena, spokesman Michael McLane said.
Disney World brought on a similar number of employees last summer, but at the same time reduced the hours for its maintenance staff due to concerns over the economy and the war in Iraq.
This year, no cutbacks are planned, said Rena Langley, spokeswoman for the theme park resort.
"We've seen a steady recovery over the past few years," Langley said. "And we're encouraged by trends in bookings."
The hiring will primarily be for jobs involving customer interaction such as merchandising, concessions and housekeeping.
With about 54,000 full-time and part-time jobs, Walt Disney World is central Florida's largest employer.

And are these 2,000 that will be laid off? If so, I can't see their quality in showmanship being too Disneyesque - especially with current training.
Hiring/layoff, hiring/layoff. Disney's a company that relies on consistency so as to please Cast Members and work ethic -- remember all the posts about "lousy CMs?" It's for this very reason. It's turned into a lousy system, don't you think?

They are SEASONAL positions. Their contract will only run for the summer, hence they will not be laid off their contracts will end.

Every decent hotel in the area is running at about 80%+ capacity, the theme parks are busier than I've seen them in years (I mean consistently busy... no comparison to 7/4 or anything like that), and I can't get a decent rental car to go to Miami next month...

Seasonal CM's have happened since day one. Stop acting like it's something new. My uncle was a seasonal CM back in the 70's while he was going to high school. You get a summer contract and you're done.
In other news, the CBJ will NOT be affected by this... so you can sit in there all summer.

How long is Traditions these days?

If I recall correctly, they used to be 16 hours - two days. One very recent report said 8:00 - 12:00 (4 hours - one morning).
Sadly, it really shows.
