Walt Disney World Airport

Correct me if I'm wrong...but i think i remember reading somewhere that airplanes aren't allowed to fly over Disney World because it takes away from the "experience". I don't know if this was just true when Walt was alive, or if it still holds true today...but if they had an airport in WDW then there would be airplanes flying overhead numerous times a day, you don't want that ruining your vacation now would you?

Degunter.. I just spent the last half hour reading this link to that article. This j thaddaus weasle is just that a weasle. He is trying to put some spin on disney and lend credibility to himself.

While the elements do have a basis in fact, these oppertunities died with Walt. These concepts where part of the original Disney World( not the Walt Disney World that Roy compleated to honor his Brother) that included the original E.P.C.O.T concept plan.

The agreement for Reedy Creek was lobbied by walt and approved before one tree was feld and one shovel of earth was moved. Walt didn't realize he was dieing at the time and thought he would be aroun for at least fifteen more years to compleat the whole project into 1986.

Yes there is the authotity to build an airport, But what Weasel has failed to mention was that the urban and suburban utopia that he wanted to build would usually have its own airport like any big city and in 1966 when when disney wanted to get started building E.P.C.O.T. it was to be larger that the the entire ciity of Orlando was in 1966 and the original orlando airport called McCord had less than 10 gates and was never going to handel the large crouds that Walt expected not like the new behemoth there at Orlando International.

This will never happen today especially with the flight path of Orlando International over that spot and Disney would not spend 20 Billion to build an airport if they are unwilling to spend one Billion to upgrade the monorail. And when he mentions a monorail to the airport he is refering to another rumor related to the expansion of the Monorail. line that I heard a rumor of expansion to include the new Orlando International back in 90 and you see where thats been.

EDIT TO ORIGINAL POST:

I just rerear this article and he does have a way of streaching things a bit. For one thing he states that

"There are even subtler signs the Disney may have an airport in its future. The new on-property maps that Disney Travel sends to resort guests who have booked WDW vacations makes no mention of Universal or Sea World. But it does go out of its way to depict Orlando International Airport as a teeny tiny place somewhere far off on the horizon. Below that image is this description "Orlando Airport -- 20 miles away." That doesn't make the place look or sound terribly convenient to WDW guests, now does it?"

Why would Walt Disney World maps mention other compeating attractions?

Why wouldn't you give a relation to the airport so guests would get an idea of where Disney property is in relationship to the airport?

He also mentions all the transportation rumors as going to happen and are happing because there will build theariport.

I would like to know his source on this statment:

"Sound like a dream? Well, some former Disney Development executives --now WDI VPs -- are quite anxious for this dream to come true. They're doing financial feasibility studies and having quiet conversations with major airline executives -- feeling out who'd be willing to pay what to be the exclusive carrier for WDW's airport."

He also goes on to clam that this new airport idea will be built just west of MK on newly accuried property. I thinks that reserved for wildlife or a new resort.

I emailed this guy lets see what happenes

Nope, it's not closed airspace, just be 1,000 feet over the highest building.

You have some errors in this statement

1 Commercial air service was moved to McCoy in in 1962 form the old Herdon airport now called Orlando Execitive Airport

2 Wasn't renamed untill 1976

3 the first new (North) terminal was started in 1978 and opened for service in 1981

Underneath one of the elevators is an art piece which is a very lifelike sculpture of a man dressed up like a tourist, sitting on the floor next to his luggage asleep. The display is encased in plexiglass. If you walk past and glance at it you'll think it's a real person asleep next to his luggage.

Too Expensive

That article is a bunch of bull. The author must have been very bored.

I had thought about Disney building an airport, but it's just not possible. The cost of upkeep alone would put Disney under. The amount of fuel, the staff, pilots, etc. would be too expensive. The planes' price tags alone run in the high millions. In order to maintain the level of quality that Disney provides, they would have to charge outrageously high fares. If a family can get cheaper tickets from a much larger airline, like American, they would take that over Disney any day. Only diehard Disney fanatics would pay the high price of a Disney Air ticket. The number of diehards is low in comparison to the number of average vacationers going to Disney World. That small number of tickets alone would not be enough to sustain the airline.

The only possible future of this idea is to build, or outsource, a private service for people willing to pay a high price for the best Disney experience possible. Private jets or props would be the main form of transportation in an all-inclusive package including lodging and park tickets. This would be considered an elite service to those wanting a luxury trip.

Even this doesn't make since because it can be done now without building an airport. Disney created a cruise line, didn't they? Now, they should be able create an airline. It could run out of Orlando International Airport. However, the competition from other airlines would run them out. Again, back to the cost of upkeep, it still may not be possible.

It's a cool idea, but not gonna happen this decade. I hope that I may have to stick my foot in my mouth. ;)

I think some people are forgeting one thing here I have never heard that Walt wanted to start an airline ,just an airport. and the idea was because McCord/OIA terminal had only 8 to 10 gates and not much in regular service in 1966.

I first noticed that sculpture when I went to OIA last month. I agree it is very realistic and kinda freaks you out the first time
