There is a very large liability associated with having an airport on Disney property... Just imagine if there was an accident at the airport... The press would have a feeding frenzy...
Yes, but there has been a lot of accidents at JFK and people still go there, and many other airports around the world.

Ah, the DC-3, a great airplane!

It's not that people wouldn't go there, just the fact that a private company doesn't need all that bad press... Disney is already falling apart, so to speak, they don't need another "nail in the coffin"... Plus there is a large financial stress put on any company that is involved in a major accident or disaster...

Yes, but is it there fault if it did happen? They didn't do anything to cause it if it did happen. It was their airport that the plane took-off/landed.

But, pravite jets and small airplanes could land at this airport and pay a landing and parking fee. Disney just needs to build a runway and some parking spaces and a building for the guests and pilots. Do you know have much money Disney can make on this? Also, this airport could have a noise resturtions (sp) like San Diego. Only aircraft that called ahead and got the ok to land and could only land and take-off in daylight hours.

I had aready mentioned that back on page three of this thread about private planes landing at the existing strip, That was some of the original intent of that strip.

Okay, I'm new, so if one of you has already touched on this, please forgive me:

Back in the day(about 6-8 years ago), when I was still a castmember; The whole idea of the WDW Airport was thrown around in responce to a light rail system being connected from downtown Orlando to OIA and to International Dive/Universal, but not to WDW. This is when the city of Orlando was looking for a mass transit system and after the monorail system from Disney to the airport had been compleatly killed off. Disney complained and said that if it was not going to be included, it would build its own airport, have 10 carriers, and be up and running in 2 years.
This made everyone on I-Drive flip out and complain that the WDW airport would kill them, and it would have.
In the end, weather the circumstances are related or not, both plans were killed off. :veryconfu
This is what I heard, so take it with a grain of salt:)

Welcome newbie...

Although I have heard the Monorail rumors starting in 90, I never heard of any airport or a citizen up roar reguarding this. I do know this being a stockholder since I was a kid starting in around 64-65 ish untill Eisener and Co. tookover they used to release info about upcoming projects far in advance of the opening of such attraction even being in the concept phase, in the annual report. Since Eisner and co have taken over the s.o.p. is to say nothing untill constuctions starts. maybe theres a reason these days? I dont know but I would like them to say whats going on even if they later decide not to do it. But I guess the local complaints is what they want to avoid when starting a project.

Not everyone visiting Florida or Orlando stays on disney property, so the assumption that this airstrip would seem a little false. especially as most of the UKs non scheduled traffic ( the holiday maker) is now forced to land at Stanford. The Uk visitors seem to increase despite this.

One major problem is the operation of air space, it takes a lot of planning to open a new runway far less an new airport. The airspace in that part of the world is already quite congested and im pretty sure you even cut across Sanfords approach on a landing at Orlando.
And as a Disney guest would youy want passenger aircraft coming in above your nice Deluxe resort?

ok.. even if small turboprops were to fly into WDW, there is still Orlando Executive Airport (where the Disney Corporate Jets fly into) which would give Disney major competition..

I would, I have no problem with that. Also, as I have said before, it could operate only in daylight hours.

Ok, good point, but, if you were an owner and pilot of a small airplane, where would you fly to? Orlando Executive or WDW Resort Airport?

Jet noise is a problem at anytime I take it that when you visit London youll request a hotel on Heatrows flightpath or if satying in Central London something near Docklands airport will do? Most new airports ( in Europe anyway) have to comply with strict noise emitions hence whisper jets only at Docklands. If you are operating for private aircraft how do you expect to finance ther airports construction and support its operating costs.
I cant figure what the major prob is with a 20 min drive anyway?

About OIA

McCoy Air Force Base was opened in the 50s as a SAC (Strategic Air Command) base. It operated until the 70s when the government sold it to the city of Orlando for $1 in 1975 and was renamed Orlando International Airport (OIA) in 1976. OIA is still referred to by its old airport code, MCO, which stands for McCoy. The first terminal opened in 1980. 3 additional terminals were added over the next 20 years, as well as a third runway. There are now plans to build an entire new 4 terminal structure to the south of the existing 4 terminals, as well as plans for a fourth runway. This will double the capacity of OIA to 70 million passengers a year and is expected to be completed in the next 20 years.

You have some errors in this statement

1 Commercial air service was moved to McCoy in in 1962 form the old Herdon airport now called Orlando Execitive Airport

2 Wasn't renamed untill 1976

3 the first new (North) terminal was started in 1978 and opened for service in 1981

A few things,

If disney were to built its own airport on the most southern tip of property (im guessing this is where it would be built) would disney buy their own planes to fly folk in, or would they get airlines to fly folk in. Of course there are a few problems, the planes would definetly never be full, and especially now with many folk not flying because of last september, so it would be a great money loss operation to the airlines and disney. And i dunno about airbus, but boeing prices start at about $20m for a 737-500. And i cannot see disney spending this amount of money on a definite loss. The only way it mite work is if they flew to airports that could serve a large area and once or two times a week.

I think though that the airport would work best if they managed to get us Brits in. Everyday from London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Newcastle, E. Midlands, Belfast, Glasgow there are at least 3 planes with 300+ folk leaving from each of them. Most fly into the new Sanford Airport which opened in 1997 and it is 40 miles away from disney. If you got the carriers such as Britannia, My Travel, Monarch, JMC, Air 2000, European Air Charter it would work. Or, have a disney airlines and those who booked with the WDW Tavel Company UK + US and any others booked with other operators going to disney could fly out in a Disney plane and get a totally disney experience.

I think that up until last september the airports head was just above water with the hope they could get uk tourists in but i think it has gone below the water and the plans sunk.

Ok, here is my plan!

1. NO JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just props! Disney will only need to build a 3,000 foot runway. Also, jet noise is a lot more annoying than prop noise. Turst me. I work at an airport. With the hanger doors closed, you can't hear a small prop, big props a little. But a jet, that's so loud, I can hear it in the middle of my flight school building!

2. LAND AND TAKE-OFF ONLY IN DAYLIGHT HOURS!!!!!!!!!!

3. EVERYONE WILL PAY A LANDING FEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about the caps.
