Walt Disney World 2010 - Press Release

Well, at least we can thank TWDC for putting to rest what it took us 382 posts to debate in 74's WDW 2010: Same old pixie dust? thread.

This press release is sad on so many levels, not only the lack of commitment to the full FL and the DCL copy filler, but the nerve to offer up as a big finale a laundry list of stuff that's been at WDW for years.

Meh. This is all the same old blathering drivvel that everyone's already known and heard about. I think its release was timely, in that they want to take the focus off the lack of Christmas spirit they've had this year.

Or, maybe it's me....

The way they talk about "celebrating" makes me think that all the WWYC Banners will remain.
But now fortified with Muppets! :lookaroun:lol:

Am I the only one worried about the fact that Pixie Hollow isn't mention with the Fland stuff?
Perhaps it's meant to come later, after the other projects are complete.

Well, how many complaints do you think they would get if 20 jackhammers started cranking away at once? No one would be able to hear the pixies or the princess talk to the kids. So instead, its only 1 at a time.
That's true. Besides, I doubt Pixie Hollow will not be shelved so soon...

Heading for the great escape.
I can barely contain my excitement, such wonderful news. Things are looking up, Thanks to the new law enforcement officer, hes sure given things the kick in the pants that was required.

Now where did I put my gluweine?

Whaaaa? Every major expansion has taken place all day, every day in during park hours. This is a mainly isolated area that would have minimal impact on park ops. Pixar place was a in-view building site. For real mess and disruption look at Epcots entrance plaza when the tombs were installed, the hub when it was rebuilt, or Epcots central spine in Futureworld and Innoventions in 1994 - it made DCAs work look normal.

This is a phased project anyway so things will be done to a schedule. With some things not opening until 2013, some not at all.

I keep hoping the moving target and vagueness around the FL Makeover completion date means that possibly someone is listening to us on the web and will add at least another dark ride or something before this expansion is "complete" - 2013 is a long ways off.

I do have to agree that WDW's entertainment line up is pathetic for 2010 and beyond. What besides FL do they have going on?

The optimistic side of me says that too... But anyway...

Sorry if it's mentioned on another thread, but I'm on my way home from WDW and it was cool to see survey stakes all over the FL expansion area from the RR yesterday! Count me among the excited WDW newbies.

Which was my point exactly. By having a gradual phased expansion, it minimizes the disruption to guests and their experience. A small bone I guess towards show. I may have not been very clear in my prior post, but I was trying to suggest that less work is done over a longer period of time.

2010 looks like a great year... to check out Disney's competition.

Haha yeah...

So since 2009 is coming to a close, then I'm guessing that there's no 55th Anniversary event for Disneyland, besides the one that WDW Celebrations is hosting. Well, let's hope WDW's 40th doesn't get shunned. It probably will though.

What an absolute joke this "press release" has turned out to be. There is absolutely nothing of substance here whatsoever for your average walt disney world customer; a very small percentage of guests combine their vacation with a cruise and less still wish to spend their time on property watching sports which they could do at home.
Additionally, as a UK visitor who cannot take advantage of the new promotion, there is literally nothing new offered from Disney to encourage my loyalty. Oh sure, they're going to fling together some kind of muppet shambles and tag it on to a parade that has been re-worked so many times it makes my eyes water but this is the kind of "plus" Disney would just add in years gone by... not make it a crucial point in a press release.
I dread to think what the marketing department are going to dream of to plaster across next year's guide maps, I imagine it will go something like this;
"Right boys, Magic Kingdom... any ideas? How about we stick on another photo of Splash Mountain, people love that don't they? Brilliant.
Next, Epcot... anything.... anything? Ok so be it, Nemo it is.
Right MGM oh sorry DHS... getting tough now... ehhh Tower of Terror? Sure!
Finally, Animal Kingdom... oh come on, we need something before we go to lunch... ah ok then, Nemo it is!"
Ok so that's a little tongue-in-cheek but the frustration is real.
I've visited Disney 2001,2006,2008,2009 and I'm going 2010. Nothing new for either 2009 or 2010 season, it really is a crime that management get away with it. Oh I know we have a new queue for Space Mountain and some bright spark turned the lights down a bit on the ride but come on folks, get real!
The company have four theme parks in one resort and have a responsibility to ensure they continue to improve them, there is a real sense of apathy and lethargy in the air right now at WDW which is completely the opposite of Walt's dream. WDW need only look to neighbouring Universal or Seaworld to see what these growing parks have added to bolster their reputation.
Right I'm running out of steam now so I'll just sum up with this, this press relase smacks of people sitting in an office desperately trying to think of anything they can add to it to flesh it out a bit and make it look a bit more appealing. For them I have only this... you failed.

I was lucky enough to get a compy of the 2011 PR in advance. Here's a sneak peak:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.
– With a turn of the calendar comes a twist to the celebrating: In 2011, Disney Parks will continue the celebration, saluting those guests who devote their hearts and hands to make their communities better places.

One million people who perform volunteer service for a participating organization in 2011 will receive a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.

The program, called “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day,” anchors a yet another year when the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history will continue, Disney Cruise Line introduces new entertainment and activities, and Walt Disney World theme parks and Downtown Disney present 2011 editions of popular festivals and events.

Here’s a brief look …

“Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” (beginning Jan. 1) – Disney hopes to inspire families to continue to volunteer in their communities during 2011 through this popular program that “rewards” volunteer service with admission for a day to a Disney theme park. To enable people to sign up for an eligible volunteer project, Disney is working with HandsOn Network, the nation’s largest volunteer network. Guests can go to www.DisneyParks.com for the United States and Puerto Rico or www.DisneyParks.ca for Canada to search for volunteer opportunities available in those areas through HandsOn Network and sign up for a day of volunteer service. Many of the opportunities will be for projects that entire families with children age 6 or older can participate in together.

Disney’s Honorary VoluntEARS Cavalcade – Each afternoon just before the daily parade at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom (and at Disneyland Park in California), Muppets characters and parade dancers will join special floats and vehicles celebrating volunteerism and presenting Honorary VoluntEARS serving as Grand Marshals of the parades. Kermit, Miss Piggy and Sweetums will be part of the merriment, while the dancers will be donning outfits that celebrate the work of volunteers. New for 2011 - snowglobes.

Fantasyland expansion – A late-2010 groundbreaking marked the beginning of a five-year construction project that will result in a vastly expanded Magic Kingdom Fantasyland. When the project is completed (tentative timetable is 2015), guests will be able to:

  • visit a Disney princess in her castle to share a dance with Cinderella.
  • “Be Our Guest” and dine in an enchanted room inside the Beast’s time share.
  • Fly with Dumbo high above brand-new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction with a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.
  • Journey under the sea with Ariel, the Little Mermaid, in her very own attraction.
Star Tours 2 - Popular Star Wars scamp, Jar Jar Binks will host a 3-D tour of George Lucas' Skywalker ranch. Fans can thrill as George counts his money, scream as he creates another new edition of the original films in which Han Solo teaches under-priveledged kids to read and laugh as Jar Jar trips over stuff.

New Experiences at Downtown Disney - The bold new vision of Downtown Disney finally arrives in 2011 as Disney opens a hot dog place, a biker-themed BBQ joint and a store for lefties. That's right, just like the one Ned Flanders opened on the Simpsons. What? Ned lost his shirt on that? Well, they are paying the rent, so the lefties are in. Anyone want to rent a Virgin Megastore?

Walt Disney World “signature” events and festivals (throughout 2011) – The 2011 editions of seven guest-favorite theme park special events and the longest-running Walt Disney World special event, at Downtown Disney. In fact, there will be at least one special event happening on more than 160 days. Guest celebrities – from horticultural gurus to culinary wizards to national recording artists to stars of the stage and screen to heroes of courts and fields – will participate in events such as ESPN The Weekend, Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, Star Wars Weekends, Night of Joy, Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. More than 100 award-winning visual artists from across the country will “show off” at the 36th annual Festival of the Masters at Downtown Disney. Disney’s iconic “big cheese” will host Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party on select evenings. Stars from the top tier of professional baseball, professional golf and college basketball will compete when Walt Disney World Resort plays host to the Atlanta Braves’ baseball spring training, the Children’s Miracle Network Classic for PGA TOUR players, and the Old Spice Classic college basketball tournament.
