Everytime I saw a Wall-E poster at Disney this past week, I suddenly would find myself saying "Johnny Number Fiiiiive, Johnny Number Fiiiiiive" in my head over and over.

Hmmmm....

I can see a resemblance. Wall E almost looks like a baby version of Johnny 5. I thought of that right away when I first saw a preview for Wall E.

Rip-off is a very pejorative term, implying some kind of intent to copy or lack of inventiveness.

There isn’t much doubt the robots look alike, and I think somebody working on Wall-e obviously enjoyed the work done on J-5 and wanted to pay homage. It is done all the time

Take the current issue of Batman (non comic geeks, stay with me a bit). In it, the Joker is being shown some Rorschach ink blotches. What he sees is very different from what he tells the guy administering the test. “Some nice flowers”, the Joker says. This is an exact scene from Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” from 1985. The character Rorschach is also being given the same test, sees a dead dog, and answers “Some nice flowers”. I would hardly say Grant Morrison was ripping off Alan Moore, but instead paying homage to him.

Artists, writers, singers, etc pay homage to others that came before them all the time. It is no big deal.

Every movie is a rip off. Everyone must get their inspiration somewhere. So in that case then yes it would be a rip off, but not a bad thing.
