Walking, walking, walking

Our trip is coming up in late Nov. How far in advance should we start 'training' for all the walking we'll be doing while at WDW? We don't currently walk for exercise on a regular basis. Also, any suggestions on building up stamina to be able to walk those long distances for several days in a row?

Thanks!

I've been walking 3 miles per day to gear up toward my trip. Sometimes I go on my route twice depending on time. But I think beside walking I should also get used to standing for hours too.

You could stop driving your car and walk everywhere:lookaroun And then if you get tired, you can grab a bus in an effort to practice using the Disney bus system, too:D

Just kidding, sort of!! I'd say walking briskly a couple of miles a day would get you into the swing of things. But as some others have mentioned, you might practice walking short distances in that sort of walk/run fashion (imagine your trying to beat a large family getting into a line;)) and then immediately stand (or inch along at a pretty slow pace) for about 20-50 minutes.

Good Luck and enjoy your trip!

I think the most important thing is to make sure that you have a good pair of sneakers that are broken in. If you do any kind of regular exercise I'm sure you'll be fine...if not you'll still be fine (just maybe a little sore at night):D

Start now and keep doing it after you come back. The health benefits of "just walking" are a lot more than many people imagine. It's not all "No pain no gain" ;)

And as has been mentioned - break in any new walking shoes before you go.

Couldn't have said it better.

Start walking immediately. It is never too early to start and as mentioned before the health benefits from just walking regularly are huge. If you don't want to walk on the street or at a gym the mall is a great place to start. Many malls open early and let people come in to just walk.

For the inevitable muscle soreness a good amino acid supplement works better than any pain reliever. My personal favorite is Ageless Essentials by Oasis Life Sciences. It is a bit pricey but it works very well and very quickly.

My trip isn't until January, and a few weeks ago I started walking about 2.5 miles a day, in order to "prepare"...and, like everyone else has said, walking is extremely good for your health, so I guess it's never too early to start! :D

Do what I do and run between 7 and 9 miles 3 days a week.
Your problem will not be walking, standing will. Be prepared to stand in line for about 50 minutes for most rides and 1 hour and 30 minutes for night time shows.

I bring an extra pair of sneakers to change off every other day. My feet don't seem to hurt as much so quickly when I do this, because usually after the third or fourth day my feet would normally be saying not those same shoes again, I guess we're walking another 10 miles today.

These are the best pair of walking shoes I have ever owned. They are extremely comfortable, light and very long lasting. Not the best looking but your feet will thank you.

While they may not be the best looking, neither are those Crocs that people swear by either, you must do what works for your feet.

That reminds me of our last trip. My DS age 9 had gotten his shoes soaked in the fountains at Epcot, so when we went back to MK for EMH that night, he wore his croc shoes. There was a CM at Astro Orbitor wearing a pair and commented on my son's wonderful choice of footwear. She said they were the most comfortable thing to stand in all day. But, my son said he didn't want to wear them to a park again later that night! Me....I couldn't imagine walking in them for long distances, we brought them for the water parks.

As for walking, as others had mentioned...start now! Not just for Disney, but for our overall well-being. I walk daily and now that the kids are back to school, a friend and I walk every morning.

Drink pleanty of fluid (water and juice). Start now so you are in the habit when you get there. Proper hydration is a key element in extended physical activity.

We took a pedometer on one of our trips last year and found that we walked 5-7 miles a day while in the World - and we are not marathon park hoppers by any stretch!

More than anything, your feet will hurt. Take at least two pair of broken in good walking shoes and alternate wearing them. I take one pair of walking sneakers and one pair of walking sandals - neither pair hits the same pressure points, and my tootsies enjoy the fresh air on sandal day! :p

Have a great trip!

It's not the walking I have a problem with. It's the standing around that bothers me. Stand in this line, stand in that line, stand for this parade, stand for that fireworks show. It's all the standing, standing, standing!!!!:hammer:
