Walking for Disney?

I was just wondering if any of you guys ever start walking to prepare for your trips to the World? I go to the gym a couple of times a week, but I kind of want to convert some of those days into walking the track. Any suggestions for how many miles I should do/start out with/end up at? I leave in 27 days and couldn't be more excited!

It would depend upon how in shape you are. If you already spend a lot of time on your feet all day you will be in better shape than someone who sits at a desk all day.

I'd recommend walking at least a couple miles as day.

I have heard the average person walks about 7 miles per day at Disney. I believe that based on my experiences. Bring comfortable shoes, also the standing around / standing in line can be hard on you too.

My family gets ready for Disney by walking. We live in a small town(900 people) and so we are going to walk around town this year to get ready. It really helps the kids to build up stamina so that we don't hear "My feet hurt, my legs are tired". We walk our 2 youngest 10 and 8 at least a month before, it really helps us too. I would say at least 3-5 miles.

I make a conscious effort to walk at least a mile a day, weather permitting. About 2 months out from my trip, I work up to 4 miles a day.

One more tip - wear the shoes you're planning on wearing for your trip - do not buy new shoes the day before you leave.....

This thread has reminded me that I really need to get walking before October comes around....

I had 3 surgeries in 3 months this past spring (all out-patient and fairly common things) and I'm finally feeling well enough to get back into a regular exercise routine. It just seems so intimidating but the thought of all that walking at WDW is even MORE intimidating! Oh and I'm making a point to remember my pedometer this trip. I always say I will pack it and end up forgetting.

Before out last vacation I started taking my 5 yr old on my walks. Atleast 1 1/2 to 2 miles a day. Out of the whole vacation she only asked to sit once!

Like Tiggerfanatic said, make sure to wear the shoes that you will be wearing to disney when you walk.

One thing that helps us keep walking is to walk to tanning before a trip. I burn easily and it does help to get a base, but that is beside the point.

The actual point I'm trying to make is to set a place to walk to so you aren't taking walks to nowhere and getting bored with it. For instance, if you have a post office a mile or two away, start walking your mail there in the evening or walk to the store to get a paper, ect. I wouldn't recommend walking to the liquor store. Those cases of beer can sure get heavy on the walk home :ROFLOL:

I walk a ton at work and have two dogs so I walk a lot at home too. I always wear CROCS, so I never have sore feet. Walking at Disney is never an issue for me. I would start asap walking in the shoes you intend on wearing there, just to break them in, unless you get smart and buy CROCS then there is no need to break them in cause they are the most comfortable shoe ever. Another idea is to get some dogs and then you have to walk everyday! Gotta love dogs!
