Wal-Mart? GOOD or BAD

Before I worked for Disney, I worked for my hometown Wal*Mart SuperCenter. Actually, when I first started with them, we were just a GM store. (General Merchandise) However, we went through a year long conversion process that made us a SuperCenter.

I was with the Wal*Mart company for about 3 years. In that time, I grew to really respect the company. My store was an amazing store. We all were like Family to each other. And that includes our customers. My store was always immaculate. Very clean, very neat, everything in its place. Everyone was always so friendly. We were truly a model store... kinda like the ones you see in the commercials. :)

During my service, I often times was asked to travel to other stores to help them out with certain projects. While the other stores in my area were nice... they never had the same feeling, and I never really liked them.

My store was very Customer Service oriented. We'd do everything in our power to make sure that the customer was satisfied. I remember one time I was called to the customer service desk because the customer wanted to return a folding camping chair, and the clerk couldn't get the item to ring up. Turns out, the chair was from Sears. However, instead of telling the customer "Sorry, we can't do anything for you." we took that chair back, and gave them a store credit for the price of a comparable item ($15). That customer then spent over $150 in our store that day, and became a regular shopper.

Now... I will say, not all Wal*Marts are as cheery and wonderful as my old store was. When I moved down to Florida, in order to have a job when I got down here, I transferred to the store in Kissimmee. What a HORRIBLE store that is. It's dark, dirty, disgusting, everything is out of place, nothing is in order, very run down, the employees are crabby, half of them dont even speak English... I avoid that store like the plague.

So... for those of you who have stores like the one in Kissimmee... yucky ones... Please don't think every Wal*Mart is like that. There are some really wonderful stores out there, with really hard working people, who deserve the credit they've earned. :)

You are right on that! There was never an "associate" around when you needed him! Some areas were really messy and the customer service area was not very pleasant either.
I had no choice most of the times so I shopped there. But I did it many times after midnight and it was soooo nice! A lot less people, no wait for the registers, and since it was when they replenished the store racks, there were always a lot of associates who could get me my merchandise or tell me where everything was! I loved going at midnight!

The one here is nicer, but not as big as that one. For those sizes, we have Carrefour, a french chain, which is as big as Super Walmart, but I honestly don´t feel like walking all that to buy groceries.... :animwink:

I will say I am so impressed at Target how they front all there products, if you go in close to closing you see them going through every aisle doing it. And honestly I feel like Target is the same price on the everyday needs stuff. So I usually run in there because it is less crowded. I call Target the upscale discount store since they have michael graves and Todd Oldham collections. And plus they have the HOTTEST BOIS!!!!!

So I will go to either Walmart or Target. Now I would rather drive an extra 15 miles to pass a Kmart up, what a dump!!

What is Bois?

I call Target "Targée"...sounds more stylish  I have bought clothes there and in WalMart and the quality of the clothes in Targée is better than in Walmart. I still have two "suede" suits that I love and always get compliments about. If they only knew how much I paid for them and where I got them...! :goodnevil muahahaha! :animwink:

Wal-Mart has been in my town (Boutte) since January 2001. I am personal friends with the store director, personnel manager, and plenty associates. We had all worked together for Delchamps, which went bankrupt after alot of us had worked there 20years. New Orleans Walmarts are filthy and impossible to keep in order. Everyweek, a handful of employees are escorted out by the police for theft. Staffing the stores has proved impossible. Where I live, the store is CLEAN, shelves blocked, re-shops done. The other stores down the bayou are better and given I am between New Orleans area and the bayou, I head down the bayou. Only one small pet shop has closed in Boutte since Walmart.
Target hasn't been open 6 months here, so I can't really voice an opinion. I visited once. and the shelves were bare. They do have a cool escalator though:D .
Why do I not work at Wal-Mart? The hours and what I put up with in the grocery business for 20 years. See, I was extremely cross trained. Thus if I was scheduled for floral, and the cake decorator couldn't handle the order specified, I was pulled to that dept. Then, this past hurricane reminded me of the other side of retail. Working, sometimes six hours straight, like a dog, then you get to ______, then get called back to the register, for another 6-8 hours. The people who didn't show up as scheduled weren't penalized, yet I wasn't paid double time for my double work. My friends insist it isn't like that at Wal-Mart, that they can't pull you like Delchamps did, but I don't trust it.

It's funny here in Boca. There is a Wal-Mart and a Target about a block and a light away from each other. Then you have Walgreens accross the street from both, for the smaller selection

Anyway, does anyone remember when Wal-Mart took a WWF(WWE now) figure off the shelves because they said it promoted violence because it came with a decapitated head? That was funny. It wasn't a decapitated head but a manaquin(SP?) head that the wrestler came down to the ring with as a prop. I don't remember what happened in the end though.

And is it me or is Wal-Mart a little too family friendly? I haven't seen one CD with the warning stickers on them, just the clean versions.

Wal-Mart and Target are about even here IMO.

Walmart offers a wide variety of products at a discounted price but they are always crowded with long checkout lines and the majority of customers are slime balls who look like they just escaped from prison. I choose to shop at Target instead to avoid the "low life" type of people who usuallly frequent most Walmarts.

Two new Super Walmarts were built in my area, and are OK. We finally have a Target store. I am glad they are giving Walmart and Kmart the competition.

There are still some older Walmarts around (N.O. East and on the West Bank) but I don't go to them

Is the Millenia Mall open yet? When I was down there Macy's was taking applications and the project looked about 90% completed. It's a very pur-tah mall.

were we live we have more walmarts than most places have businesses. But the won't give us a Super Wal-Mart. I can count 3 Wal-Marts within a 5 mile radius and I am probably missing one or two. When we go on vacation and go to the Super Wal-Mart it's like the difference between a Grocery store and that guy on the end of the block that gets 14 bucks for a can of soup. I mean you could lost in those things. Even do your banking... Does that :) bounce around your Wal-Mart. My daughter has been looking for it for years :)

my Super Wal-Mart is my personal fave out of the 3 that i frequent. mine seems to have more variety (not to mention a better selection of toys!) to me, the way mine is laid out is just more pleasing to the eye: home and garden to the left, groceries to the right) my least fave is the one in Owensboro...they built a nice, big Wal-Mart, which was great before i went into Super Wal-Mart for the first time, but then they decided to turn it into a Super. so the 'main' part has a low ceiling, and then it goes into the groceries with a higher ceiling. i hate it. the one in Madisonville is the first one i had ever seen, and i was just in awe the first time i walked in. my only complaint with that one is that the magazines and books are in the same area as the cash registers. that just annoys me for some reason. at my SW-M, the books and magazines are in the same aisle as the greeting cards...we don't have near the selection, but i just prefer them in an aisle. my only 2 complaints with my SW-M is that 1. we don't have any live lobsters in the groceries (that used to bug me when i was younger, cuz i liked looking at them...but i'm ok with it now, they kinda creep me out...plus i feel sorry for them) 2. we don't have all that great of a selection of trading cards. other than that, my wal-mart is clean, friendly, and just over all nice!

i still prefer target though. i just like target's merchandise a lot better...it all seems higher quality. and i especially like some of the holiday (esp. Halloween and Christmas) decorations! they just have stuff there that you can't find anywhere else! at least the target i go to does...my target is very trendy!! :D
