Wacky Carry on Rumor

Hey all,

My friend just returned from a quick jaunt to southern FL. She mentioned that while she was checking in for her Allegiant flight, she witnessed a giant altercation between a passenger and a ticket agent over a piece of carry on that wouldn't fit in the sample size area.

Apparently, after the altercation, my friend and her boyfriend were chatting with the agent who said that starting soon, no carry-on luggage at all would be allowed. He said that a personal item, such as purse, laptop or jacket, etc. would still be acceptable, but that ALL airlines would be enforcing this rule very soon.

Has anyone else heard anything about this?:)

It would not surprise me at all.
Less weight = less fuel.

The only way there will be less weight is if they limit the number of bags you can bring (carry on or checked) period. If it comes to be that you can't carry on baggage, only a personal item, then people are going to check it. Whether the weight is in the overhead bin or in the cargo hold, I don't see how there will be less weight??

Overall, I forsee this being a nightmare and angering lots of people if it comes true.

I know all airlines are enforcing the carry on size limit, but I haven't heard no carry on yet. Too many people fly with just a carry on for business, don't think they want to alienate an entire group of fliers.

There won't be less weight. You gotta take what you gotta have. The airlines are playing games with the real cost of travel - Allegiant is one of the worst.

$59 one way ticket, plus taxes.

Oh, you want to check a bag - that's extra.

you want to have a seat assignment - that's extra.

you want a soda or small snack - yep, that's extra.

***
People try to get around the extra charges by packing light and carrying on their luggage, and if the airline takes the position that won't be allowed, then it will only be a matter of time before some other airline just jacks up the seat price and says "fly with us - this is our rate and we don't charge extra for bringing luggage or drinking a soda."

oh, wait - Southwest is already running that ad!

I will start this response by saying that I don't ever travel for business, so I am not an "elite" traveler:lol: I'm just a regular schmo that travels once a year or so for vacation.

But I was thinking, "Hmm. Maybe this is a good idea. Maybe it will speed up the whole loading/unloading process, since folks won't be trying to jam their enormous suitcases into the carry-on bins"

Is that just me?:lookaroun:eek:

Being a frequent travel, I can say this would stink. It's bad enough that they charge for any bags, but carry on is a must sometimes.

For overnight trips, with a stop in ATL, I would hate to check my bag. I can't say how many times my bag did not make it to the desination. Working, sleeping, and traveling in the same clothes is never fun.

I don't think they could ever enforce this rule, I could easily see them charging for carry on but not eliminating carry on. There are many times when you need a carry on. I could see a lot of unhappy people if I could not bring a carry on with me.- Oh, sorry about the smell I can't change my one year, diapers and wipes are checked. Oh, sorry about the 5 year old kicking your seat and being loud her coloring books and small toys to keep her busy are checked:lol:.

All airlines eliminating carry-ons? That seems far-fetched. What about all the people on standby?

Maybe the guy was just participating in wishful thinking...

Coming from somebody who has more knowledge in aviation, then Disney I would say that's not true. I've not heard of this rule yet though, I have heard that some airlines are going to be charging for the 1st checked bag now. But if it were to EVER come true, Southwest would NOT enforce that rule, there-for "raking in the dough" that all the other airlines are losing.

Very likely, it was the employee's personal opinion/guess.

Front line employees are usually the last to know anything, in any industry. If something like this were to occur, that employee would probably be trained on the new rule a day or 2 before it went into effect.

Are we sure this is trying to 'stop' carry on luggage and not an attempt to just manage the size and quantity of carry-on luggage? The airlines have had rules about the size of individual carry-on items for years, but have been less than strict about enforcing them. I long ago lost count of the times I've seen people haul bags onto the plane that had no chance of fitting in the overhead even if they were the only person on the plane.

The moment all of these fees for checked baggage kicked in you start seeing people bringing their lives possessions in carry-on bags trying to avoid the checked bag fee, and then trying to jam everything into the overhead bins. The best way for the airline to deal with it is to enforce the size constraint on overheads that has always been there to manage the limited amount of overhead bin space.

I've already been fedexing my luggage to my destination due to incidents in which the TSA and/or baggage handlers have stolen/damaged items in my checked luggage. It's more convenient (and sometimes cheaper) to Fedex than it is pay exorbitant oversize/overweight fees and to deal the bureaucracies responsible for the damaged/missing items.

If this is truly going to happen, I foresee longer lines at the Fedex counter.

Charging to carry extra bags may discourage passengers from carrying extra bags.

I think the airlines were stupid for charging for even one checked bag. All that did was make people want to pack more crap into bigger carry ons.
