I love Disney World!!!!!!

Having said that, compared to other choices on that list, I could not vote for WDW as what symbolizes America. WDW is a great place. However, the USA is a much bigger ideal than a theme park. I recently took a trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota to hike and explore the National Parks and Monuments. I was amazed at how great Mount Rushmore was. It really moved me more than I expected. The principles of freedom, liberty, and justice that this country was founded upon are so much bigger than the mouse. I think it would be big mistake to vote WDW in this pole and am very glad that the Statue of Liberty is ahead in the poll (though Mount Rushmore would be a better vote IMO). WDW is a great part of America and an essential part of America - but it does not SYMBOLIZE America.

I personally think that Colonial Williamsburg (www.history.org) should be on there, and I don't know why it's not.

But since it is not, I voted for WDW. (Even though I was tempted to vote for Lady Liberty -- which was actually a gift from the French.) Walt Disney World is a personal favorite, but I do think that it is very patriotic (Golden Dreams, Main Street USA, Frontierland, Hall of Presidents, etc.) and also a symbol of some very American enterprise -- and multi-cultural to boot!

While I agree with you that WDW should not be #1 given our history and what we stand for, I disagree that it does not symbolize America. WDW is a shining example of American capitalism at its finest, something none of those other things truly represent. It is one man's vision, and one enterprise's realization of a world full of creativity, amusement, leisure, and indulgence. Those things definitely symbolize America. I think it belongs ahead of Faneuil Hall and the Washington monument. I'll give you the other 4.

Well the cynic in me thinks that whatever wins will be the next target in the US for terrorists :(. It upsets me that this is the way I think on things like this now :(.

On a side note I would think that the Statue of Liberty was the first thing many immigrants saw upon entering America. This has been the symbol of America for many generations.
