Some rough guesstimates based on pics and video, all theoretical and based on 30 second dispatch intervals. Hopefully someone more in the know can clarify further.
  • Ko'okiri Body Plunge drop slide: 120 guests/hour (1 person every 30 seconds)
  • Kala and Tai Nui drop slides: 240/hour (2 slides with 1 person every 30 seconds)
  • Punga Racers: 480/hour (4 slides with 1 person every 30 seconds)
  • Taniwha Tubes: 480/hour (4 slides with 1 person every 30 seconds)
  • Maku round raft ride (6 person rafts): 720/hour -- 480/hour with 4 per raft
  • Puihi round raft ride (6 person rafts): 720/hour -- 480/hour with 4 per raft
  • Ohyah: 120/hour (1 person every 30 seconds)
  • Ohno: 120/hour (1 person every 30 seconds)
  • Honu raft slide (5 person rafts): 600/hour -- 360/hour with 3 per raft
  • Ika Moana raft slide (5 person rafts): 600/hour -- 360/hour with 3 per raft
  • Krakatau Water Coaster (4 person rafts): 720/hour with 4 per raft launching every 20 seconds -- 540/hour with 3 per raft
Of course I may be way off on my 30 second intervals but it's all a guessing game anyway!

So assuming I'm doing this right....throwing out Krakatau since I believe you can queue on that and one other ride now, VB should have a potential to process about 3000 guests an hour. So 10000 in park would explain 3 hour waits across the board. But none of the pictures I saw indicated crowd sizes that big...maybe the wave pool and rivers eat up more people that I think?

Does seem like this might be an education issue. Not sure how many people would actually stand in a queue with a 3 hour wait time (or enter a park with 3 hour waits for everything), versus how many people would go ahead and tap even with a 3 hour wait time not understanding what it really means. Again not great, but hopefully manageable post Memorial Day weekend crowds?

I think it just needs to be worked out. You might as well tap your wristband for that must do ride, while you would not wait in a line for the equal amount of time. There needs to be some penalty for not showing up I think.

Looking at the trip Advisor reviews, I see lots of the same issues coming up.. running out of lockers, long waits for food, hot walkways, cold water, and an almost universal hatred of Tapu Tapu . Most are saying arrive before 10 or you are out of luck. Only being able to ride 2 or 3 slides is not going to cut it unless something is fixed. Could be inefficient loading, maybe people aren't getting in line in time when buzzed? I am not sure what the issue is. Hopefully they get it resolved soon as it looks like many many people are getting upset about it.
I myself have not been to a water park in probably 10 years or so, but I never remember physical ques being more than maybe 45 minutes at most. I could be wrong, but it felt like I could ride most water slides and this was at Wet N Wild in its heyday.

Planning on going around July 4 but honestly if these aren't fixed by then I'll probably just wait til later in the summer or next spring. I'd like to think they could flesh most of these issues out within a month but maybe not

As far as the locker complaint I wonder if they know there are 4 separate locker areas? I have heard of 2 being full but I don't think they all were. There just were not enough people there to do that before it closed for capacity.

I have not been there so I can't say, but it looks like there is not a lot of signs telling people where lockers are. It also appears that chairs run out fast too.

It amazes me all the shade thrown at VB! Opening weekend on a HOLIDAY WEEKEND. I'm sure the other parks were madness as well. For us SW Floridians it's like saying the beach is crowded and there's too many drunks on Memorial Day Weekend. DUH! As for the Tripadvisor reviews, I take them with a grain of salt- a LOT of them are just angry entitled people. And like a few others have said, I'd much rather be waiting in a pool or at a bar than in the blazing sun on a stairwell. Remove Tapu Tapu- you're waiting in line not doing anything else.

It's kind of like disguising a negative with a 'positive' saying that though. Let's be honest making water parks with slides isn't a new science, it's been around for ages. The formula will involve capacity (of which you set a limit), the number of slides to spread the queues and the speed the people can get through the slides. Opening days or busy periods will always alter wait times along with popular slides attracting more guests, again however limiting capacity will counter these situations and isn't new thinking.

I'm guessing that Universal didn't want to be accused of copying Disney with FP+ and so thought up the innovative virtual queuing system. Right now though it seems they've over complicated something where there was not really a need to do so? Credit to them to be trying out new things, that's how things can become better and benefit folk in the long run. And before people think I'm anti Universal or just being overly negative for the sake of it, I'm not. I made a thread when FP+ was introduced at Disney saying how I didn't much care for the new system of booking FP's 30/60 days in advance and I still stand by (no pun intended) that belief.

I'm sure Tapu, Tapu software can be adjusted though (if not, somebody has really screwed up) and there must be a number of alternative uses of it to make things better. Even directly copying Disney's FP method could possibly do it with maybe 5 choices of reservations per day with the rest stand by options? Of course for this to work you'd maybe need 2 queues per slide and I don't know whether VB could accommodate that? Let's hope it improves and if not they may have to just adjust the capacity of the park to give less people a better experience.

At VB, if you arrived early and got in right at opening, the wait times weren't so bad, and there were some slides with no wait time for a period. And while you say you were willing to wait 3x as long as your 1 hour wait, the actual wait times were 6x as long later in the day... long enough that you say you wouldn't be willing to wait at Disney.

You're blaming VB for being a failure in that the park was over capacity because of the hype leading to huge wait times. Then you're commending Disney for Pandora filling to capacity and having huge wait times...
That's not exactly what I meant...
Anyway, I'm sure Volcano Bay is a great park, but you can do mostly everything at Pandora in about 2 and a half hours if you time it right (at park opening)... while you should spend all day at Volcano Bay (this making the extreme crowds unavoidable. This means you will eventually be stuck in lines with huge crowds. Also there's nothing revolutionary about slides. Sure they are super fun, I was just on a Disney Cruise and the aquaduck was fun, but there's something about mountains above you that makes a trip opening weekend far more worth it. Especially that we have annual passes and at this point it was free entry.

All I'm saying isn't that I believe we did it right by doing Pandora with moderate crowds in the early morning while waiting a year to spend a whole day at Volcano Bay. It just makes the most sense based on what we experienced.

Do they account for the time it takes to get to the ride you reserved? If people are busy eating or floating in the lazy river, I guess sometimes it could take some time before they would arrive at a ride. Would that have an impact on the system?

what other things were not open this opening week
Review from IU
Long time lurker of the thread. My wife, 7 year old boy, and myself went to Volcano Bay on both Sunday and Monday. We stayed at Cabana Bay Sunday night so we had early entry both days. We were in Americana building and it was an easy 5 minute walk to the park. We arrived both days at 7:30 am. Both days we were basically first in line. At rope drop we made a bee line for chairs in front of the wave pool and both days were were able to find chairs with a big umbrella.

On Sunday we rode the coaster twice in a row before it eventually went down several times. We all loved the coaster. We tried to ride Honu but it was not operating yet. We then rode Maku and Puihi back to back with no wait. We loved Puihi but felt Maku was pretty tame. We then rode one of the tube rides. It was Ok but nothing that different than any other water park. We walked over to ride Honu again and it was a madhouse at the todems as it had just opened up. This is an area that can use some work. The tap on todems are too close the ride entrance and we had a difficult time getting to the entrance when it was our time to come back. We rode Ika Moana because that is what we tapped in the rush to get a time. It was ok but does not really compare to Honu in terms of excitement. We then wanted to do the racers but it was not operating at the time.

By about 9:30 we had already ridden a decent amount of the rides we wanted to go on. We knew were were coming back the next day so we didn't really feel the pressure to do everything. (We had no plans to do the Volcano slides on this trip) We then spent some time in the lazy river. We got tubes pretty easy but later on it was more difficult but nothing compared to the "fearless river". On Sunday they were allowing tube pick ups at both locations. On Monday you could only drop off at the main entrance but could do both at the secondary location which appeared to work better as there is a clear entrance and exit there. The fearless river was probably the biggest disappointment. If you were lucky to catch a wave when it came around it was fun for a couple of seconds but after that it was pretty calm. I was hoping the river would be closer to the one in Atlantis or Aquatica. Maybe it is not fully functioning yet?

On Monday we pretty much rode all the rides we wanted again before 10:00 am. The drop slide was great and we rode the racer slides a couple of times which were fun. We did the tube ride again and finally got to ride Honu which was a blast. My son loved the slides in the kid area but beyond the slides there really isn't that much else to do in there. Not all the water features were working. The area under the kid slides is kind of wasted space. No one was going back there.

The lines to get food both days were very long. I used to work in the restaurant industry and I could tell the workers in the back of the house were struggling. We had tacos, pizza, and chicken tenders. The food was ok and what I would expect at any park.

Overall we had fun both days. We left both days at around 2:00 or 3:00. It did get very crowded both days but it never got the point of being unbearable. I cant say we really even used the TapuTapu that much as we could walk on most rides in the morning. As the wait times got longer we just stopped tapping and went in the rivers and the wave pool. We waited about 15 minutes in line at the coaster when we did tap and about the same at Honu. We did notice at times the lines would get pretty long on the stairs. I think part of that is when your ride is ready you can go whenever you want and when the ride would break and them come back online people would flood the ride all at the same time.

One thing we noticed was that sand was EVERYWHERE. I cant even imagine how difficult it is to keep the areas clean. It ended up on all the stairs and the walkways. The sand along with the walkways also got extremely hot in the afternoon so wear your flops or water shoes when walking around if you find that uncomfortable. The water jets on the walkways were a nice touch.

One thing we also noticed was that people were making their own walkways through sand and the landscaping. If you want a quiet pair of chairs pick some that are away from the rivers or main walkways.

Sorry for the long review. Use this review as a gauge as what to expect if you are an early riser and staying at a resort. I think the extra hour makes a huge difference. I am sure the experience arriving at 10:00 am is completely different right now. Hopefully they can fix the issues with the wait times so people not staying at the resorts can have an enjoyable day as well.

I would not say it's better. It's fine if you have early access when the park is empty and you try to make all the slides before 10. Then, once it gets crowded, you can forget about doing anything more than two or three rides for the rest of the day.

If you are not staying at one of Universal Hotel, this park seems to be a nightmare...

I don't get it. How do you go on all the slides in the morning if there are no standby lines?

From what I understand, if there is a minimal line during the early hours, the tap stations display 'Ride Now' rather than a return time. Then you just hop in the queue immediately and have a short wait.
