I was at Virgin Megastore last night, and their closing sale has started. So far, all CD's and DVD's and books are 20% off of their original price (often much higher than what they were previously selling for). Video games and electronics are mostly 10% off, with iPods 5% off. Clothing and the like is 20% off. Signs were advertising "up to 30% OFF on All Merchandise," but the only things I saw for 30% off were periodicals and a few posters by the main checkout.

The Clearance Sale prices at the Times Square location were more expensive then the regular prices! They eliminate all the sale items and bring them back to full price...and then take the clearance discount on full price. There were DVDs in their $10 bin that went back up to even more than the non-sale price. It was ridiculous.

This is very common from what I hear. Recently when the chain Circuit City went out of business, the local news station covered this. They said that the companies higher outside firms to do the sell off, and they are notorious for marking up the prices before taking the discounts.

What ashame, Im definately going to miss the virgin store. I still have a gift card from there that has like $10 on it but I cant find the damn thing. Wish it would still be around atleast until July if I decide to go. Ah whatever, it could be worse I guess.

This is sad, but I always thought that a "Virgin" store at DTD was a little bit edgie. I can't wait to see what takes its place - hopefully something good!

That is very true, at least from what I've experienced. Out of curiousity I went into our local Circuit City to check out if there was anything at a good, discounted price. But the prices were ridiculous. Definitely not worth it. With the liquidation, not only were the prices horrible, but you get no buyer's security. There was no refunds or returns or exchanges, no warrenties. If what you bought was broke when you got home, you were out of luck. All sales are final, so said the signs throughout the store.

(Just an example of how bad the prices were, a laptop I had bought literally a couple weeks earlier for $630 at Best Buy, was around $900, at Circuit City's liquidation sale.)

I know Circuit City is not related to DTD or the Virgin Store, but I'm just saying, even with the big "Going Out Of Business Sale" or whatever, you're still probably not getting a great deal...

This is the same liquidation company who handled Circuit City's going out of business sale. Everything is marked up and then discounted.

Their job is to try to get as much money as possible before going bankrupt - not to offer amazing deals.

The marked up prices that they are discounting from are not made up prices. They may not be marked down from the price that the items were selling for in the store before the liquidation, but by law they can not make up prices. The prices they are using are the MSRP and not the original store price.

You can find most of what they are discounting elsewhere for less especially DVDs & CDs.

Oh good, it'll still be there when I go next month. Can't wait to pick around the carcass then and see if I can find any good meats.

something else about circut city, in one store, not sure which one but one of the employee's was arrested for taking the memory out of the pc's before they were sold, hence no returns they were all worthless.

I urge everyone to consider this... they haven't set the last day as May 31st... people at Virgin have been saying "Sometime in May" so it could be sooner than May 31st. I'm not saying that's the case, and it's probably not, I just don't want anyone to be severely disappointed in case it happens.

Also, the sales aren't that bad and they're gonna get better. 20% off for starters (but it's on everything except for the few things that are 30% off) and the discount will get deeper soon enough. Perhaps by next week.

Considering that the normal AP discount was 10%; 20% is nothing. Ironically, it appeared that less people were purchasing stuff then normal (which could be due to the fact that Virgin really only sold a mass of merchandise when they had their $10 sales). The prices are still too high (and way above what you could find at Best Buy or online at Amazon). Unless you are looking for discounted magazines - hold off on this sale until CD's and DVD's hit 40%.
