Hey all i need help picking out a video cam. no one seems to know really what they are talking about in stores so i thought id ask here and see what you use and what works really well. I want to have one for my trip comming soon and my dads is 7+ years old and bulky to say the least.

So tell me what you use and if it works out well for you.

What im looking for is it has to have good quality capturing capability since alot of my tv's are bigger and i dont want a crappy video.
- I do not want a dvd cam or a flash memory cam
-Must be able to shoot VERY well in low light condistions
-around $600

If you don't want DVD or Flash Memory then I assume you're still happy to record on tape or a recorder with a built in hard drive. Hi8 is the better of the two tape formats.

What's wrong with DVD or Flash ?

We have a sony Handycam HDD (Hard Disk Drive with a 60 GB (41 hours of recording. We love it it is light and works great! It is more then $600 but we think it is well worth it!

flash mem doesnt seem to hold enough record time for me and i want some type of digital media ( i was leaning to HDD) my fear with dvd'sis they get scratched and wont stand the test of time as well then if i stored it on a hard disk and could make dvd's at my leasure

I would consider getting a camera with an SD slot. Until a couple of months ago I was dead against them despite the benefit of cheap media. However, my dad just bought a great little camera and the quality is fantastic. The only downside is that the battery is not removable so you need to be able to charge at the wall. Probably not ideal for a day in WDW.

I still stand to my suggestion ..

and regarding media cards (SDHC) .. you'll only love this media until you got a static discharge on one of the cards contatcs (when changing the cards) .. all your data gone forever

this is why I don't like the new canon eos 450d .. compact flash is much more sturdy

Valid point, SD cards aren't nearly as great as CF cards, but then SD lovers argue that CF slots are prone to bending the contacts inside the slot. In my 4 years of owning a camera with a CF slot, never once have I had trouble with it. I'll swear by CF.

Hard drives on the other hand, I've had numerous crashes and failures. Delayed write failures are really common too. HDD are a fad and will soon be gone.

Mini-DV or CF (P2) is the only way I'd go.
