Update on the Internet slowdown today
Apparently, I was mistaken about the problem being in the Southeast US. It started in the Northwest US region and has caused problems worldwide. At any rate, the problem is much bigger than the Lyon link.
For those who are interested in the technical jargon (both of you), here's the straight scoop from the Arkansas Dept of Information Systems network guru, explaining the slowdown:
There is also a problem on the Internet this afternoon. Someone inserted a /8 static route statement that has resulted in the need to reboot about 50 routers in the Ameritech region, mostly in the N.W. Continental United States. Having to reboot these routers is causing some world wide BGP bouncing and flapping.
These are the folks who run ARKNET (a consortium of colleges, universities, and non-profits like libraries which operates as our Internet Service Provider). They are also looking closely at statewide P2P traffic, which is a second culprit for the slowdown. I think they may be getting ready to curtail P2P traffic on a large scale. Stay tuned.
