they were said merely to give a hint as to the country in question... not because I agree. This was done because..

A- most posters reading this are american
B- most americans have that view of the country in question.

Personally, I don't agree one bit with that statement, but I said it since I felt it would give a clue as to the country in question (which has since caused me to be bombarded with PM's and IM's asking me if it's another country)

I'm very sorry to hear about your father, and I hold the utmost respect for anyone who was willing to fight but...

The comment about europe speaking german now if it weren't for america is exactly the sort of comment that turns people against you.

I know how much america's eventual entry to WWII helped, but perhaps if america had joined in earlier, as some of the other allies, such as canada, australia and new zealand did, then the war would have been very different indeed.

I realise this is all in the past now though, and things would perhaps be different were there to be another war.

Would the war in Iraq have gone the same had Britain desided to bury it's head in the sand?

It's also a line spoken by Otto in 'A Fish Called Wanda', which I think illustrates its' utter silliness.

Yup. If the US had gone in alone, the results would have been exactly the same, IMHO.

BTW - Am I the only one who's a little tired of all the little car flags? Who's going to see them overseas anyway?

This kind of statement is both inflamatory and unwarranted and I, for one, am sick of hearing about how the gold ol' boys of the USA bailed everyone else out of WWII? No one, I repeat, NO ONE, can say how WWII would have turned out if it had been played differently because it never happened that way.

As someone pointed out, the USA under the current administration has lost worldwide popularity. It is unfortunate, but I would lay the blame solidly at the door of Mr. Bush. Prior to his entering the Whitehouse the world wide opinion of the USA was much, much higher.

But with all that said, I do agree with the original sentiment expressed. Saying such a thing about another countries traditions, when a guest in that country, is a deplorable thing to do. The flag of any nation is something for the citizens of that nation to be proud of.

I'm glad someone else new from where I issued the quote :lookaroun K K K Ken. Great movie !!

And Tench, thanks for the comment about my father. Luckily he served between Koria and Vietnam. But seriously, I do, at times, wish America would let everyone fend for themselves.

If point B is true then that is a crying shame. Hollywood has a lot to answer for.

They tried that and ended up with Pearl Harbour.

If I may...(and I'll make this slightly political post short)....

The United States is the most powerful country in the world, however in an age of growing globalization, that power will diminish if arrogance and ignorance dictate its foreign policy. If we truly value our traditions and principles, we have to respect other nations and their views.

One of the major reasons that Americans are negatively viewed is because of our hypocrisy on the issue of democracy. Our Bill of Rights one of the keystones of American democracy, expresses what we stand for (including freedom of speech), yet we criticize other nations for voicing their opinions and for not supporting us...this could be seen today. (I shall not venture onto the issue of patriotism)....

The original post exemplifies the lack of respect people have for each other and other countries and their traditions. Respect is the root of any lasting peace, at least thats what I think. And in the end PEACE is better than WAR (even if special interests may dictate otherwise). :)

On a different note, I wonder if people even realize that they have the whole flag ceremony thing at MK....

It is mentioned in the Guidemap (I have a copy in my desk)

"Join us as the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Security Color Guard conducts our daily Flag Retreat Ceremony".

Plus a note to puck up the Times Guide so you know when it is.

That being said, we take care of business there not elsewhere. We should have just taken on Japan back in 1941 and let chips fall where they may in Europe.

On December 9, 1941, Germany declared war on the United States. The Germans, prior to Pearl Harbor, had been sinking American merchant vessels that were running supplies to the British. There was no avoiding the war in Europe. Plenty of Americans tried to do it, hoping it wouldn't affect us.

Political issues

I'm asking forum members to please refrain from posting topics of a political nature. Yes this may be chit chat, but overall it is a forum dedicated to the discussion of Walt Disney World. Political debates are best left to political discussion boards.

Thank you

Now, let's get back to telling Roy how to retire gracefully!:D

For someone who died fighting for Freedom both here and abroad, the Flag is more than a "Nice looking bit of cloth". As the son of a veteran, the flag we received after my father died 2 years ago is one of the most prized possesions in our house.

The death of any serviceman is a tragedy and your families loss is something that is not alien to me, but it has very little to do with my post. I am terribly sorry you were unable to see the humour in my post. However as a veteran myself (not a word we are comfortable to use here) I feel no shame for what ive written, if you wish to argue that the flag is not attractive or made from material then carry on. If what you are saying is that in your opinion that the flag is something more than that then perhaps you should read my post with a little more clarity. You will clearly see that at that point I was discussing the aesthetic quality of the flag, if this offends you I suggest you speak to Mr Hillfinger for depicting it as a fashion item. I was highlighting the irony in that many of those who espouse anti us views are simultaneously courting the culture.

If you will read my post again you will see that I was clearly stating some of the reasons why foreign nationals are painted a perception of the US and its citizens, and that perhaps your understanding of life outside the US is likewise limited because of the media coverage of such things.

Where in the course of your life would you ever feel the need to form that expression -- about ANYTHING???

I can think of quite a few Canadian and British serviceman who would share that opinion. But I think you should stop watching Hollywood movies and read some history books before you voice any more informed opinion.
