I am travelling to wdw later this year and for the first time I am no longer a dvc member. My Q is, is there really much differnece between a resort like pop century and one like Old Orleans I have stayed at the caribbean beach and but not at a value resort. On paper it doesnt look like there is alot in it?

The biggest difference you will notice is theming. The values are nothing more than a motel 6 with over the top Disney theming tacked up everywhere. The moderates provide more of what I like to call a "separation from reality". The moderates are made to look like you are anywhere but a hotel at Disney. There are also more subtle extras at the moderates which would include a TS resturant, slightly larger rooms (30 square feet +/-) themed pools and on site entertainment and activities.

For the amount of time that we actually spend in the room, there isn't much of a difference other than size of the room, pools at moderates have a slide and all moderates have a table service resturant. I have stayed in both catergories and have loved all my stays. CSR is my favorite resort though! Love the Pepper market and the ambiance of the resort alone is just incredible.

There's also a difference in amenities. Moderates have marinas, but values do not. I find it easier to justify upgrading from a Value to a Moderate than from a Moderate to a Deluxe. The next time we go to WDW as a family we'll be staying in two rooms at the CBR ... which will be cheaper than one room in most, if not all, Deluxes.

I've stayed at all the values & moderates and I have to say that I love the moderates so much better.

POFQ is my favorite of them all, and eventhough people will tell ya to save the money...its not a huge difference in price. For what you are given...like a bigger room w/ fridge, double sinks, very quiet grounds...almost as if no one is there! TS restaurant, FQ does not but you have POR that is walking distance. Nicer pools w/ slide. Boat transportation to DTD which is a great plus. Nice lounges with entertainment. Seriously the amount I paid last year to stay at POFQ for 6 nights with park hoppers, was just as cheap if not cheaper as staying at the values.

This year I had to go with a value bc of the others in our party that are going. I loved POFQ so much that I was actually thinking about staying there by myself this year while the rest stayed at Pop, but then changed my mind.

I think the moderates are much nicer, with gorgeous atmospheres. Now I could never go from Mod to Deluxe...just not worth when you aren't in the room that much.

I would assume that most people have stayed at both levels and would agree that the moderate resorts are clearly better than the value for
many reasons mentioned above.

What it comes down to is, how much $$$ do you wantto spend on a room you're barely in? For me, the hotel is defintely part of the expirence and I'm willing to spend more on the room, others don't care as much.

Either way you'll be fine. Enjoy you time!

I too think that the mod. resorts are much better than the value resorts. I have stayed at ASMusic and ASSports as well as POR and CBR. The resort grounds are so much nicer at the mods. It is a lot quieter as well. I stayed this past New Year's Eve at POR and even though the resort was packed, it always felt like we were the only ones there. The fridge in the room was also a nice plus. The price to go from a value to a mod. is completely worth it, in my opinion.

Here is a list I compiled a few months ago of the major differences between Moderates and Values:

Moderate rooms are 314 sq. ft. (except CBR rooms are 340).
Value rooms are 260 sq. ft.
The 54 square feet difference is about the size of two double beds.

Moderate rooms have a ceiling fan.
Value rooms don't.

At Moderates you can reserve/guarantee and pay extra for a king-size bed.
At Values you can't reserve/guarantee a king-size bed; you can only request one, but there is no extra charge.

Moderate rooms have a fridge.
Value rooms don't (or you'll pay $10/day to rent).

Moderate rooms have 2 sinks (except CSR's have 1).
Value rooms have 1 sink.

Moderates have a pool slide and a hot tub.
Values have neither.

Moderates provide pool towels at the main pool.
Values typically don't provide pool towels ... you must use your room towels.

Moderates' bus stops are covered (think protection from rain and hot sun).
Values' bus stops are not covered.

Moderates have lush landscaping.
Values have more "hardscaping."

Moderates have a food court AND a table-service restaurant (except POFQ ... food court only).
Values have only a food court.

Moderates have some sort of recreational activity (e.g., boat rentals, bike rentals).
Values don't have that type of recreational activity.

At Moderates, the maximum room charge limit is $1,000.
At Values, it's $500.

EXTRA CREDIT:

POFQ and POR have boat service to Downtown Disney.
CSR has queen-size beds, full room service, and a gym.
Values are much more "kid-themed" and whimsical-looking than the Moderates.

We can't do values once we have stayed at moderates/deluxes. My DS is a water slide junkie. And those value pools don't have them! :ROFLOL:plus the theming is so much better at the moderates. A nice break from fairy dust and mouse ears for the little bit of time you're there. Definately worth the extra cash (at least for me)

I appreciate all the better amenities at the moderates, I've stayed in Moderate hotels, and really the only thing that would get me to pay to stay in one again is the covered bus stops. It irks me, having to stand out in the sun/rain to wait for the bus in a value.

But it doesn't stop me from saving hundreds of dollars per trip by staying at Pop Century

We considered staying at a value resort but if you add it up it's not much of a savings. If you want a perferred room so you don't have to walk a mile to everthing it's an extra charge. If you want a fridge it's an extra charge. If you consider all the other nice extras you get at a moderate it just isn't worth the couple hundred dollar saving in my opinion.

You're right, it is not much of a savings to stay at a value, especially if you get a fridge. (plus with kids a fridge is a must)

Cleverocks summed it up verrry nicely. The few factors for us are covered bus stops, better/more frequent busing and larger rooms with double sinks (except CSR, I think). It really does matter.

Good luck.

Depends on what you are doing. We like the moderate resorts better due to the wonderful theming (POR is great). We spend alot at the resort with our girls. A TS restaurant is a plus sometimes. IMO, if you are not going to spend a lot of time at a resort, then you might want to go with a value resort.

What are you talking about? A fridge at a Value would run you $10/day extra. That still doesn't come anywhere near approaching the cost of a moderate. You can't pay for any additional amenities to be brought to what is offered at the moderates so your comment doesn't make sense. It's not like if you pay extra you will get a waterslide at Pop Centure or a cover for the bus stop. And the bus stop isn't THAT far from any of the rooms, so people who pay for "preferred" rooms really are the people PT Barnum described. Walk the extra two minutes and you'll save!

The only time where you wouldn't have much of a savings is if you chose to stay in the family suites. And the Values aren't some ghetto, roach-infested motels. Some of the people on this board really need to stop acting like staying at a Value is like staying at the Motel 6...which they are not.

Thanks Guys seems like its worth paying the little extra for mod resort. next question is which is best mod resort?
It is a toss up between Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter if you have kids with you but if you will be sans kids and would like a little bit of night life Coronado Springs would be my choice.
