Value or Moderate?

I'm planning a trip for August. Is a moderate resort incredably better than a value resort? I stayed at a delux resort the last time I went. This time I'm going with a friend on a budget.:)

If you are needing the hotel as a place to sleep only, go with the value. The rooms, while spartan, are clean and comfortable. Whenever I'm at Disney, I very rarely spend any appreciable time at the room or the hotel other than the time I spend sleeping and getting dressed for the day ahead so I usually go value.

Values are just fine if all you are looking for is a place to sleep and shower. They are basically a hotel with Disney theming tacked on. The only dinning is a food court and the only resort activities are a pool.

The moderates are a much more complete resort experiences. The rooms, lobby's, pools and landscaping all follow a particular theme and really provide an escape from reality. All but POFQ have a table service restaurant as well as a food court and there are other activities such as sury bikes, fishing, watercraft rentals etc.

If you are really on a budget, the value is the way to go. Your friend can use the extra cash to spend a bit at the parks and maybe enjoy a couple of the coolest Disney purchases! Have fun!

We usually stay at a value but this last trip moved up to a moderate. The values are nice for families but I find they are noisy. Even though we had kids with us and there were other kids at the resort, I just liked the quietness of POFQ.

Like the others have said, if you are on a budget and just need somewhere to sleep then book a value. If you want to spend some time at the resort relaxing then I recommend a moderate.

One problem with using values is the transportation stinks. I would recommend staying off-site and renting a car if I was on a budget and still wanted a decent vacation. The only down side you would face are parking fees and the lack of extra magic hours. The parking fees can be addressed by becoming a aaa member and using aaa to book your trip so you get free parking. The extra magic hours aren't available but you in all my trips down there I don't think we used them more than a couple of times.

Okay well I dont personally see that much difference in price. I would suggest POR because its just awesome. POR has a great food court, is centrally located, and the rooms are bigger than the value rooms. I dont know about the bus service because we always rent cars, but I never see huge crowds waiting for the bus so they must come often. They also supply the mini refrigerators for no extra cost. Good for keeping water and small snacks cold. Boatwrights is the restuarant there and they have great food, assuming that neither of you are veggies. I also love Fultons but any place to shop in Disney I love so you cant go by me. They have general supermarket stuff as well(water, milk, snacks, first aid, sunscreen etc..) All in all I say go for the mod its just better.

Echoing what others have said, for a few dollars more you get a lot more amenities at a moderate resort. It's well worth the few extra dollars. I have enjoyed staying at both parts of Port Orleans, and also Coronado Springs.

I think it really comes down to what you want in a room while you're there. If you're only looking for a place to sleep, shower and put your stuff, the value is the way to go. If you want to spend more time relaxing in your room or around the hotel, go higher.

For me, I can't see paying more than I need to since I'm out at the parks 95 percent of the time. I would be throwing money away by booking at a moderate or deluxe. I stay at Pop (and I'm perfectly happy with the transportation.) and am really happy with the decision.

As for off-site, I used to do that. But I've now been spoiled by staying on-site. The thought of driving to the parks every day and dealing with parking (and handling packages, etc.) just makes me cringe.

Well we have stayed at Old Key West, every value and now Coronado Springs. I'd have to give a nod to the values. We didn't really feel like we were at Disney at CSR. The place was huge, not kid friendly, very noisy and very spread out. The Dig Site pool is going to be quite a hike if you are not close to it. If you are close to the Dig Site then you aren't close to the food areas so you will still be hiking a good bit. Also, the ammenities like the boats were nice but not cheap $40 for a 30 min. boat ride for 2. The pedal boats were a better option at $6 for 30 mins. But if your friend hasn't really done Disney then you probably won't be spending a lot of time at the resorts anyway..which is why I give my nod to the values...great room, clean and if you go with Pop you have your own bus service. Besides the less money spent on the room will give your friend extra money for treats inside the parks.

We only stay at the values. We have stayed at each one. We are not in the room enough to shell out extra money for a moderate or deluxe. If you are on a budget, go with the value. We haven't found it that noisy and we stayed there before we had our son. If you are one of those who like to spend more time in your room or at the hotel in general, go with a moderate. If you are planning on spending most of your time at the parks, go with the value. We haven't found the transportation to be bad and like the food court dining option. Its great to be able to go to the food court and get a bedtime snack along with a refill for the mugs.

Hope this helps!

I don't like values because they do not have double sinks, their pools do not have "deep ends" or slides, and recreation is severly limited.

However, the food courts are very nice, the buildings and rooms are clean, and I've never experienced transportation problems. (I stayed at Pop once and the All Stars for class trips.) By no means are they bad, but for my preferences, I enjoy at least a moderate.

As others said, if you're someone who likes to spend nearly all of your time in the parks, the values will do just fine. They are very quality hotels and are always clean. I wouldn't spend the extra money if you don't think you really need it.

Go for moderate, they find even more ways to take money from you. Always great when on a budget.

Moderates all the way

My Wife and I have tayed at Dixie Landings (Riverside) exclusively our last 10 trips (since 1997, 9 since 2000).

The Values, except for the Pop Century, are kind of "out in left field" by the Animal Kingdom. If you can handle being out there and the long bus transit times (and long lines at park closings), the Values are fine.

However, the Moderates tend to be nicer and definately easier on the eyes, with the decor all around being a lot less understated. They also have shorter transit times to both Epcot and MK. We also find them to be quieter, handy at the end of the long day, even without kids.

I'd do the Standard room at Riverside or French Quarter. We use the AAA discount if no other codes are available. Riverside has a nice bar, restaraunt, and a pool bar at the right time of the year.

I suggest that you go with the Value resort. Pop would be my choice. If a good package comes out you may be able to upgrade to a moderate but I suggest saving money and going with the Value.

Have a wonderful trip!

I like the values, I have stayed at them twice now but the Moderates are my favorites. The bus transportation is better and with the Port Orleans you get the option of the boats to Downtown Disney too. If you are limited in time, being closer to the parks is a major blessing too.

I also think it depends on the number of people (especially the number of girls). With only one sink we were constantly taking turns in the morning and that were delaying us. Also the Moderates have a curtained area around the restrooms that let you have more privacy and more room than just the bathroom alone.

If you are planning for a trip far off in the future, divide the extra money to upgrade by the number of weeks intil final payment and see if you can cut that out of your regular budget. I gave up eating out before my trip and put an extra $35-45 a week in to my trip budget. Also if you are addicted to Coca-Cola like me I quite buying the smaller 16 and 20 oz soft drinks that cost more than a $1 each and bought 2 liters at $.88 each and saved another $12 a week.

Its a vacation, go all out!

I think moderates are significantly better and worth the cost, if you can afford it. But if I could only go and afford a value, I wouldn't blink.

Do you plan on hanging out at the resorts for any length of recreational time, or just as a place to crash?

Another vote for POR.

We've stayed at CBR, POR, AKL, and visited the POLY, CONTEMP, and POP.

The grounds, and food choices (when you include the ability to get to DTD by boat which is soooo nice and relaxing), and the bigger room with two sinks and a curtain make it a GREAT CHOICE.

The POP just felt like an overgrown motel 6. In additioin, the lines for the busses to the POP always seemed longer than the rest.

That being said, I'd rather stay at any of the values than choose to stay off property. When we took the bus from DTD and had to ride past all the other hotels, or on the night where we ventured into the surrounding area (Kissimmee) we were really glad to be staying on property. The Disney magic is just that good!

Have Fun!
