Vacation Countdown Discontinued

Don't know if any of you all have noticed (don't know if you really care) but my Disney countdown (in my signature) has for the moment ended. this is due to the weather (stupid snow!!!) school has been called off at LEAST once a week since the semester has started...i for one am entirely tired of it (and i'm in KY, so we're not even getting as much as the northern states! btw, you all have my sympathy!) as it stands now, we have 3 days between school letting out and our planned trip. not to mention, basketball tourney's haven't come up yet (we get out of school if the teams go to state) AND i'm a senior so it's not like i can skip school...and even if i DID want to miss graduation, i'm taking a friend and there's no way i could ask her to miss her graduation. so, alas, at the moment it looks like our trip is out, which is why i'm ending my countdown until further notice. maybe by the good graces of God a miracle will happen and it'll be back on! *sign* and i've been looking forward to taking a friend my senior year ever since 8th grade...:(
just thought i'd inform you all incase you noticed the change in my signature.

Sorry to hear about you having to put your trip on hold. I know how disappointing that can be. The snow is messing with a lot of peoples plans. Hang in there, you never know what may work out!:)

I feel so bad, mostly because I'm going to florida in late july as my graduation present to myself and I am taking my boyfriend with me. I live in CT and it looks like we won't get out until June 30 at this point, which is what I figured in the first place so I planned my trip way far in advance. I hope all goes well.

thanks for the condolenses guys!

...there's no 'hold' to it...if we don't get to go the week we planned, i doubt we'll get to go at all. i'm badly going to need a summer job, as will my sister (which she already has a summer job that she's been working at the past couple of years, but i don't know if she'll go back this year) as it is, i wasn't planning on beginning work until after i got back from FL, which was already getting me started a little late in the game. if we have to set our trip further into the summer, even a week later, then it's dooming my chances of someone hiring me, more than likely. so i feel like it's pretty much up to me...if it wasn't for me trying to get hired somewhere, we'd be home free and pretty much be able to go anytime during the summer we want. and summer's pretty much the only time we'll get to go...with my friend and i in high school and my sister in college, our breaks fall at different times, so there goes winter or spring break. *siiiiigh* sorry for all the complaining, but i just had to get all this off my chest :(

I'm sorry! :( They tack on days at the end of the semester to make up for your snow days? I grew up in warm climates, so this isn't something I know much about. If the snow days stop now, do you get to go? If so, my fingers are crossed for you: &

Good luck!

yeah, by law we HAVE to have a certain # of school days, so when we miss one due to snow or whatever then we have to make it up. right now we're up to 11 snow days that we have to make up. one of those 'snow' days was a day that the teachers made us miss because a bunch of them went to Frankfort to try to get better insurance or something. they supposedly didn't have enough subs to cover all the teachers that were going, so they just called school off. if the snow stopped now, i'd have 3 or 4 days between the last day and the night we leave. but, that's not considering basketball state tourneys (which we get off for if our teams go...and i have a feeling both boys and girls will go this year...and yes, my board of ed. is stupid enough to make us miss those days despite all these other days we have to make up) and that's not including my graduation, which who knows when that'll be set for! i'm hoping they'll have it the day after the last day.
i REALLY wished that they were considering making us go a few Sat. to make some days up...it'd drive me absolutely insane, but i'd rather do that then go on til the middle of June. but mom (who works at one of our many elementary schools) heard a board member talking about how they're not even going to consider Sat. because it eats into athletic and extra curricular activities...and nothing against the athletes, but God forbid we take away their precious time! (you gotta know my county...all the school board cares about is sports...primarily basketball) some of the other counties are going an extra 30 min a day, but i don't want to do that at all...12 days of that mess just to make up one full day...it just doesn't seem worth it.
i've thought seriously about making a petition and passing it around school to see if i could persuade someone to let us go on Sat. most of the students and teachers i've talked to are in favor of it...not making up all the days, but just knocking out a few of them. i'm not sure if it'd be a wise thing to do or not, but i really don't see how it could hurt anything. what do you all think? should i give the petition a try?

I don't suppose a petition could hurt. I bet there are lots of other people who feel the way you do, they don't want to extend the school year way into the summer.

Have they actually added the days on to the school schedule yet? I know here in Fairfax COunty they have stopped adding days on pending a decision by the school board about what to do. As you say they are considering adding time on to the day and they also have the option of asking the state to waive the mandatory number of school days due to a "natural disaster". The school board meeting was cancelled due to snow though so we have to wait till Monday to find out! All this information is available at the school district website, I don't know if you have somethiing similiar in your area.

Best of luck to you!

thanks Grumpy! :)
yeah, they've already added the days to the calendar...it's only up to June 2 or 3, so it's not too bad yet...but we still have March to contend with.
my friend has kinda talked me into holding back on the petition...as of now we can still miss a few days for state, and my trip wouldn't be hindered...but if we miss for more snow, plus miss for state, then i'll seriously look into trying to do something about it. i'll not let my trip die quietly!

I can't imagine having to go to school past June 1st. Here, the schools missed 5 days due to the hurricanes. This week, the boys were supposed to be out the entire week for Mardi Gras. Now they go back Wednesday to finish making those days up. At least they get the entire week before Easter off.

I would go this route...claim the "natural disaster"

(State and Federal employees don't need to make up work days)

 thanks, Ethyl

actually, i have some great news today! :D found out, from my vice principal (so it's official) that the state's trying to get us 5 emergency days! turns out, eastern KY's missed about 30 days so they're in desperate need of some emergency days! so they're helping us out too! AND i heard that if that's not passed (which i'm pretty sure it will be) that our board of Ed. will try to work something out where we can get out by May 30! :sohappy: so things are definately looking up!
and again, thanks to everyone for your warm wishes!
