Using DVC Points at DLR Resort

As in, when will the Grand Californian Villas be open so I can reserve a room there using regular ol' points?

Or how far in advance of a trip can I turn my DVC "vacation points" into "reservation points" in order to secure a regular hotel room at any of the three DLR hotels?

The latter question that you recited. (I don't think the Grand Californian Villas will be ready by the time of my visit in August 2009) so I'm looking to get just a regular room at the hotel.

I believe you should be able to do it pretty much any time. I think I ended up making my reservations at Grand Californian for this past January about six months prior. Even though the rates had not yet been released, they "priced" them according to the current rates with the understanding that it might increase by a handful of points once new rates came out. Give member services a call and they should be able to give you a more legitimate answer than my guess... I've only done it once, and that was with "developer points," which behave rather strangely compared to regular points.

I stayed in the GCH last February on points. About this time last year I was still waiting for the 2008 points chart to come out. I didn't make my ressie until November (when the event I was attending was finalized), so by that time, the chart had come out. I thought they were posted on dvcmember.com?

Member services can help you as well. good luck and enjoy your stay...while it cost me 138 points for a Saturday - Wed stay, it was worth it!

I don't think there's a waiting period like there would be for getting a room at a DVC resort that's not your home resort. The only thing that would hold you up would be is if the point values were undetermined. I'd say call Guest Services. Maybe, worst case scenario, the point values aren't determiend yet, so they could put a hold on a room for you (maybe with one night's deposit), and then when the points ARE figured out, they cancel your old reservation, refund your deposit, and set up a new reservation using DVC points.

Meanwhile, if you go to the DVC web site, you can find out what the current point values are and plan (almost) accordingly. I'd figure point values wouldn't change too much, just the exact dates as to when one season ends and the next begins.

I believe you can make reservations at Disney Resorts the 11 months in advance like you do with your home resort. That's what happened when we used our points to stay at AKL a couple of years ago. Let me tell you though this year we tried to stay at DL at the 11 month time frame and they were all booked when we tried to use our points, though I don't know if it was the time of year.
