Upgrades?

I was wondering if anyone has ever gotten an upgrade when they checked into their onsite hotel. If you did, how did you get one. Did you ask or did they just upgrade you. I'm asking because I'm staying at the Polynesian this May, my husband is taking me for my graduation present!! I love this board, everyone is so helpful!!!

Thanks,
Brandy

you mean a FREE upgrade? usually only going to happen if they overbooked your room class

edit: that being said, back in the summer of 03 when they had the buy 4 stay 7 deal, we got upgraded from port orleans riverside to yacht club for free, but this was at reservation and not check in

concierge water view is awesome at poly! it is, however, still nice to just go out onto the beach for viewing the MK fireworks, etc. I just wish that the 3rd floor(nice balcony) wasn't a smoking floor, as we always end up on the second floor(no balcony) to avoid the smoke.

We got an upgrade at the Caribbean Beach.. at check in they moved us to a corner room (wider, 2 sets of windows)

Funnily enough we got the same thing at DLP`s Newport Bay too! Just by smiling and looking happy (as if you wouldn`t be)

Funny thing, in all the years we've been going to WDW we've only been upgraded once... from wood to courtyard view in the WL because our requested room was not available at the time of our check in. We didn't ask, it was given to us.

The topic of upgrades comes up every few months it seems. My take on it...
(and I'm sure people won't agree and its no reflection on you or your desire for a better view because well, we all would like that)... book the vacation you can afford and enjoy it. If you get upgraded its just icing on the cake, but personally, I would never ask for something I didn't pay for.

I got upgraded from a garden wing room to a 8th floor tower room at the Contemporary Resort once.

The Shades of Green was being renovated so their guests were moved to the wing rooms at the Contemporary Resort.

I would never be so bold as to ASK for an upgrade.

That said...if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, it couldn't hurt to mention it during check-in.
Who knows what might happen?

we've never asked for an upgrade but have been upgraded many times.

coronado - std view to water view
akl from std view to savanah one time and deluxe pool another time
Akl from savanah to savanah deluxe w/king bed
we also go in slow season so not all of the rooms are filled up.

I have been upgraded many times at WL and POR. I never pay for an upgrade anymore because I take my chances it will happen when I arrive. If it does not, then it was not meant to be and I accept my standard room. Honestly, I find little difference between standard view and deluxe because I do not spend a whole lot of time in my room. I am just glad to be at WDW. :)

I've gotten upgraded at the Contemporary from a wing room to a tower room twice free of charge. We may have gotten upgraded view at certain other resorts over the course of the last 10-15 trips or so but I can't remember them all as I was pretty young. All I know is that it's AWESOME when it happens and if they'd like to upgrade me for free on my honeymoon this summer that would be nice too! :-)
