Hey folks I apologize if this has already been answered, but for the life of me, I cannot find my answer after searching the forums. I even checked on Disney world dot com but, either I'm oblivious to finding the answer or who knows what's wrong with me:lol:. If it has been answered in the forums, please ignore and if possible please post a direction to that post :) thanks. Anyway here it is......

So with Disney's new campaign coming up, "What Will You Celebrate?", Everyone knows we can all get into one park for free on our respective birthday. Now my question is, is it possible to in fact upgrade your free pass in a WDW park to a park hopper? And, if so, any idea around how much it might cost to do so?

Also sorry for posting in News & Rumors if it's not please go ahead and place where it belongs. Just thought it would be an ideal place considering it deals with the new campaign.

Yes, the Birthday Ticket can be upgraded in the same ways as any normal Magic Your Way ticket, including adding additional days and miscellaneous options. All of these are done at the standard cost the upgrade. Right now, the cost of adding the Hopper option to any ticket is $50 ($25 for FL residents).

It might be easier to opt for the i-already-have-a-ticket gift card option and just use that to pay for the upgraded pass

A few other points (at least what my understanding of the promotion is, based on what I've read on the Disney website)"

If you upgrade your birthday ticket, you'll be given a credit for the pre-tax amount of a 1-day/1-park ticket. You can use it toward a MYW, AP, PAP, AP renewal, etc. I presume that you can use it toward FL Resident tickets if you are eligible for one (because it's handled as a monetary-value upgrade).

If your vacation starts before your birthday and you intend to upgrade your ticket for use on that trip, you can pick up your Birthday Ticket up to 7 days before your birthday and upgrade it.

If you opt for the substitute 1-day ticket (that's good any day until your next birthday), the substitute ticket *cannot* be upgraded in any way. It's a 1-day/1-park ticket.

The Birthday gift card is issued for the pre-tax amount of a 1-day/1-park ticket. It remains to be seen just where you can use the card (I guess you'll get the info with the card), but it's very clear that it cannot be used for food.

Do you actually have to go to WDW on your birthday?
I mean, suppose your birthday is in August but you don't want to go to WDW in August because it's hot and crowded.
Could you use your birthday gift in October instead?

Or since you and your spouse have birthdays in different months, can you wait and go on a combined trip and use the birthday promotion?

Tks.
:)

I am bummed as we will be there during DH's actual bday but already bought 7 day hoppers...and will only be there 7 days so we can't take advantage of the free ticket....sure would be nice if they offered a free meal for the birthday person in such a situation going forward where people purchased tickets for 2009 BEFORE the announcement and cannot take advantage of the special bday ticket deal.....:animwink:

Then you ask for the gift card instead which will be about $70 and you can spend it on souveniers. You can't spend the gift card though in non-disney entities like Arribbas Brothers though.

Tinkwings, you might be able to get a credit for DH for the one day, check it out. WDW's website has a pretty good FAQ:

Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the promotion?

That'd kinda be like going into Friendly's in March and say "My birthday's not until December, but I'd like my free birthday sundae now, please..."

Basically, Disney is betting that the promotion will cause more people to plan a visit because they get a day for free. That's much more cost-effective for them than simply giving EVERY visitor to WDW in 2009 a one-day ticket...
