Universal's 4th Park!? Will it hurt Disney!?

Just being reported on Disney and More...
"Universal Studios is reportedly in development on a fourth theme park for its Orlando location that could rival nearby Walt Disney World. Disney and More reports that a fourth Universal park is in development at Orlando, currently going by code name Project 314. The outlet also says that Super Nintendo World is indeed planned for the new park, and it will include rides for Zelda and Mario Kart, as well as a Donkey Kong rollercoaster and Peach Castle at the very center. Supposedly, Universal is also in talks to try and bring Pokémon to Nintendo Land at some point. The news doesn’t stop there, though, as Universal reportedly also has its eyes set on another major Hollywood franchise. Disney and More’s source has been told that a Lord of the Rings land is also being considered for the fourth park. There have been rumors for almost ten years now that Universal wanted to bring Middle-earth to their parks, so this move could mean that the legal rights are finally in their hands.
There’s also allegedly a plan to expand Harry Potter in this new park by creating a Ministry of Magic, which would be an extension of The Wizarding World. And lastly, a new Jurassic World thrill ride based on Universal Pictures’ sequels might also make its way into the fourth park. That brings the total count to four new lands for the fourth park, which is still obviously only in development at this stage. It could be years before parkgoers see it all come to fruition, but purportedly Universal is keen to have it all completed by 2024. Hotels are already being built in the surrounding area, and they’re not wasting any time in setting it all up. Meanwhile, Disney is hard at work creating Avatar and Star Wars-themed lands, so it’ll be a literal race to the finish for who will be done first."

With this new report, do you think this will affect Disney? Do you think Disney really needs to step up new attractions and get ahead of Universal? Doesn't Super Nintendo World sound similar to Magic Kingdom(Peach Castle in the center with four lands)? Hmmm, could we see a name change for Universal Orlando to Universal World? Seems like Disney has some competition now! I just hope they vamp up their construction starting now and build QUALITY attractions ahead of Universal! So what do you think?

I keep seeing reports of Hello Kitty land coming to this new park too but this just seems like wishful thinking because of the Hello Kitty Store Universal Studios. I wouldn’t say no to it personally though.

Though it’s their 4th park, though technically third, water parks usually don’t count. Not sure where you got 5th from unless you are clickbaiting.

Your title is a little misleading.

It will be Universal's 3rd theme park or 4th if you count their water park, so I am not sure how you got 5.
Disney has 4 theme parks or 6 counting water parks.

Let's only look at the theme parks, since water parks are a different category of park.

Will Disney build a 5th park to react to Universal's new park? Maybe? They should only do it if they have maximized the capacity all of the parks. A 5th park would help draw the crowds away from the other parks. It would be more expensive to build, staff and maintain a 5th park than adding capacity to the other parks.

If you look at my assessment below, many of the parks will need capacity regardless of what Universal does.

MK is already overcrowded, the future addition of TRON in 2021 will only add to this. This park will always be a must visit for guests so it needs capacity regardless of any 5th park.

Epcot: Things are looking up here with many new additions - some welcome, others not. A couple new WS pavilions would leave this park in nice shape capacity wise.

DHS: While they are other attractions at this park, there will be only 10 rides when Galaxy's Edge is completed at the end of 2019. With the addition of another E-ticket before 2024, this park will still only have 11 rides.

Animal Kingdom: Pandora has really helped this park, but it is still low on rides and attractions. I believe they should focus using some additional areas to expand the park and add capacity. I almost always forget Planet Watch is even in that park. It would be nice to have the area connected by a new land so you could walk to it.

So I hope WDW makes sure all of the 4 parks are in good shape before adding another in response to Universal adding another.

I think it just depends on who you are. I'm sure Disney Execs and such aren't thrilled at the idea of Universal really stepping it up and trying to compete directly with Disney World (instead of being a smaller, almost complementary park). But as a consumer I am thrilled at the idea that both of them stepping it up.

Also, the post has some errors. A 5th park? Even if you count Volcano Bay as Universals 3rd park they've still gotta build the fourth one before we even think about 5. And Avatar land is already built.

PorterRedkey, your assessment sounds like an intro to a new thread!(What NEEDS to be fixed at WDW! or How would you fix or change the parks to add Capacity instead of a 5th gate!?)“Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.” - Walt Disney...

If Disney can't get current parks right, why build a 5th to be in the same state!?

There are many separate topics about this.

I think there will be a 5th park, someday - like 2035 someday. I think the California, DLP and HK resorts are ahead of us on the new park list. Capacity will require it if the other parks are not built out. My fear is that Disney will react to Universal buy opening an undeveloped 5th theme park. Not a big fear, the parks are great, but they all need something.

Hopefully, this announcement will convince Disney that they shouldn't step on the breaks after this period of expansion. If this gets Disney to build out their currents parks, I think that will be the best case for WDW.

Sounds pants. Mario Kart & Donkey Kong? I wouldn't be quivering in my boots.

And they already have Harry Potter and Jurassic Park (Jurassic World was a pretty poor sequel in any case) so building more of the same hardly sets my pulse racing.

Universal and Disney need to get back to having some original ideas, or ones at least based on classic films. It's just getting lazy now.

Anybody that loves the idea for this new Universal park, but complains about all of the IP-based attractions at WDW, is talking out of both sides of their mouth. Almost everything at Universal is IP-based. Not saying it's good or bad, just pointing out the irony.

I'm not the biggest Universal fan but some of this still sounds cool. But Peach Castle is super lame and sounds like just an attempt to compete with MK.

It has always been Universal's "thing" to be "ride the movies". Since day one, the point was to exploit Universal's catalogue. That has now expanded to become other major studio movies as well.

Disneyland, The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center, Tokyo Disneyland, Euro Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure, Tokyo DisneySEA etc were not parks intended to be exclusively (or even mostly) about rides based on Disney movies. Even Disney-MGM Studios had a mix of in-house and outside properties to broaden its appeal and potential.

You probably misread me. I want it to go to zero so I can have the parks to myself. I couldn’t care less about Universal or their mediocre content.

I thought it was just general anti-Disney sentiment. If the park's attendance actually did go to zero it would probably close. ;)
