Universal's 4th Park!? Will it hurt Disney!?

I hope Universal builds a new park. So Disney stops its reskinning craze and actually builds NEW RIDES. Could you imagine if Universal was as lazy as Disney with Harry Potter? Instead of demolishing Jaws, turning it into Harry Potter river adventures, slapping in a few animatronics of Harry Potter and then somehow roping a shark?

Edit: I'm aware a good amount of new rides are on the way. But Disney was reskinning rides for a long period of time without building anything new.

I keep seeing reports of Hello Kitty land coming to this new park too but this just seems like wishful thinking because of the Hello Kitty Store Universal Studios. I wouldn’t say no to it personally though.

Though it’s their 4th park, though technically third, water parks usually don’t count. Not sure where you got 5th from unless you are clickbaiting.

If that's the case, Disney has Six Parks. Seven if you want to count Disney Springs.

"Professor Albus, it looks like someone has a patronus of a....shark?!"

This just keeps getting better. The more Uni does, the more Disney needs to keep up. We go to both - winning. My boys are big Nintendo fans, and we're all Lord of the Rings fans. Warren Dion Smith (Weta Workshop hair and makeup artist) was at Emerald City Comic Con last month and my son had elf ears put on by him at the Weta booth. He was awesome! Would love to have LotR in a park - and Uni did Harry Potter so well, I'd look forward to see what they come up with.

The problem with Universal is that, when they do build new attractions, they throw up a bunch of screens, slap a few animatronics around them, and call it an attraction. That is just as lazy as Disney repurposing attractions.

Eh I'd say that Universal uses screens a lot better than Disney does. You can't compare Transformers and Escape From Gringotts to Navi River Journey. Now, Flight of Passage though might be comparable and is an example of when Disney tries and succeeds at putting its own spin on screen technology.

I would. Mario Kart will be a killer draw, as it's still, after all these years, the most popular title for Nintendo.

My personal favorite is Double Dash for the GameCube...
Nintendo fandom is deep, not broad. Everybody in a certain age range loved Harry Potter or was at least culturally aware of it. Nintendo fanboys are insanely passionate and loyal, but they're not huge numbers (when compared to something like Potter, Star Wars, Marvel, etc.) Nintendo, like Avatar, will need to succeed or fail on execution, not on blind love for the IP.

I think Lord of the Rings is a great theme for the park! That series of movies is a classic, and long standing favorite. What a win for Universal with that one. I think it has staying power, like HP. Disney is banking on IP's that are popular Now, not on long standing, well loved movies. Hope this is really true for Universal! If so, I can see us staying at Universal, onsite, in the future:)

Well starting with the new Harry Potter coaster Universal is moving away from heavy screen use. (Nintendo land will not be screen heavy either, a shift back to practical is happening. If you are ok with screens, never fear, as disney's two main Star Wars attractions are very screen heavy, though, as is Flight of Passage and Ratatouille but on the flipside, the Universal/Marvel Contract prevents them from doing a screen heavy ride on Guardians.

I think Universal is now going to become the go-to park in Orlando. It is only a matter of time. With the new Harry Potter additions opening up Disney won't compete with them.

Hang on, that's a post I read in 2010.

Okay, in all seriousness, this is a good thing. Competition breeds intensity. It will keep Disney on their toes. They don't need to be, because their attendance is still crushing Universal, but it is like being a star QB in the NFL but having a back-up on your team waiting for you, just in case. I don't know why people don't think this is a good thing for Universal to improve as well.

But at the end of the day Disney gets me back to their parks because of things like nostalgia, attention to detail, history, uniqueness, fantasy and allowing me to feel disconnected from things for a day. Also bringing back memories. As long as that never changes with Disney and they don't screw it up, they'll continue to be the standard. I know where the thrills are, and I love them too, but it still doesn't top the experience of Disney.

With the removal of Dragon Challenge, it's hard for me to argue that Universal is even more thrilling than Disney though. Of course there's the Hulk and Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit but the third most thrilling ride is Revenge of the Mummy and Disney has rides that top that in the thrill category.

Granted, I think Disney has a lot of things to learn from Universal. (My biggest one being the FASTPASS system.)

Lord of the Rings land would be brilliant and a big draw for me - I love the books and the films were outstanding (the Hobbit trilogy not so much) - with the rumours of an Amazon Prime/Netflix Lord of the Rings TV Series (with the highest budget ever for a TV show) in the pipeline - the interest will undoubtedly grow.

Nintendo will be an interesting one - I grew up with the SNES - Mario Kart, Zelda and Donkey Kong Country blew my mind - if its implemented correctly - the park could be fantastic. The nostalgia will draw people in the beginning but if its good - it will definitely bring people back.

Universal is in a good spot with Harry Potter- pile a couple of other franchises into that and they will be a force.

Its great to have different parks expanding but the inevitable price rise will be a pain.
