ShareSelect media have been invited by Universal Orlando to tune in to a special webcast in which “major attraction news” will be revealed. The web announcement will take place on May 19 at 10:30am, so check back here and follow us on Twitter and Facebook to find out what Universal plans to announce.

The announcement (I’m sure by no coincidence) takes place the day before Star Tours: The Adventures Continue makes its big debut at nearby Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. Depending on the scale of this “major” announcement, Universal is likely interested in stealing some of the media spotlight away from Disney.

While no further details were given in our invitation to watch the announcement featuring the Universal Creative team, it is expected that the replacement of Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast will be unveiled.

UPDATE (5/5/11): The announcement has been confirmed to include the reveal of what will replace Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast, now being said to be “based on a blockbuster film.” In addition, Universal will announce “details about a major, high-tech enhancement to one of Universal Orlando’s single most popular attractions.” No further information about that is available.

Rumors and recent “UORHints” revealed by Universal Orlando seem to point to a ride themed around “Despicable Me” will be the replacement, but that has not yet been confirmed. And, of course, it’s possible that Universal has an entirely different surprise to announce, but we won’t find that out until May 19. Let the speculation begin!

Any one have any ideas when the changes to Spiderman will be taking place? How long will it be down for? I'm there Sept 2012, with this being my favourite IOA ride, I will be really p*ssed to miss it!!!!

DESPICABLE ME ... pfft, although it did make over 500 million at the box office worldwide, even surpassing the last Shrek film. It also have a sequal in the works so kind of makes it currant, but it's hardly a title to get excited about is it.

I just expect a cheap redo of the ride, ala Star Tours.

Evidently they have been adding these new Ultra-HD cameras into ride scenes already!

That being said, I think they are just using the old film, the PR today said they will redo the film by 2012 with HD footage.

That should be as simple as flipping a switch.

I'd imagine the ride may be closed for a month or two during the off season to update the line queue and other small things though.

Nice movie, but I agree, I don't think it has a lot of staying power that an attraction would require.

Star Tours was not a cheep redo... If you have ridden it, you'd know.

Universal Parks announces new 'Despicable Me' ride, and a major face-lift for 'Spider-Man'
We all loved the yellow, pill-shaped minions populating last summer’s Despicable Me, but what would it be like to be one?

That’s the premise of Universal Studios Orlando’s new ride based on the animated hit, which the theme park announced this morning. Due in 2012, the 3-D experience, which will replace the Jimmy Neutron ride, will plop riders into the world of professed arch villain Gru and his horde of Minions in a story that takes place after the events of the film. “First you’ll be taken into Gru’s house,” says Thierry Coup, the head of Universal Creative Studio, the team developing the ride. “And then you’ll get to see his lab, and then it will get deeper and deeper into some of the areas in that world that are just fantastic.”
“I just thought it was awesome,” says Despicable Me producer Chris Meledandri. “You are creating an immersive, visceral experience. When we make a film, yes we want our films to be immersive, but when you’re in the world of the ride… your audience is going to be in your story.”

Both Coup and Meledandri say it’s too early to confirm whether any of the film’s voice cast — Steve Carell as Gru, Miranda Cosgrove as one of his adopted daughters Margo, Russell Brand as his elderly gadget guru Dr. Nefario — will participate in the ride itself, but Meledandri does note one of the film’s directors, Pierre Coffin, has been “taking a point position” in developing the story and the ride itself.

Meanwhile, one of Universal Orlando’s most popular rides, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, is getting a big-time makeover due to debut in 2012: All the CG animation is being redone and updated to cutting-edge 4K high definition. “It’s going to feel like an entirely new experience,” says Coup, “[even] if you’ve been to this attraction 100 times before.” The story itself will remain separate from any of the Sony Pictures Spidey feature films, or the infamous Broadway musical. Aw. So no singing, then? “Who knows!” chuckles Coup. We’re pretty sure he’s kidding.

The Spiderman projections are supposed to be slightly different too, with new details and such. I have a feeling it's going to be more than "just flipping a switch". It has to do with rendering new graphics, still keeping the same "clock" to sync it with vehicles, and make sure it works with HD and 3D. Also, Spiderman being a key IOA attraction, the switch outs will probably happen during the night to keep the ride open during the day.

I really liked Despicable Me. I thought it was a cute movie. I'm excited for the "interactive" dance party. It'd be cool if they used the Star Tours 2 technique by putting people's face in the ride film. It's funny to see Universal redo a simulator, and it's considered "blaahhh cheap" but when Disney redoes a simulator "OMGZZzz AAHHHHHH!!!! SOOO BESTT EVAARRR!!"

There's the youtube link, not sure if anyone had posted the 'video' same thing as the announcement though.

I also don't think Despicable Me will have enough draw to be anything that'll last. It was just like another dreamworks film, yeah it was ok, but you probably won't remember it in 5 years.

I thought this was going to be about the mini-golf .

Not too fussed about Despicable Me, not really a major announcement in my eyes, but I am excited about the upgrade of Spiderman especially after becoming addicted to Blu Ray recently.

Well, there is a sequel coming. So I'd say most will remember it in 5 years.
