Uni's New Plan For Potter Could Make Significant Dent To WDW

I expect Disney to continue sitting on its hands, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Hey hey! don't worry about that! Haven't ya heard about that hot franchise Avatar? It's the rage with all the kids these days....:lookaroun

Honestly, if they do this as said, this is a brilliant move to Uni to inflate the numbers in both the parks. People will want to come back to experience the new stuff and they get the press for connecting the two parks via Hogwarts express.

Disney needs to up their game, and I hope like David Copperfield's Magic Underground, Avatar... disappears.

Granted that I have no idea what the conversations have ever been like, but Disney really might have to swallow their pride and sit down with George Lucas again. If there was ever a time to really expand the Star Wars Universe, then it certainly would be now. Disney might have to be willing to not eat as much of the profit pie in a deal, but it would be a win for them regardless.

Ehh. I'm not crazy about this idea.

Well, no matter what an announcement brings there are always going to be some people who don't like the idea...doesn't matter what it is. The Star Wars following is enormous though, and something based upon it would be wildly popular. Like Harry, it would bring people from around the world to see it. It would also allow for the creation of a ton of unique merchandise just like Potter did.

In terms of a franchise that has a fleshed out universe, characters, locations, and possible merchandise, Star Wars trumps Avatar in most every way. I'd much rather see Lucasland :P than Avatar.

Ask people to name characters from Avatar, then Star Wars. That's all you need.

Star Wars already has a decent presence in many Disney parks, though. And to the comment that "not everyone is going to love every announcement" - duh.

No need to start an Avatar vs. Star Wars fight.

Not trying to start one, just pointing out the huge flaws that Avatar as a franchise in the parks has.
Disney has a few hurdles to cross if they want to make it something will want to come down and see as Harry has down for Universal.

Yes, Avatar doesn't have the same luxury to lend itself to merchandise like Star Wars or Harry Potter does, but I think it has all the ability to create fantastic interactive, immersive experiences.

Relating back to the topic, I hope that if Uni "fast-tracks" HP expansion construction that Disney will fast track Avatar construction and have Avatarland open closer to the release of the third movie.

Speculation and ideas are based on the assumption Disney even cares. I was thinking after the official announcement from Universal today that we would hear something at least interesting from Disney, but instead the Disney Blog posted stories about holiday songs being added for selection to American Idol, Japan's remodeled quick service location...oh, and they patted themselves on the back for Wild Africa Trek's success (yet again). Not only were they not exciting articles or announcements - they were unnecessary. Not well played if they have any interest or concern for what is going on over in Metrowest.

It'd be idiotic to think that Disney doesn't even care. But I think it'd be odd to have them post some haphazard message on their blog immediately after Uni makes an announcement.

No matter what the situation might be behind the scenes, you will never hear Disney come out in any official form and admit defeat or fear. That would be an awful PR move for any company.

There isn't a way to have something AMAZING all ready to announce the very day a competitor announces something. That's a really dumb expectation. Competition doesn't even work that way. If Disney is going to announce something in competition with the Potter announcements, it will happen way down the road. They don't just have some shelf with E-tickets waiting to be brushed off and shown to the public...

The thing is they are basing something off a franchise there has to be a personal connection to the characters that inhabit it. There is a deep connection between people and the Harry Potter characters and little to none with Avatar.
Disney could create an "immersive experience" with the millions of other ideas that they have Imagineers there to create for them, and not just ones that were popped off the movie screen cause "hey, this looks cool."
If they want a franchise that has a large marketability, great that's fine, but I have no idea why they think Avatar is it.

In terms of "fast-tracking" construction it seems that Disney is just now gestating ideas for what the actual thing will be, so it would be hard to get that moving forward.

I can see it now...

"They're expanding Potter? Quick, let's announce Night Kingdom on the blog before too many people buy tickets to Uni!"

Haphazard would not quite be the word to use. This has been quite expected. The general public has probably been aware of the "unofficial" announcement for probably over a week now. I am sure Disney has known about for even longer. An announcement (of any sort) would not necessarily be fear-based, but rather competing for space in the news.

I'm not sure why you want Disney to "fast track" anything. How is that a good thing? Nice things take time. What if they had "fast-tracked" the FLE? We'd have a much crappier land than we're even getting. Of course, you could argue that the plan should have been better in the first place, but I'm not sure why Universal's hastiness is lauded. I'd rather see them take their time. Disney too.

Uni fast tracked Harry Potter part 1...that's all I'm saying.

I believe the adjective I used was "interesting" not "amazing" or "E-ticket". Clearly, a huge announcement of those proportions couldn't (and wouldn't) be announced the same day. Disney will obviously want all the thunder when they actually do that - not share it in the news with HP.

and I say, "Meh" to that. It could have been a lot better, too. They could have taken the entire Lost Continent area and thought out how future expansions would work, and not muddled Diagon Alley with Hogsmeade. Just sayin'.
