Alien? I don’t know. Alien Encounter had everyone running.

No, no, no (ok)... While I would completely vote for Alien. I was being more G-rated, listing the past tenants (Stitch/Alien Encounter/Mission to Mars/Flight to the Moon) and voting for a Jupiter 2 overlay so we could once again get Lost in Space. I'm old, it was still on TV in reruns when I was young and I'm one of 3 people I've heard of that didn't absolutely hate the movie from 1998 (and no matter what you think Gary Oldman was great).

Agreed! Why can't the company go back to old days where Walt himself came up with original ideas like Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio...etc! No more buying the rights to other people's characters or stories!

Ummm...P.L. Travers wrote Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh was written by A.A. Milne, and Pinocchio was written by Carlo Collodi.

Walt Disney was an AMAZING human being...no doubt about that. But even he never saw himself as more than a doodler. He was an idea man. He was also unbelievably adept at finding people with talent, giving them a "theme", and guiding them into helping him create greatness. He took stories that were in the public domain and created from them real-life stories that we can walk into and combined them into a theme park that ALL ages could enjoy together. He was a imaginative genius who was able to inspire those around him, but even he admitted that the actual "creating" part was best left to others.

Assuming they had the same good lawyers Universal Florida would have the Simpsons locked up as long as they used them.

They could have used the same good lawyers, but Fox wasn't a small player like Marvel at the time. Harry Potter theme park rights, for example, expire in 2029.

Really?

I can’t even because you think you’re right and nothing will change this. If you like Bob Iger’s vision for the company, an ever increasing collection of BRANDS, GM of the entertainment industry if you will, that’s fine. But it’s not Disney. Bob Iger’s vision for the company is impressive to business folks and fans who have bought into his version of “Disney”, but it’s shallow.

I don’t want a marginalized Disney that is dumbed down and shallow, as we see with the parks nowadays.

I want future generations to have the same relationship with Disney that I did when I grew up. Excellent storytelling, characters and art that grows up with you in a meaningful way.

Bob could give five sh-ts about that and this deal wouldn’t help the current situation either.

Your version of Disney would get swallowed up by a Verizon or an Amazon.

Future generationis will have a Disney experience different than yours. They probably will think theirs is better while you think your nostalgic one is better. One could argue they are getting excellent storytelling, characters, and art that grows with you in a meaningful way from Disney and its subsidiaries today.

The ship of the Disney you're imagining has long sailed.

I wonder if Disney would get involved in the Fox theme parks being built in Malaysia and Dubai and if they could or would want to replicate rides or a whole park somewhere in or near WDW as a new gate or in Hollywood Studios or elsewhere like in Paris or even somewhere new like in Texas or Missouri. The fact that there will apparently be a casino near the Malaysia park is also interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_Century_Fox_World

20th Century Fox World is an upcoming movie inspired theme park currently under construction in Genting Highlands (Resorts World Genting), Malaysia. The park will become the only functioning 20th Century Fox theme park in the world and the first in Asia upon its expected completion and opening in 2018 which may be delayed

Resorts World Genting has five hotels. One of the five hotels, the First World Hotel, holds the Guinness World Record as the largest hotel in the world from 2006 until 2008, and from 2015 onwards with a total of 7,351 rooms.[5]

Genting Grand Hotel (formerly as Genting Hotel)
Maxims Hotel (formerly known as Highlands Hotel)
Resort Hotel
Theme Park Hotel (the first hotel, formerly known as Highlands Hotel before Maxims)(closed on 1 September 2013 along with Genting Outdoor Theme Park. The hotel was reopened in August 2017)
First World Hotel (the largest hotel in the world until 2008, regained the title in 2015[6])

Currently, First World Plaza and indoor theme park have been closed until further notice due to renovation and refurbishment until further notice.

It consists of shops, restaurants, and exciting family indoor theme park, a cineplex, a Starworld casino, Bowling center, Genting International Convention Center, Haunted Adventure and a Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum. Entertainment-related performances such as dances, acrobatic shows and magical shows are held in an area called Times Square.

Unless of course, they want to keep those resorts 'FOX' and instead for the future grow FOX to be intertwined into the Disney brands, and not feel separate.

My guess for the film divisions:
  • Marvel Studios will come back together (finally!)
  • Touchstone will probably be reorganized into the FOX label (or that or they both get dropped entirely, and something new is made).
  • Major Franchises: Planet of The Apes, kingsman, Home Alone, Die Hard, Narnia, Simpsons, Avatar, Alien, Independence Day, the original Star Wars, (Perhaps Peanuts & Suess??)
  • Dozens (if not hundreds) of critically acclaimed films including box office hits like The Sound of Music, Titanic, The Martian, and the Revenant, Black Swan, Cast Away. Oh my goodness, there will be such a massive library.
  • Book series: The Maze Runner, The Life of Pi, Percy Jackson, The Book Thief, Night at The Museum, John Green stuff, (I don't know if these will be allowed to be used in a theme park instantly, but it is still a big deal to bring people onto a streaming platform, where loyal followers can be brought on).
  • FOX Searchlight (if it's included) is a BIG DEAL. A tremendous amount of indy talent can come from that to gain talent for Disney's larger arsenal. Connections, connections, connections! Easily the most underrated asset here.
  • Blue Sky is interesting. It's not really 'necessary', but besides Dreamworks, this is Disney's competition. Part of me says Peanuts should anchor this branch, and otherwise, it stays at the lower than Disney/Pixar budget frame, but as a whole it does not produce quality content, so it could see an overhaul or restructuring into the company. I do not see this becoming on par with Pixar or Disney though: it's a different level of film... it can (generally) survive on lower box office takes and critical acclaim. Rio & Ice Age have pretty much faltered out-- I wouldn't place investment in those.
  • Will BuenaVista & Fox merge as distribution? Or stay separate but equally useful? That's a huge deal as to how far they include the bigger franchises and the smaller films IMO.
  • All the classic films :D
  • Obviously much much more, but I think I am going to end this part of the post here, but it's pretty interesting stuff.
Broadcasting will be important... All of the original programming will be key to keep Disney going forward. My guess is when cable is close to 100% obsolete, Disney cuts them completely and on their streaming network will

I also really love the idea of Fox News & Sports not coming into this... those would hinder the future of Disney. I predict a competitor for Fox News, and Sports to continue to decline. Let them be short-term juggernauts for a smaller company.
Owning 20th Century FOX (minus News & Sports) is honestly a step in the right direction. Sure, Disney won't be 100% about Disney, but the opportunities to cater to every market is exactly what Disney needs to be adaptable to the market, and be actually one step ahead of Netflix. Disney will have essentially 100% of the new content, an insane amount of good movies, and an enormous amount of TV shows. Also, margins will be virtually 100% since Disney owns all of the shows. This is big. Actually, this is enormous.

I'd prefer Disney to focus mainly on Disney, but this pretty much makes sure that Disney won't be bought out in the unlikely event of it happening, which in my opinion is the greatest common factor here: securing the company's future without risking Anti-Trust violations. If Comcast and Amazon are fine, Disney will be far safer even with this.
This would be a game-changer, and as a stock owner, I want this! I want it done with good leadership that does not lose sight of the original company. The next CEO will be utterly important in crafting a vision for the future, especially if this goes through.

It doesn't seem to me that "Fox" branding for movies is that big a deal. No one that I know is excited to see "a Fox movie". Sure, Fox has had big hits, but also enough duds with movies and genres and targeted audiences all over the place that it really doesn't have its own style to market. On top of that, there is the rather definite style and branding of Fox News that Disney would want to get away from.

So, if this buy-out ever happens, it seems likely that the Fox branding for entertainment would go the way of RKO.

Disney definitely wants nothing to do with Fox News; it’s a news network and Disney already owns ABC and may own Sky, but Fox is obviously different. Sports: Anti-Trust issues and failing, so the movie & television studios are what Disney would be getting.

Fox definitely does not really do branding like Disney or Marvel. Fox’s films are all over the place in terms of success, but there are so many iconic, highly regarded films that Disney could really really use. Critically acclaimed films are what Disney needs on a streaming platform that caters to specific audiences and in turn all audiences. They have that somewhat with Touchstone with films like Good Morning Vietnam and Who Franed Roger Rabbit, but Fox would put Disney in another league.

I definitely think a restructuring would happen to 20th Century Fox if Disney bought them, but the name is still important as it is a completely different entity. Will Disney just keep the old Fox films how they are, or will a brand new company name prevail? To me, Bluesky & animated films like Anastasia will be the most interesting thing to be dealt with. What will be under the Disney name is the biggest thing, or will Disney semi-run them like competing companies. There’s a lot of interesting things they can do so if this happens, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

They could also do something similar to what they did for Guardians 2 - they kept it under the Marvel Studios name, but listed Disney Studios in the end credits. That seems like it would make a lot of sense for all the different studios Disney owns.

And they do that with Lucasfilms, but everyone knows that Disney owns them both. When you see Bluesky will that be treated as Disney’s third Animation studio? I feel like it will with a restructuring, but then you have Touchstone, and the rest of 20th Century Fox’s films... the question to me is what will they say for future Fox & Touchstone films, and what will it say before films like Titanic and Alien? Will they come together, and still be treated as a separate entity or will some of it shift to the Disney name. Planet of The Apes, and truly even alien could, but what happens to all those stand alone R films etc.

It’s interesting.

VERY interesting! I really hope the Fox purchase happens...it could be pretty great. I do think people are a bit more forgiving of the "Disney" name and understand that they don't just make family movies...heck, even my 11-year-old knows that.

EDIT: He knows that because he knows they own Marvel and that Deadpool is an adults-only movie. ;)

Deadpool is actually owned by Fox, not Disney. X-Men & Fantastic 4 are 20th Century Fox, Spider-Man is 50/50 Sony & Disney, and the rest are Disney's Marvel Studios (the main branch). But Disney has made plenty of R-rated films, which is perfectly fine, and more of a reason why Disney should buy 20th Century Fox.
Disney has already made plenty of r-rated films like Ruthless People & Good Morning Vietnam. Personally, I think Disney should release R-rated movies under their name as the MPAA is a stupid company that stifles creativity.
Disney should instead focus on canon Disney. Does Good Morning Vietnam fit the 'Disney name'? Not really, as with plenty of Touchstone PG films, but Alien, for instance, could actually work under the Disney name. And of course, Deadpool, once Disney owns it, would be great for Disney to market as Marvel, but I don't know if they'll bring that into the MCU.

The 6th Sense is another tremendous non-Disney canon... Disney-made film, so I wonder if having those types of films under the same name as, let's say, FOX would be a good idea, or something new. No need to have different studios when one larger studio or less separate studio could work better, but let's wait and see.

Yeah, I know about Deadpool and Fox...it's a shame the characters are divided up the way they are and hopefully this purchase goes through to straighten at least a big chunk of that all out. My husband is a huge Marvel Comics fan, so to us, Marvel is Marvel is Marvel, lol...it was just easy to explain how HUGE Disney is to my son by using that as an example. I find it interesting that all the movies with Marvel characters are released under the Marvel Studios banner and that the only way to really tell the difference in who made them is by watching and paying attention to all of the opening and end credits - I'm sure for the average viewer, it seems like they're all under one company/studio.

*If* I were in charge and the purchase went through, I would probably keep Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar separate, with two more divisions - a Disney studio for "family" films (not necessarily cartoons/animated, but it could include those that don't necessarily jive with Pixar), and another one for everything else.

There's another way: All the Marvel superhero movies that have no humor (excepting Deadpool) or are without any sense of joy or wonderment (excepting two Spider-Man films) were done outside the Disney umbrella.
