Typhoon Lagoon closing next week for refurbishment

I don't know anything, but based on the above comments, it sounds like the wave pool pumps might need to be serviced again. Seems like every few years they have to overhaul or replace these which requires them to bring in a crane and shut down that pool. That's the only thing that would make sense to me, but it could be anything really.

I noticed a few days ago there are tarps up at the top of the wave pool. It's the only thing I saw that looked like it needed work. Besides the rough scratchy bottom of the pool that causes bloody knees all day.

I was at Kona Cafe a couple weeks ago and overheard a father warn another set of parents to have their kids wear knee-guards for that same reason, cause he overheard that they were going to Typhoon Lagoon. That sounds pretty bad.

I was there two or three days ago. There was a problem with the waves not starting when they should. Either nothing or like a tiny little ripple.

But then they did start working and worked normally, for the most part (some delays, not many.)

I went and got a salad and was lying in the sun for a bit. When I went back in, the "bunches of smaller waves" thing was fine. I forget the actual name of that, but it worked.

People who aren't very familiar with Typhoon Lagoon would likely not have known there was any problem at all.

Everything else was typical Typhoon Lagoon. Well, I rarely go on water slides and didn't that day...but the lazy river was its usual self and there is nothing new about the wave pool having a textured surface on its floor.

Hey all, I just called Disney about (since I'm affiliated with a school group planning a visit to TL next weekend).

Officially, they are telling me closed the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th AND 17th...reopened on the 18th....

New & improved waves for us! We are planning a TL day on 5/24. If the refurb gets extended that far we'll pocket the $220 and maybe hit up City Walk. :D

News flash! Disney is installing a new Kardashian Wavemaster at Typhoon Lagoon!
Here's a pic of it in action:

Apologies if inappropriate, but that was just too good and timely to not post.

The bobbing waves are created by a regular wave machine mechanism like other parks' wave pools, which are large paddles moving back and forth in the water. The large waves are created by a system that acts like a large toilet. Large reservoirs behind the wall at the end of the pool fill up with water and then rapid valves are opened at the bottom allowing the water to rush into the pool underwater. While the bobbing waves don't require pumps, the large ones need pumps running to fill the reservoirs.

As for the rough wave pool bottom, a smooth surface would cause more injuries (or more severe injuries like head injuries or even drowning) when people can't get their footing on the smooth bottom and slip.
