Types of guests at Disney

As I'm listening to a coworker talk about his family's vacation to Disney and what a horrible experience it was. It was his first time to Disney, as a grown adult, and he says he'll never go back. Obviously, he is NOT a Disney fan!

I don't know if there's even an answer to it but I'm wondering all of us on this site (and other fan sites) are Disney fans but there are hundreds of thousands of people who are also visiting Disney. But who outnumbers who? Are there more Disney fans at Disney or is there more regular vacationers who do the obligatory trip to Disney?

Does this even make sense :p . I know what I want to say, just not sure it's coming across correclty...

I know as I'm watching SpectroMagic, I can't help but get all teary-eyed and I look around and I don't see anybody else crying so I must look like a fool to these non-Disney people

This would have just bothered me so bad to hear that.:brick: Who in their right mind could go to Disney and have an awful time for the whole trip? I mean I know that things can happen, but get over it and try to move on to better things. Did you talk to this guy to see what happened that was so bad to make him never want to go back?

To answer your question, the reason my family goes to Disney World is because we love everything about it. We love the resorts and all of the parks. This is the only place where I can escape to a whole new world and not think of the everyday demands of life. This is one place that we can all go together and experience so many different and interesting things. We have made so many great memories there and I hope to make many more!

I really don't know which segment outnumbers the other but I have seen many people that call Disney book a room and tickets and show up with the attitude of "OK, I am here now entertain me" They do no planning so they have little to no knowledge of how things work at WDW or the plethora of options that are in front of them. They wind up riding next to nothing, they never see any of the shows and wonder why they just cant walk up for breakfast at Cinderella's royal table in the middle of June. Of course this all becomes Disney's fault.

I often compare visiting WDW to visiting a foreign country. You would not book a hotel in Paris and expect everything to be laid out in front of you. You would do a little research find shows to go to, art galleries to visit, restaurants to eat at, etc. and plan your days around those activities. The same is true of WDW. If you just show up blind and expect the good time to come to you you are going to be disappointed.

hmm

I like the resorts and the parks but I encounter a lot of rude guest . Some who line jump and hold spots in lines and get extremely nasty to you when you bring it up.

I have had other guests who have ran into me and not say they are sorry.

So the people who will never come back are probably the people who have encountered a lot of nasty guests.

I dont know about this, I have been there for New years eve and still had a great time.

I think somebody is looking for a reason not to spend the money to go back. Also if you dont have fun at the World it is your own fault.

This is my opinion.

I have experienced for the most part the people who usually say they have had a bad experience at Disney are people who either A) say they are going to Disney, but really mean they are going on an Orlando trip which includes US, IOA, and SW as there disney trip and maybe even BG. So they bundle the disney with these other parks and we all know the difference. Then B) people might or might not do the same but also stay off property thinking they are getting the best deal and when they check in to Motel 6 or the Holiday INN they are like this kinda sucks type mode. Then the C)'s are people who think Disney is just MK and they do what I call the hustle trip get there on a SAT leave on SUN or MON and that same day they arrive do MK and then get fastrated with the amount of wait time and weather because most people are not used to our humidity and then fly or drive out the next day completly drained of all life force. That has ussually been my experience when people complain about there trip their.

We went with friends a few years ago, and all they did was complain the entire trip. It drove us nuts. They decided to go back this year for the week between Christmas and NYE. I planned out the week for them and made their ADR's at some pretty good restaurants, and they came home raving about the place. They can't wait to goback now!

I gotta agree. The only time I hear people say they didnt like Disney is when they try to do all the parks in just a couple short days or stay off property. It seems to me when people try to save money, they really end up spending more and getting less. And besides, if they didnt have fun at Disney they cant have fun anywhere.

I have a friend who hates rides and doesn't see any value in going to Disney. He lives in Miami and when DS and I were down in February '06, he suggested going to Cape Canaveral for the day instead. We went and enjoyed it, but when we got back to AKL for dinner, he was just amazed at the resort and the Savannas, and I explained that Disney is a lot more than just rides... He seemed interested in trying another time.

I've seen families that have entirely the wrong attitude to have any fun. I remember seeing a father dragging his screaming, clearly exhausted kids through MGM hollering that he'd paid damn good money for this vacation and his kids weren't going to ruin it! I'd bet he complained that he hated Disney and it was too expensive when he got home... It couldn't have been his fault! :brick:

But there are people who find it's too much money and no matter what they get, they don't see it as worth it. I don't get it, for me it's more than worth the cost, but to each their own.

This has nothing to do with Disney! Just Kidding, very good point!

It didn't frustrate me but I crinkled up my forehead, cocked my head to one side and said 'Really?!" In disbelief that someone out there doesn't like WDW! He said he went over Thanksgiving, it was also when all the people scheduled to go during 9/11 were rescheduled to go during this same week. He said the crowds were HUGE! I said, that's your problem... try again when it's not so chaotic and I bet you'll have a much better time. That didn't satisfy him, he then went on to complain about the cost of Disney. No matter what I said, he was going to find something to complain about.

Now this is an EXCELLENT point well made. I have met people like this who turn up totally unprepared, end up doing very little, then wonder why everyone raves about WDW and have the nerve to blame others or Disney for their lack of a good time. It annoys me especially when I think of the other families who would cherish and make the absolute most of a single visit, yet cannot afford to go.

At the end of the day, people like these are themselves responsible for 'wasting' their own money, and if they don't intend to ever re-visit, maybe Walt Disney World is better off without them.

I understand completely what you are saying. A couple years ago I went with my sister and her family. 7 of us in total. 6 had a great time and 1 was miserable. He did not go on any of the rides, attractions, inteact with characters, etc. He was there because his family was. He would rather of been at home. I am traveling with this same group this Christmas. And yes - he is staying home and just the girls are traveling. I just think Disney is not his choice for a vacation.

I don't think it's a guestion of being a fan of Disney. I think all kinds of people go to WDW. But how could anyone who goes to WDW not instantly become a fan after visiting just once. I'm a grumpy old man & even I fell in love with the place. (Everytime I see someone wearing a T shirt with Grumpy on it I say " Grumpy, My Man!")
I wonder if there was something in particular that upset your co-worker.If it was dealing with rude people, that's a shame he couldn't let it roll off his back & enjoy himself. Granted, that's easier said then done. But there's so many wonderful things at Disney that should help him get over those unfortunate situations with rude people.
Also, perhaps he did not have a daily plan. It's hard to do everything at Disney. It's even harder to things at Disney without some kind of itinerary. And being able to adapt the plans.
Then again ,maybe he just likes to complain. Introduce him to Grumpy

he then went on to complain about the cost of Disney.

This is a real problem here! Yes Disney does cost a good penny but when you weigh what you get to your other vacations, Disney surpasses them all and with good planning and discounts :sohappy: you can even go for less!

I think that it is true that you do need to have a plan before you go. Our last few trips have been much more fun because the children have also gotten involved with the planning and they do their own research. They have fun doing this and it really does help. I have learned so much from just being on here and reading books about Disney.

I can remember the first time that we went without planning anything and we were kind of overwhelmed the first day. We did much better after seeing what was all there and what we had to do to see everything.

I think it has a lot to do with attitude as well. There are people out there that you just can't please no matter what. I sure wouldn't want to go to Disney with someone like this. I would end up leaving them and having fun without them!

I gotta tell ya for the most part we have a great time despite the heat and humidity of july. But, some of the people are terrible. One thing last season I noticed alot more single 20-30 something year old men in Epcot totally drunk by 9pm. We ate at the Biergarten in germany and were seated with three 20something year olds who really mistreated the waiter. I hope this is not going to recur as I like to think of WDW as FAMILY oriented.
