As a Leica shooter, I wanted to like the A7/A7R - but the A7 is a complete non-starter and the A7R isn't looking much better... At least for use with M lenses.

Well, another Leica shooter; Steve Huff would disagree with you...

"I really enjoyed the A7 and A7r cameras. At launch I was insanely excited about them because there is simply nothing else like them at this price point, and even my beloved Leica M..well, the A7 and A7r surpass it in overall IQ. While they do not offer the same build, feel or joy of use as my Leica M, they can compete and surpass in overall IQ, and do. At a fraction of the cost as well."

...

"At the end of the day, if you want a fantastic full frame camera that is at the top of the heap in the IQ department, one that is smaller than all of the bulky SLRs and one that is much less expensive than the Leica M, take a long hard look at the Sony A7 or A7r. If you want to shoot Leica M glass or even Nikon or Canon glass..you can. If you have a stash of Sony Alpha DSLR glass, you can also shoot with that (with adapters of course). So the name of the game with the Sony’s are VALUE. You get a lot of BANG for your BUCK, especially with the A7.

These are an EASY recommendation and if you are out there trying to decide which model to go for, I can not see anyone being unhappy with the A7 over the A7r. At under $1700 for the A7, it is a steal for what you are getting. The 1st lens I would get is the Sony/Zeiss 35 2.8. It has a gorgeous rendering that reminds me of the highest quality Zeiss lenses of the past.

I love what Sony is doing and I can only imagine that in a year or two these cameras will get even better, faster and slicker. I am happy to support a company that just “gets it” when it comes to what we want in a camera. Go Sony GO!"

and it's pretty fair. He points out many of the camera's flaws. Personally, I will stick with my NEX-7 for now. I've only had it for a year and still enjoying the great results from such a small size. I think 2014 and 2015 are going to bring some great new things in the camera market and for now I'm willing to wait for them. I'd love to pick up an A7 tomorrow but I think the success of these camera is going to lead to amazing stuff - and not only from Sony.

Passing on it myself... lenses aren't there.

Steve Huff is a tool and a Sony fanboi. He'll dote and blather on about the latest and greatest of anything. Him and Rockwell are perfectly suited for each other.

Lol! I guess it depends on your perspective - The mob on the Sony boards are calling him a Leica shill.

Hey - whatever your comfortable with ( and can afford ) is cool with me.

He's a shill for anything he can promote on his site (which is pretty much everything). He gave up the Leica-only angle after the Leica and Seal love triangle imploded. ;)

Of course, use whatever works. :)

yeah but one brand doesn't have to constantly rebuild itself... Leica is Leica, they've deviated a little with their digital systems but they don't need anyone to pimp their gear out. While I respect Sony for this massive development they're constantly cranking out new models with new gadgets and need this type of hype to help distinguish themselves amongst the muddied digital world of Nik-Can-Ony Products.

Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying these two Sony bodies stink, just that for my intended purpose (use with Leica M lenses) they're a dead end. If I didn't have lenses for various platforms already and intended to buy the (all-new) FE lenses it might be a different story.

What is it with every new camera coming with new, dedicated lenses anyway? The whole appeal of m4/3 was supposed to be interchangeable lenses bound by the mount. Instead, every manufacturer uses sensors of different sizes and wants to sell you a new range of glass. Ugh. I already have lenses that'll last me a lifetime or several.
