Just browsing The World on Google Maps (as you do ... work ... yeh in a minute!) And i noticed that in the middle of the car park for the TTTC there is a great big massive round wooded/green area - why is this? anyone know why they choose to leave it there and not just build the car park on it? Seems a bit of an odd idea, I am all for greenery, but this just seems like they left it for a reason, as it serves no purpose really?

Pretty sure it's for drainage....otherwise the parking lot would become one giant lake after the inevitable summertime afternoon deluges.

My guess would be that the trees are used as a landmark to seperate the parking lots from each other, Villains/Hero. Plus drainage from all the parking lot to help absorb the water.

Could be, but then they also have lines of trees in between purpose built anyway which could be used for drainage / seperating, plus if you are building a car park surely you build in drainage, just seems a bit weird.

The parking lot is on a flood plain anyway and with the water table as high as it is in Florida, you need a lot of open space for every square yard of pavement.

@Tom @Master Yoda ...a little help here?

I wonder why they built it at that weird jaunty angle then, you would think if you had to plan it you would make it all a bit more uniform (like the straight lines of trees that split each section up) and stick trees in at various places to help with that, I guess whoever planned it knows a bit more about planning than I do though, lol.

Is EPCOT CP on a flood plain too, as this doesn't have a weird grass/tree area in the middle of it, just the straight line tree splitter things, I know its not quite as big as TTTC, but its not far off really ...

On the RCID master plan that area is designated as Marginally Suitable for construction:

"Marginally Suitable – Areas given a marginally suitable rating have identified or recognized constraints for
development. This classification corresponds to wetlands that are above the 100-year flood elevation.
Development in these areas is strongly discouraged and would require mitigation of wetland impacts above
and beyond what is prescribed in the District’s Long Term Permits

I had heard that the large round area of trees in the MK parking lot was where a sinkhole occurred either during construction or some time before and it was chosen just to leave it. No idea as to the truth of it but it would make sense as it's rather irregularly and oddly placed.

Sinkhole makes sense.

This would actually make sense based on what the RCID master plans say. There are other areas on property where there are islands of unsuitable or marginally suitable land inside areas of suitable land.

the parking lot floods and flood badly during the summer rains. It can easily reach 3 inches in a matter of minutes. It all drainage as well as the canals between each lot.

Yes, this....

I just thought they were there to be pretty.

Must google 100 year flood.

....one-hundred-year flood event ...is one that's got a 1% probability of happening / occurring in any given year.

....it's sometimes also referred to as a 1% flood event, since its annual exceedance probability is 1%, or as having a return period of 100-years.

.....but ...it doesn't mean that IT CAN'T occur more than once in that year period.

.....in the area I predominately work (NYC) ...I design drainage systems for a 10 year storm / rainfall event. And in one freak year, we had two storms that were of an intensity of between 50 and 100 years. Water was blowing up thru the storm manholes in a parking lot of a store I was doing. Owner went nuts ...and was going to file a suit against us ...but he couldn't because everything was designed to the standards of the municipality.

....sometimes ....floods happen.
