TSA Carry on question

I don't fly much and I didn't see this listed on the TSA website ..... I would think these would be ok as carry on, but I will pose the question here to find out for sure ...... Can you bring small umbrellas in your carry on bags? If it looks like there is a chance of rain the day we fly down, I would like to have an umbrella with me and not in my luggage. Only 12 more days, Can't Wait!!!:p

It's not prohibited (unless it's one of those James Bond spy kind where the handle conceals a blade, of course) ;), but I'd make sure that when you pack it it's packed nice and neatly, perhaps along one edge of the bag. If your carryon's contents are all jumbled around, it's possible it could look odd on the x-ray screen and they'd have to do a hand inspection. It would pass just fine, but why go through the inconvenience?

This is more friendly advice than an answer to your question.

Ponchos.

Florida rainfall is rarely a drizzle, and a little umbrella - one you can bring in carry-on - is still going to get 75% of your body soaking wet. Plus, if you're dealing with any extra bags, or extra people (don't know if you have kids), AND an umbrella? You're going to look like a recreation of an old Buster Keaton film. Pack a poncho, and maybe some big garbage bags to cover any carryon with stuff susceptible to water damage. Wear your umbrella, keep your hands free for all your other stuff.

I will second that -- as an ex-New Yorker and now Great Lakes guy, we are used to using Umbrellas.

An umbrella is USELESS at Walt Disney World -- water sprays from every direction, not just straight down like here up north...

Either pack some ponchos (cheap at Wal-mart and the like) or buy them at the park (or your resort commissary)...

Baseball caps also come in handy on rainy days for those who wear glasses -- the poncho hood fits over the hat, and the hat keeps some of the rain out of your face...The best bet for eyeglass wearers, though, it put a hardcase in your pocket to take your glasses off and keep them dry.

But don't bother with the umbrellas. They will do next to nothing to keep you dry, and all you will do is drop water all over everyone else...

Yes. You can even bring the large golf umbrellas with you if you so desire. They are not prohibited. Umbrellas do not need to be packed.

Another Poncho>umbrella here. Bought ours in 1998 in MK and have brought them (and used them) every trip since (+5 times). Let them dry overnight in your room, fold carefully, and place them again in the single clear freezer bag we use to store them in. Bring the bag in the park and when the rain starts (and it will), you are ready. Easy to pack, carry, and use. Agree with other prior posts about freeing your hands and overall coverage.

I prefer an umbrella over a poncho in light-to-moderate rain.
It might just be me, but I find that the ponchos get VERY warm and humid inside... I'd rather be comfortable and slightly damp than hot and humid under a poncho.

And I'll toss in my rant about the black Mickey umbrellas they sell in the shops... I bought one years ago, and it was my favorite umbrella. It was the perfect size and weight. Then one day a co-worker borrowed it from the break room (without asking) and broke the pop-up release button.

On my next trip I bought a replacement, but was displeased to discover that the design had been altered, most likely in a cost-cutting move. :fork:
The handle is shorter, which makes you have to hold your arm higher, in an awkward position/height, to hold the open umbrella above your head.

And the material is lighter-weight fabric. The old one had thicker fabric that didn't let any rain through. The new fabric is thinner, like those super-compact umbrellas, and it's like it only strains the rain a bit. You get misted through the umbrella.

I have 2 things:

1) I always go with a rain jacket/umbrella combo because I hate ponchos. Yes, I get a bit wet if it's a summer storm, but your legs and feet get wet in a poncho too. At least It's not 130 degrees in my jacket.

2) To answer your question, umbrellas are allowed in carry ons, but be sure to take it out of the bag. All the metal intertwined looks really weird on the machine and you will get searched. I've had it happen twice.

I had a poncho and umbrella in my carry on last time because I was going straight to parks. Didn't have a problem:wave:

Ponchos

Hello. We always go to our local Dollar store and but several rain ponchos. They are a 2 pack for $1. We always keep a pack with us daily in the event of a quick shower or wet ride like splash mountain. If the forcast calls for more steady rain then a larger vinyl poncho cover a lot more, u can get them at walmart in the camping section for about $5-6, but they r heavy to carry around everyday. All the parks get out the nice vinyl ponchos when it rains, i'm not sure what the price is now, maybe around $7. Heck for $5 at the Dollar store u can have 10 ponchos and just throw em away when ur done with em. MikeB

TSA is very inconsistent. I've always left the umbrella in my bag and haven't been searched. But either way, you can bring any size umbrella with you on a plan. They are not prohibited.

Invest in a good light-weight rain jacket. If you don't want to spend much, take a look in your local thrift store. Our thrift store (run by Lupis) sells good quality rain jackets in like new condition for about $10. A light-weight jacket will roll up and take little space. It is amazing what people donate nowdays. Much better than roasting in a plastic poncho.

Another use for poncho/raincoat

We have always packed raincoat/ponchos from walgreens/walmart-(well, mom here does) and then I use mine also on Kali River Rapids to protect myself from the water, and another helpful hint, bring a couple of the small garbage bags-(mini size) also from walmart/walgreens.
These are great to pack wet shoes, socks in or in my case to wrap my feet on Kali River Rapids.

Yes, I am the driest one on that ride--and the husband and 2 sons do nothing but laugh at me--but then again, Daddy got quite soaked a couple of years ago--and boy were they happy I packed in my tote an extra tshirt and socks.
(another helpful hint for the day at the park-if weather is questionable)

Leave the umbrella at home---you'll need the extra room in your carry on returning home for the souven. :D
Ponchos/Raincoats can be tossed away if needed at the end of the stay.
