Tropical Storm ERIKA to bring possible severe weather to Central Florida early next week

That wont happen. The Last time WDW was closed for more than one day was 2004 with Jeanne (@wdwmagic will have to double check this of course) when that storm took 3 days to work its way across teh state at a nasty 3 MPH. Just stood there and spun like a top. Lots of rain, decent wind.

Actually, i think you'll end up having a great time. You'll have one, maybe two of rain and then you'll have a great story and likely some emptier parks.

Yeah, Charley was actually not that long. They shut the parks at "noonish", rain started that afternoon, it was bad overnight, and clear in the AM. So they closed for 1/2 a day and had a delayed opening the next day. If you went to the parks on the 1/2 day, they were giving out one full day return ticket good for a year or so.

I posted my Charley video earlier in this thread..... I filmed it and was there.

Correct. And the eye hasn't hit there yet, so we don't know if it will go over the mountains or just to the north of the mountains etc.

And then it looks like it will parallel Cuba, giving it plenty of time to strengthen or not. The point is none of us know, and so I take exception to people making statements with apparent certainty.

Doesnt even have much of a defined eye; storm looks pretty disorganized. Might change, might not. Still could do anything.

Track keeps taking it further west, which is weird. Its gonna turn north at some point.

I remember; was just trying to reiterate to the other person that it wouldn't be that bad. Heck, I haven't converted it from VHS, but I have a video taken at the Wilderness Lodge during Charley. Those balconies created a pretty good spot to film from during the storm! And yes, they do put the pool furniture in the pool before the storm to stop it from becoming projectiles.

I've watched that many times and thought. "That looks like fun".

It's really not. The absolute worst is trying to walk a dog in the middle of a tropical storm or hurricane. Why? Because the dog wants to sniff everything and doesn't want to… Do his business. Meanwhile you're getting soaked and nailed with winds.

And then you have to deal with the soaking wet dog

On the Francis video that I never bothered to edit and don't even know where it is now… You had idiots in the pool during all the rain bands until Security physically blocked off the pool

We were in the middle of walking down to go rent a boat on the first day (3 foot waves on bay lake) but that first ring band hit before we got there and they closed recreation for three days.

Great video by PhotoDave 219. My wife and I were there at the same time. We enjoyed the experience. It was amazing how accurate the minute by minute news reporting was. We really found it interesting watching the cast batten down the hatches at the parks. They lashed the swinging signs down and removed all the trash receptacles. We were able to stay in the parks until I believe about 3pm. Disney never lost electrical power at our resort. I remember I was concerned with the possibility of no TV and a very hot humid room. That turned out to be of no concern. Of course we were just visitors to Florida with no property to worry about but we were hoping all would be well outside of the world.
We stayed at the POFQ so when we got back to our resort it was wall to wall people and the food court was wiped out. All of the campsite people were evacuated to our resort for safety sake due to the proximity of POFQ to the camp grounds.
Never saw so may RVs and campers in the parking lots. They were handing out flashlights just in case but ran out of them. We were eventually able to get some pre packaged peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to eat. Next day we went out to survey the damage. A lot of downed trees but not much more. The boat to DTD was stopped for several days due to high water levels and floating debris . The parks slowly opened I believe the next afternoon. We went to Hollywood studios. I remember the NBC Commissary was closed because the gas was turned off. Several days later the campsite folks left. All in all it was kind of exciting and interesting.Disney took excellent care of everyone and we never hesitate or change Disney plans due to hurricane forecasts.

Which of course puts WDW on the east side of the storm, the side that gets hammered the worst if memory serves (we haven't had a hurricane land in the state for 10 years, so memory is fading).

Correct. It's just an If.

But once it turns north, it should be swept northeast pretty fast. This will be a very quick thing.

It's going to be an interesting couple of hours… The song keeps trending further and further west which leads me to believe it may do the same thing Charlie did which is cut across Cuba and then go north east over Florida.

Or it may start carving north over the Dominican Republic, hit those 10,000 foot mountains and completely fall apart…

As I seem to recall from Charley, that storm stayed south of Cuba before crossing its western end and heading up into the Gulf and made landfall somewhere south of Tampa?? We caught the back-end of the storm up on Long Island if I remember correctly.

Correct. Landfall at port Charlotte and traveled northeast rapidly.

looks like we may get it, do like a good TS..
im on the 3rd floor of my condo so i usually ride em out

I'm the same way, I actually like a TS. Hurricane's not so much, but a TS, most of the time cools it down enough to save me money on my A/C without causing any real damage to my property. Won't mind it at all if it follows the current path, although, it seems to be moving more and more west.

I am so looking forward to Monday morning, sarcasm off
The current track has it running right over my house sometime Monday morning after 8am. Hopefully it will be quick moving
And landfall looks more like south of Naples now

It would be fun to see Operations execute their hurricane management plans.

Looks like that may happen. The forecast keeps shifting farther and farther west and is falling apart.

From the National Hurricane Center's 5PM Discussion:
  • Although this would normally be an appropriate time for a tropical storm watch for portions of southern Florida, following typical
timelines, we have elected to wait until we see what's left of Erika after it passes Hispaniola. There is a significant chance
that no watches or warnings for Florida will be required.

Yep. Forecast to be a Cat 1 by the time it hits. Naturally, there will already be rain bands over Central Florida before it makes landfall. If it travels over the state, it could be a T.S. again.

No longer forecast to be a Cat 1. Forecast has it shifting west hitting as a TS south of Tampa and traveling through the center of Florida as a TD. See the live map from WDWMagic in post #1
