Tropical Storm ERIKA to bring possible severe weather to Central Florida early next week

While I, like most on this board, am concerned about Walt Disney World CMs and guests as the hurricane approaches, I also think about the folks in Puerto Rico and the other islands directly in its sights right now. The news said this moring that there have already been a number of deaths (four, I think) and a bigger number (20, I think) missing there.

Anyway, I know that this is a WDW board, but I thought you all might want to know about the folks so far affected.

At least the news seems to think the mountainous terrain there will help minimize it and keep its winds down as it progresses across the seas toward the mainland. This should minimize damage considering the situation, for most of the mainland, including WDW. And ultimately help some with drought that some areas (including Puerto Rico) have.

But for now, I believe that they could still use our thoughts and prayers.

I will be leaving for my honeymoon on Monday the 31st from Philadelphia at 8am, and staying until Wednesday September 9th. My husband and I have never been to Florida so we are not too familiar with the weather/weather protocols, or almost anything Florida/Disney related. I see that Disney has a Hurricane refund policy. Do you think it would be worth our time to reschedule the trip? We certainly do not mind standing in the rain or getting wet. We're not particularly pool or beach people. But I don't want to be stuck in a hotel room for 10 days either. Looking for any tips/info/advice you are willing to give. Thanks!

The forecast is currently looking like a tropical storm, so expect considerable rainfall on Monday and Tuesday, but certainly not 10 days stuck in a hotel room. We should know more by Saturday as to exactly what the impact will be.

The probability of you getting stuck in a hotel room for 10 days is as close to zero as statistically possible.

The worst case scenario is the parks might be closed for a day.

The more likely outcome is a solid day or two of hard rain.

Yep, but by the time it gets to the US, it will be a shell of what it currently is.

Also keep in mind that the Caribbean's infrastructure can't handle these types of storms.

That is not necessarily true at all – it depends on the path it takes. I've lived in South Florida for nearly 20 years. Once it passes the islands and is over open water on the way to Florida, that is when it strengthens. Unless it goes just the right way over the islands, and they tear it up.

Regardless, "a little bit of rain" can't do that.
True, but it is going to be no were near the same intensity when it makes landfall in south Florida...an area well prepared to deal with a hurricane.

Sure, you will have local news crews reporting on every downed tree limb and acting like the world is coming to an end, but it will be nothing like what we see in the Caribbean.

I to lived in South Florida for 20 years but the fact of the matter is yes, we still don't know the exact track but it will NOT be a hurricane by the time it gets broken up over the islands. There will be minor flooding in some low lying areas but other than that, this is not much of a storm.

To get back on topic, I stress that everyone who is going WDW next week make the best of whats around and bring those ponchos!

You mean "if" it gets broken over the islands. Unless you're a psychic now.

Umm.... Stuck in room for 10 days, on honeymoon, what could one possibly do to pass the time?????

I do believe the hurricane policy is only active when the NHC certifies hurricane status. Tropical storms do not apply.

Congratulations. Go on your trip. With the rain coming the parks will have a lighter crowd level. Plenty to do inside at the parks plan on a day or two of just doing inside shows and attractions.

That wont happen. The Last time WDW was closed for more than one day was 2004 with Jeanne (@wdwmagic will have to double check this of course) when that storm took 3 days to work its way across teh state at a nasty 3 MPH. Just stood there and spun like a top. Lots of rain, decent wind.

Actually, i think you'll end up having a great time. You'll have one, maybe two of rain and then you'll have a great story and likely some emptier parks.

Historically speaking, the mountains between Haiti/Dominican Republic really mess up tropical systems and weaken them for the moment.

Correct. And the eye hasn't hit there yet, so we don't know if it will go over the mountains or just to the north of the mountains etc.

And then it looks like it will parallel Cuba, giving it plenty of time to strengthen or not. The point is none of us know, and so I take exception to people making statements with apparent certainty.
