Trip Report Oct. 2-7

Hi everyone,

I had so much fun reading all the trip reports here before my vacation, I though it would be only fair to post one of my own.

This was my first trip back to Disney World since I went for the first time 15 years ago, so I was a little excited about this vacation! It all began 9 months ago when I suddenly had an urge to find information on the internet about my favorite ride, which I discovered was called Horizons, and as you all have known for a long time, is no longer in existence.

Well, I was sad to discover Horizons was gone, but looking for info on it reminded of all the great things that were still in WDW, and how much I wanted to go back. So I set out on an obsessive mission to convince someone, anyone I knew, that they wanted to go to Disney World with me.

Well I won't bore you with the details, but after many shamelessly salesman like gimmicks on my part I managed to convince my best friend, who had never been to WDW, that she just had to go. So finally after a lot of hard work planning, making reservations, and finding the best prices and deals I got my trip! Here it goes....

Day 1: Wed. October 2nd, 2002 Part 1

My friend and I arrived at the Coronado Springs at about 11:00 in the morning. I absolutely fell in love with this resort from the moment we arrived, everything was beautiful!

We had been up since 3:00am, and my friend was very, very sick (we almost had to stay home  ) so we were really happy to discover that our room was ready. Ten minutes later, after a rather adventurous ride, our driver pretended to almost drive into the pool (thank god the brakes were working:eek: ), we were in our room.

We stayed in the Ranchos section right by the quiet pool and it was just lovely, the themeing and landscaping were perfect. Our room as well was very nice, I personally love the southwest and Mexico so this was the resort for me!

My friend really needed a nap so we canceled our plans to go to Blizzard Beach and she got a few hours of sleep. The rest of the day I spent wandering around the resort, taking pictures, which are always my favorite souvenirs, and laying in the hammocks on the beach.

Day 1 Part 2

I know that Coronado Springs is not many peoples favorite resort but I really thought they had done a beautiful job with it, especially as a moderate resort.

There are several things I really enjoyed:

The wonderful fountain in the lobby area with the artwork on the dome above, it was so quiet and peaceful in there.

I actually really enjoyed Pepper Market (the food court) as well. We have something called Marche Marche at home which is the same exact concept as PM, get your food at stations and pay at the end. I really enjoy eating at the one at home so I was probably predisposed to enjoy PM.

Everything about the landscaping, all the fountains and palms in the Casitas, the Caribbean feel to the Cabanas (can't beat hammocks on a white sand beach) and the great Cacti and rock formations in the Ranchos. I love that there were Palm Trees everywhere too, this is Florida afterall!

And of course the huge main pool with the Maya pyramid was fabulous.

I hope to post a few pictures eventually since I took more than I probably needed too :)

Day 1 Part 2:

Finally in the evening my friend was feeling much better so we were at least able to keep our dinner PS at Jinko in the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Everything about Animal Kingdom Lodge is amazing! You really felt like you could be out in the middle of the African Savannah, with the tall grass and the beautiful architecture of the building. When I have a lot more money than I do now, I would love to stay there!

We arrived and spent a few minutes looking around with our jaws hanging down. I annoyed a few people by pulling out my tripod to take a few pictures ( I wasn't blocking traffic, I swear! and it was really dark inside). Then it was time for Jinko.

We were on the Discovery Magic plan (which I have decided I would not do again, more on that later) so I was looking forward to a lot of good food and I was not disappointed. The restaurant was beautiful, dark wood, the glow of blue and yellow lights and a wonderful flock of fabric birds fading into the distance as they flew off across the room.

The food was excellent too, I had the marinated ahi tuna, the steamed bass with Chaka Laka sauce (that's just fun to say:D ) and finally the best part, a wonderful sampling of chocolate desserts. A chocolate creme brulee, a white chocolate mousse, made with a fruit that our waiter said the monkeys are especially found of (what does that say about me :)) and some excellent chocolate biscotti. Even the bread was great! A fabulous dinner, I highly recommed Jinko, it was great fun!

We finished off our evening by taking a brief walk around the grounds of AKL, checking out the pool which of course looked like great fun! Then it was off to our own hotel and time for much needed sleep.

Okay now I need a break, this went on forever:), I will post part two later today or tomorrow at the latest. Please tell me if this is too much detail, I just start writing and its like being on trip again! Hope you all have a great day!

I am loving this trip report for 2 big reasons: I love Coronado Springs, and in 28 days I'll be going to WDW to stay this time at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, with Dinner scheduled at Jiko on our first night. I can hardly wait.
About Coronado...things I loved - main pool, BIG hot tub, poolside bar with great snacks, the great (and reasonably priced for WDW) breakfast buffet in their full service restaurant.
As for the Peppermarket, we avoided it after 1 bad experience: we went there and after struggling to get people to wait on us, we got our food, only to discover that no one had stamped our card. It's hard to really understand how it works when the people working there don't get it either. But anyone can have an off night.
Can't wait to read more. You must have been amazed at the changes since 1988. When we didn't go for 4 years between 93-97, I couldn't believe all the changes! Thanks for the great storytelling.

Thanks everyone! I am really having great time writing this, so I glad you like reading it!

Good catch, Fantasia Boi :), I don't know why but from the begining of my trip planning I've been calling it Jinko!

I'm so glad to hear others like the Coronado Springs, I thought it was so much fun!

Day 2: Part 1

We woke up at about 8:00 to Mickey's voice, Yahh!!! We put it on speaker phone so we could both hear, I was sooooo excited this really meant I was in Disney World!! My friend was feeling much better, so we were soon on our way to catch a bus to our first park, Animal Kingdom. Our plan for the day was to stay at AK until our 2:00 PS at the Rainforest Cafe, and then we would head over to MGM for a few hours before catching Fantasmic at 8:00.

Well we arrived at Animal Kingdom a little after the 9:00 opening. One of the first things we saw was the talking palm tree. I don't know if any of you has seen this, but it is absolutely hysterical. We both agree we could have watched it all day.

The talking palm tree (whose voice sounded like lambchop's) is in this planter with wheels and there is obviously someone watching from afar to see who it was interacting with. Every time someone would come near, it would comment on something specific to them.

A little boy came up to it holding his little sister's hand and the palm said, "your wife is very cute but isn't she a little young?", "I mean I've heard of robbing the cradle but this is ridiculous". Then he asked this little girl with red hair if she was a "redwood", because her roots were "red". The cutest on of all though was when he started asking this little girl named Janice if she would give him a hug, finally after much coaxing she did, and when she stepped away the palm stated spinning and chanting, "Janice is my girlfriend, Janice is my girlfriend. " She thought it was so funny. It was a great way to start our day!

Finally we made it into the park!

Day 2 Part 2:

We both really liked Animal Kingdom, of course we are both environmental educators, so it didn't take much. The crowds were perfect, I had preplanned where we should begin so that we could miss some of the lines, but there really was no problem at all.

After a quick exploration of the wonderfully twisting trails of the Oasis and all the animals they hide ( I really got a kick out of those large white birds that are everywhere at WDW, we deemed them the pigeons of Florida), we headed to the back of the park to catch the Kilmanjaro Safaris.

What a wonderful ride, the Savannah was beautiful and there were lots of animals up and active. We saw the elephants (lots), hippos, lions, several antlered species, and a rhino who was almost close enough to touch. It was a beautiful sunny day and you could almost pretend you were in Africa.

After the Safaris we spent a little time exploring the Pangani Forest Trail. There are so many great animals there too. I particularly liked the Tapir, Gorillas and all the birds in the aviary. There was one very inconspicuous little black bird with this amazing bright green beak. He was so cute! I loved the themeing along the trial as well, very tropical and lush. After our walk through we spent a little time looking through the shops. So little money so much to buy :( !

Next we walked to Asia. On the way we stopped for a photo with Balou and to watch the amazing vine covered stilt person. I'm not sure what else to call them. This person was completely covered with leaves and moved very slowly on stilts, even their arms were on stilts. If you didn't see them move you might have thought they were landscaping.

Once we got to Asia we made a beeline for the Kali Rapids. The themeing on the path to this ride is truly wonderful, the statues and temples, and my absolute favorite part the rooster living in the porch of the last building before you head down to the ride. I almost wished there had been a line so that I could look around more. Almost. As it was we walked right on.

I had been a little worried about this ride as I am very susceptible to motion sickness but as I am sure you all know, it was so not a problem. The ride was so much fun and we got soaked! We immediately went on it again :D .

Then it was time for a snake of fries and off to the Jungle Trail to cool off. I really, really liked the themeing along the jungle trail, all the abandoned temples and hanging prayer flags and lanterns. I especially like the bat house, there were bats everywhere!

After the trail we did a little shopping to dry off before "Its Tough to be A Bug". I actually found this great plush Eeyore book (he's my favorite) to be my autograph book, so I was very happy.

" Tough to be a Bug" was really a great show, despite the fact that without my glasses I was unable to see 3-D very well. I still enjoyed the humor and effects and I loved the posters in the waiting area with the show titles changed to include bug references. As my friend commented, "Disney really knows how to make everything come together."

After the show we headed straight for the Rainforest Cafe and our 2:00 PS. 2:00! Ahhhh:eek: ! Where did the time go, this was our first moment of time pressure as we realized there was no way we were making it to MGM this afternoon.

We still managed to enjoy our lunch though, the restaurant was great, I loved that there was a thunderstorm every twenty minutes and monkey swinging from the ceiling. The food was not the best I had ever had but I think I had been spoiled by Jiko the night before. I have one piece of advice though, if you go and order the Volcano (a dessert which induces a loud chorus of "Volcanoooo" from the CMs) make sure you have some nice people to share it with. It is huge! My friend and couldn't even begin to finish it especially having just eaten a huge lunch.

On another note I would like to thank the CM who brought us an extra decoration for the top of our dessert since we were sharing, they are not supposed to do that, so she had to sneek us one:lookaroun . We really did turn into big kids while we were there!

After lunch we went on to see the "Festival of the Lion King". Very fun show! In the beginning I was a little wary, we walked into this empty pavilion with bleachers, but then the magic of Disney took over and there were all these wonderful performers. I loved that the kids got to get involved in the dancing too.

Our final stop in AK was Dinoland and Dinosaur, another really fun ride. One of the things I love most about Disney is that everything adds to the ride experience, the building the ride is in, the preshows and loading areas. There are always silly stories behind everything!

We had a wonderful day a AK and although we didn't stick to the schedule, we got to see everything we had wanted to and we didn't need a FP once. Our ride home was great too, we were thoroughly entertained by this little boy who kept demonstrating his strength to us by crushing M&M's with his fingers. He was so cute! I will post more soon, this was all my poor fingers could take!

Amazing job so far!!!! I Am glad you liked AK. I kinda do also, but it seems lost on a lot of people. I have never seen the talking palm tree, but there is a talking trash can in the Magic Kingdom called Push. He and I had a nice conversation the last time I was there. He sang me Happy Birthday and everything. I kissed the top of his head (can?) and he started saying "I have a girlfriend!! " Really loud!! It was so funny!! Do continue on tough!! I Am so enjoying yur report!! Belle
