Trip Report....Don't Laugh!

WDW Trip Report

We just returned form our trip to WDW. We were there form 2/8/2005 until 2/13/2005 and had a wonderful time. We had reservations for the AKL but at the last minute, my wife decided she wanted to stay at All-Star Sports. She reasoned that during our last trip, we had stayed at the AKL and that we hadn't visited the All-Star Sports since it first opened back in 1994. I didn't realize it had been over 10 years since we last stayed at the All-Star Sports. I deferred to her wishes and we checked in at the All-Star. Also one of our Disney rules is to never stay at the same resort twice in a row. We enjoy trying all the resorts. Sometimes we rent points and stay at a DVC property. We just try to get the best deal we can find and move around the various resorts.

We got a great room in 10 Touchdown on the back side and very close to Stadium Hall. A bunch of cheerleader groups were staying there but they practiced in the front of the building, so were never heard them! The room was in good shape and everything was neat and pretty. As you may know, the incandescent lights in the All-Star Sports are all 52 watt "GE Watt-Miser®" bulbs. Disney resorts use these bulbs exclusively in the resort properties to save money on electricity. While they have a 10-15% energy cost savings and 33% longer life than standard bulbs, they also produce far less light (i.e. lumens). The standard 60 watt light bulb puts out 840 lumens while the 52 watt light bulb puts out 730 lumens. I am a voracious reader and I really dislike Disney resort lights, so I always bring my own. I replaced all the 52 watt bulbs with 60 watt bulbs with a resultant 15% increase in light output. I could now read in comfort.

Our first stop on Tuesday evening was to get something to eat. We headed for DTD to The Earl of Sandwich. I was really looking forward to eating a good sandwich there, and I was not disappointed. The sandwiches were excellent! I had met up with a group of friends so 12 of us had the good fortune to eat there. Everyone ordered something different and everyone was very pleased with their selection. This is a very good sandwich shop.

We did a little shopping at DTD and visited with some friends over at The Hilton but we didn't want to stay out too late. We wanted to get a good nights rest prior to the first part of our visit to the parks. So, were made sure to get back to the All-Star Sports before midnight so we could get up by at least 8 AM. Let me also mention that I was conducting some informal experiments while at WDW. I had asked early last year in this forum about the performance of T-mobile cell phones at WDW. I never really got a good answer, so I decided to test that aspect myself. Also, my next door neighbor is a serious computer and radio geek. He loaned me a neat little radio frequency spectrum analyzer and I was able to take a bunch of readings. In short, the T-mobile GSM signal pervades the WDW property and it's very strong. If you can't get a signal, your phone is broken.

On Wednesday, 02/09/05, we struck out on our first day at the parks. We used the WDW roulette transportation system when we visit. What? You've never heard of that system? Let me tell you how and why it works. The WDW bus system is good, but it has no set schedule. This "built in" flexibility gives the bus system a wide margin in meeting their performance standards because unlike a train or a plane, you just can't hold them to a time. Most of the time, their system works, but sometimes (every day) they have some rather nasty failures. I've seen guests waiting at a bus stop for over an hour! Several years ago we adopted our current WDW roulette transportation system. You walk out to the bus stop and jump on the first bus you see! We used this system our entire stay and never once did we have to wait more than 5 minutes for a bus nor did we ever have to stand on a bus! During our first day, we're willing to go where the fates allow. This day it was MK!

After we got off the bus at MK, we had to go to Guest Relations to turn in our vouchers for our AP's. There was a small line but we only had to wait about 4 minutes before we were served. We had our ID's so everything went without a hitch. We did overhear some loud mouth lady at the next window inquiring about used tickets she had purchased on eBay. She wanted to know how many days were left on them! The CM told her to try them at the entrance and find out! As we left Guest Relations, that woman was right behind us. After we entered the MK with our new AP's, we watched her. None of the tickets she purchased on eBay worked! When will people learn.

We arose about 8:00 AM on 02/09/05 and it took about an hour to shower and dress. The temperature was very nice in the high 60's so light dress was in order. I decided to wear cargo pants so I could stash all of my equipment (i.e. spectrum analyzer, digital audio recorder, digital camera, batteries, etc.) and not have to go through the dreaded "bag line". I was "wired" with a Sony ICD-ST25 digital recorder along with the Sony ECM-CS10 stereo microphone. I got a lot of good candid recordings. The crowds at MK were rather light so everything but Peter Pan was a walk-on. We got a fast pass for Peter Pan and then did Splash and Big Thunder Mountain and by the time we were done, it was time for Peter Pan. The CM at the head of the fast pass line was cool. As I handed him our fast passes, he looked at my wife and said, "Oh dear, I can tell you are ready to fly!". He was flaming.

CoP was open and running just fine. We saw Stitch and were not impressed. However, after we left Stitch to experience the fury of Mickey's Star Traders, PUSH was running around in there. I saw PUSH attempting to make a "trash-can sandwich" out of several young children. He would wait silently about 3 feet directly across from another trash can. When a small child would walk through the gap, PUSH would rush forward and trap the child between himself and the other can and then laugh manically and yell, "Trash-Can Sandwich".

After we had experienced all the attractions in which we were interested, we got our wrist bands for the Extra Magic 3 Hours at MK, did a little shopping and then had diner at The Crystal Palace. At City Hall, they told us that there was no priority seating left and that The Crystal Palace was full. However, we walked up to the door at The Crystal Palace and were immediately seated without a problem. Of course, the CM's at City Hall also recommended that instead of eating at The Crystal Palace, we should go to Columbia Harbor House. This was at 7:00 PM and Columbia Harbor House had been closed since 5:00 PM. We checked out a few more attractions and then headed back to our room.

As we approached the MK bus stop, the bus for All-Star Music was loading so we got on too. It was a short walk from Music to our room. It was a good day. Since we are not parade or fireworks people, we assiduously avoid these events. Back at the room, I had 20 foot long extension cord that allowed me to hook my digital camera up to the video input (RCA jack) on the back of the TV. The camera has a "slide show" setting that allows all the pictures to be viewed on the TV. So, we sat back with a few drinks and watched the show and then went to bed for the night.

Next....EPCOT....Dude!

nice change of pace in the trip reports, Woody. Since you are a little, uh, unconventional at times, this was a refreshing read!

02/10/05 Epcot

We walked out to the bus stop the next morning and the EPCOT bus was there. We boarded and the bus headed straight for EPCOT. As a matter of fact, all the buses we caught at All-Star Sports went direct to their destinations. None of them went to Music or Movies. At the EPCOT ticket gates, we breezed right through the entrance with no problems. Insert ticket, get finger scan, and pick up ticket on other side of machine. We noticed that most other people had few problems using the new ticket machines and the lines moved quickly. However, you could not help but notice (trip over) a small percentage of people that make it a habit to stop right after they enter the park gates. It seems to always be people with strollers or those electric carts that cause this recurrent problem. We know to expect this so we always zig and zag around these entry impediments.

Since EPCOT is the park that is the center of the total Disney property, then this area would be the place to expect weak T-mobile cell phone coverage if indeed they do not have antenna(s) on property. Let me assure you that the T-mobile GSM signal was strong throughout the entire park. Therefore, they do have antenna(s) on property or they are sharing with another provider.

All the attractions were walk-ons. There was a little chill in the air this Thursday so I think the locals didn't turn out. However, it was still short sleeve weather for me because I really enjoy cool weather. We did Energy, Mission Space and Test Track in short order and then hit Figment and Honey I Shrunk the Audience. I decided to save The Living Seas for later in the day. Early in the day, I developed a cramp in my lower right leg that persisted most of the day.

The World Showcase was fun. We saw Off Kilter and the movie in Canada. The Soarin' show building behind Canada was very impressive and it appeared to me that it will be easy to block the view of this structure if and when they desire to do so. I took a couple of pictures of the buildings in the UK and then did the movie in France. We had to dash by Morocco and Japan so we could catch the next showing of The American Adventure. We then backtracked to both Morocco and Japan. I was getting hungry, so it became turkey leg time for me! The other members of my party ate at Italy (I think?). It didn't take me long to finish my turkey leg, so while the others were still at lunch, I took several frequency measurements at the far south end of EPCOT and some more pictures. I met up with the others and we finished up with the other pavilions within the World Showcase and did some shopping. I was disappointed with the gift shop in China. They did not have Foojoy Oolong Tea. Heck, you can buy this stuff most anyplace, but I prefer to purchase my supply at the China Pavilion in the World Showcase! I noticed that the gift shop had reduced their inventory on the sales floor. Oh well.

Now, it was time to see Turtle Talk with Crush! We went straight to The Living Seas. Crush was super good, just as I knew it would be! Don't miss this attraction...Dude! I don't want to tell you about this attraction except to say that small children are not really surprised that Crush can see them and carry on a conversation. They just accept it as being normal. The adults in the audience are blown away! They have no idea how this attraction works. You must experience it yourself. Some idiot failed to put his cell phone in silent mode and during the show the phone went off! Crush didn't miss a beat and yelled, "Hey Dude, answer your shell phone!".

We did Spaceship Earth and as usual, it was fun. We then went over to the Art of Disney Epcot Gallery. Since we were going to go to Disney-MGM Studios in the next day or two, I asked the artist (i.e. "real artist") at the Art of Disney shop if the artists working The Magic of Disney Animation (at Disney-MGM Studios) were still "real" artists. He replied, that due to position reclassification and pay cuts, the CM's working that show are no longer artists. I'll tell you more about this when I visit Disney-MGM Studios later in the trip report.

We then decided to ride the monorail. While on the monorail, we were surprised to meet up with some friends that we knew from our time spent in Arizona back in the 1970's. So, It's a Small World was not closed for us after all! We decided to have dinner with them at 'Ohana and had a great meal there. Even though neither of us had Priority Seating, they seated us as soon as we walked up to the door. We had a great time catching up on old times. However, I wanted to get back to our room by 10:00 PM so that I could watch "Primetime" on ABC. They were doing a show about "John of God", a Brazilian faith healer.

When we got back to our room at the All-Star Sports, there was a huge fruit basket on the table! I didn't check out the card right away since I was too busy setting up the TV for the show I wanted to see. After watching the TV show, I read the card that came with the fruit basket. It was from the DVC! Remember how I told you that I had just paid off my mortgage? Well, the DVC found out too. The enclosed card said in part, "There's no better time to own at the Saratoga Springs Resort. Now that your home mortgage is gone, you qualify for special low financing on a DVC membership." Included was a salesman's name and number to call for a special tour. I couldn't help but think that I had just been double teamed by charlatans. I ate one of the huge oranges before I went to bed and it seemed to help my leg cramp so perhaps the DVC does have some medicinal power and worth after all.

Next....Disney-MGM Studios

I like your description of bus roulette, but with your description of direct runs straight from your All Stars resort to the park (without stops at the other 2 All Stars Resorts), your bus service sounds first rate. Perhaps I have unfairly maligned the All Stars transportation . . . Nah!

Great report. I can't wait to read about the cast members at the Studios animation attraction - artists or aren'tists?

Me too! I don't ever remember the All-Star Resorts bus transportation being this good. Perhaps we were just lucky or Invero or niteobserver can explain. We always expect the MK bus to make a straight run to the park but now the others seem to be doing this as well, at least prior to 11 AM.

02/11/05 Disney-MGM Studios

Got out to the bus stop early and noticed that most people were headed for MK for the morning EMH. We, instead went to the studios. During the morning and early afternoon we did all of the attractions. With one exception, there were no or minimal wait times. However, we did run into one problem with The Little Mermaid.

After we entered the park, we went directly to The Great Movie Ride. We got the second car (gangster) and the show was very good. We then went over to The Little Mermaid. We have a rule, if the standby line is 30 minutes or less, then we go standby. If the wait is longer, we get a fastpass. Unfortunately, the standby time sign was not working and the fastpass machines were down as well. I asked a CM when the next show would be and she replied, "I don't know". We decided to come back later and try again.

We next did The Magic of Disney Animation. Like many of you, we too were very curious to find out if "real" artists were still working this attraction. The answer we got was yes and no. Based upon information we got from several CM's on site, the artist you get at the end of the tour might in fact be a real artist or they could be a tracer. It seems that in the original contract that Disney had with the CM's at this attraction, it required that these CM's in fact must be trained artists. That contract has been recently renegotiated and now artists are now longer required to fill those positions. Disney may now, at their sole discretion, put anyone they desire in those positions regardless of their artistic training or ability. As it was explained to me, your chances of getting an artist or a tracer are about 50/50 on any given day. Gradually, the artists will be totally phased out of the attraction, unless the artists are willing to take a pay cut to stay. That's the basic gist of what I was told.

We then went back to The Little Mermaid and we were told that the next show would be in 1 1/2 hours! Something fishy was going on here! We again decided to come back later. We moved on to One Man's Dream and the Backlot Tour. Both were great fun! The Backlot Tour has been shortened a good deal with the construction of LMAESS, but the essentials are still intact. We then did Muppet*Vision 3-D. There was no wait, however, we talked to several guests that told us that queue at this attraction had been horrendously long just prior to our arrival. Rumor was circulating that some sort of computer malfunction had messed up several of the queues in the park. So, that might explain the problem with Mermaid! Muppet's was great, as usual!

We had lunch at the Brown Derby (Cobb Salad for me) and then wanted to see Beauty and the Beast but the first show of the day wasn't until 1:15 PM, so we knocked out ToT and RnR first. We then did Beauty and the Beast and it was a great show. We then did a little more shopping, I took some more photos and we went back to see Mermaid, again. The fasspast machines were up and running but I also noticed that the standby line was rather short and then, the theater doors opened up! It was a walk-on!

We then decided to leave the park. We took the boat to Epcot and then the monorail to MK before we caught the bus back to the room.

How can you not respect this? Show me anyone else's trip report that has the following words in it: lumens, voracious, radio frequency spectrum analyzer, assidously, and the list goes on. Come on, this is classic and makes for a good read!

Animal Kingdom 02/12/05

We walked from our room to the bus stop and, like magic, the AK bus was there! We boarded the bus and it went straight to AK without stops at Music or Movies. The crowds we very low at AK and there were no waits in line for any attraction. We went to Kilimanjaro Safaris first thing. We took advantage of the Extra Magic Morning Hours so we were in the park by 8:00 AM. The animals on the safari were still asleep! I have been on the safari many times before and I have never before experienced a time when the animals seemed so lifeless and motionless. To be honest, I was disappointed, but not for very long!

It is our habit, when we get off the safari vehicle to walk up the path and to the right because this takes you to the backside of the gorilla enclosure. We saw a big silver back gorilla lounging about within perfect camera range. I didn't have to vi for position with other guests. We had him all to ourselves! Therefore, I shot an entire 256 MB memory card on this guy and used up one of my batteries. We went straight to the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail and just as I suspected, the other gorillas were very active as well. I used up another memory card and another battery on these guys. I thought to myself that if barnum42 was there, he would have used up 10 memory cards and 10 batteries! It was just a wonderful experience. We had never seen the gorillas so active plus we didn't have to wade through big crowds to see them. It was the best.

We spent a lot of time with the gorillas, so by now it was time for lunch! We ate at Tusker House and I got the grilled salmon and it was delicious. I often make grilled salmon at home by grilling the salmon on a cedar board on my gas grill. My wife ate the Turkey Wrap with the Corn Chowder. The food at Tusker House is about the best on property. It tastes great and it's healthy too!

We next did Rafiki's Planet Watch. I am not a big fan of this attraction but I do enjoy the train and I enjoy seeing the walking, talking trash can that works at Conservation Station. He's related to "PUSH". Unfortunately, he (I think his name is "Pippa" best I recall) was not there, so we moved along and took the train back to Harambe.

We walked down the trail toward Flights of Wonder when I saw Davine! None of the other guests had seen her until I started to take a few photos with my camera. Davine slowly revealed her face and I got some great shots of her. However, I missed the best shot of all. When I first started to take photos of Davine, the other guests thought I was daft. But then, one by one, the other guests began to "see" Davine too. A woman jumped in front of me and pulled out her camera. Davine saw this activity. Davine then rapidly walked across the path on her stilts and bent down to stare right in that woman's face! Davine was so close to the woman that she couldn't take the picture. I was so fascinated watching Davine do this, that I forgot to take a picture! Davine then slowly retreated back across the path to blend in with a pole!

We continued on and experienced Flights of Wonder, KRR and MJT. The tigers at MJT were not too active but with cats you just have to catch them during their "kitty crazy" times. We had not seen EE since construction first began so we were pleased to see the new bridge and pathway. It's obvious why Tarzan Rocks will have to close when EE starts up. We had a fun time on Dinosaur but we always avoid the rest of DinoLand U.S.A. like the bubonic plague.

It was now time for my favorite, It's Tough To Be a Bug! Great show. I love to watch the audience as they squirm and jump in reaction to all of the FX treatments. Since I first saw this attraction, I have been of the opinion that it is the best on property. The queue is great because it's all down hill and picking out all the "carvings" on The Tree of Life is a show in itself. The preshow is themed perfectly in a dark tree stump, just as if you were indeed a bug! The Broadway music takeoffs and posters are very funny. This show is Disney at its finest with wonderful ledgerdomain!

We then hit some of the gift shops and purposely missed Festival of the Lion King. We really dislike that show so we don't torture ourselves. Went back to the safari for another 2 week trip but again the animals must have been sedated that day. We then decided to go back to the resort. I was sorry that we didn't see the trash can or Wes Palm, but we'll look forward to them on another trip!

First of all, I have seen the show 2 times, both before and after it was enclosed. I dislike theater in the round unless there is a real purpose for using this technique and they struggle in a mighty but still failed attempt to make it work. It's a parade on stage! The lighting and audio of this show is terrible IMO. Festival of the Lion King uses audience participation way too much! Jugglers and acrobats are used in place of any story development.

It reminds me of ToD! I really disliked that one too. I consider these shows to be insipid. At least with FoTLK you must visit the site to see it. With ToD you had to watch the lousy parade if you desired to walk the World Showcase at night.

Thank you for letting me vent! :lookaroun

Great report Woody......Looks like you had a good day at DAK.

:sohappy:

All the guys and gals on Kilimanjaro Safaris were just great! Our host on the 2 week stay was a little disappointed with our vehicle's group reaction to saying "goodbye". He said, "Next time I expect a little more enthusiasm people". It was a great line in consideration of the animal activity decline!

Thanks Woody....It's rough out there sometimes. You have to step it up when there is not that great of an animal show. When there are great animal shows then you just step back and enjoy it.

I agree on the audience participation in FoLK. I think that audience participation is used WAY too much at WDW. It always feels so forced. You know the general, "You can do better than that." :brick:

Okay - dumb question here - Did I read you correct when you said Tarzan Rocks is going to have to shut down when EE opens? I've never heard that! That makes me so sad - TR is our favorite show by a longshot! I love that one... does anyone know if they are just moving it - or are they shutting it down for good?

Thanks for the help in advance -

And Woody~ wonderful report - very descriptive - I felt like I was back in WDW! :D
