Trip Report: 5/31 & 6/1

Hello all!! Here's another trip report. :) I apologize in advance if this gets a bit long in reading it. And there may be possible spoilers...

Friday 5/31: "Six times??!?!!?!? and WOW!!!!"

Got down to Orlando after a 6.5 hour drive from Atlanta [a bit fast, I admit] and checked into my hotel at about 10:45am. Was staying off property [please don't hit me...haha]. Took care of a few personal errands I had waiting for me and was able to head over to the parks about 6pm that evening. Met friends at MGM and hit my first stop - Tower of Terror.

As we ambled over to it, we happened across one of the "Street-mosphere" CM's, Ms Greta Garbage, and had a fun time chatting with her.

At TOT, hardly had a line to wait in. I think the rain storm that went through about an hour before I got there had something to do with that. TOT seemed like an old friend again...nice, dusty, but hardly any "in character" CM interaction. What caught me off guard was that I was expecting only three drops in the lift. Then I felt a fourth, a fifth, then a sixth. I guess I know where the Tower of MORE Terror comes from. Between the first and second drops, if you look to the lower left of the opening in the liftcar, you can barely make out a little scene with the girl from the elevator playing in either a hallway or her room. Neat little touch that. [I even remember riding this when there was only one drop designed in it...]

From there, went over to RnR for my first time ever. Again, not long of a wait at all in line; thanks to people lining up for Fantasmic I think. All I can say here is...WOW!!!! For the preshow, one can tell that it's a video we're watching of the band getting ready to leave...but, after riding the coaster, one can't complain too much about that. :) RnR now ranks as one of my favorite coasters. [I got on the "Sweet Emotion" set of cars.]

After yelling my fool head off on both TOT and RnR, I was feeling a bit parched. I stopped at the Turkey Leg booth near both rides and had an "un-Disney-like" experience. Had waited about 10 minutes to even place my order for a soda...the booth seemed like it was in chaos. Another one who was in line before I got there had place his order for beer and had been waiting about 15 minutes to get it. As he was mentioning this, I saw them bring in a new keg and then he was all set. I got my soda shortly afterwards with no "Sorry for the wait" or anything. [::sigh::]

Walked around the MGM park a bit, wishing the monstrosity of the hat had been handled differently, and took a turn on the Great Movie Ride. Like what a couple of others on here have observed, the GMR is nearing the point of being "tired". It was even reflected in the CM who was our "guide" and the CM who took over for a bit in the 1920's Gangland sequence. I guess the best way I can describe it is that it seemed cheesy; and it was cheese that had been left out way too long. On a happier note, the film montage at the end had some new clips added to it.

Since I didn't feel like fighting for a seat at Fantasmic, I went back to my hotel...and ended the night with seeing my first Nahtazu commercial on network TV [we don't get these in Atlanta].

Saturday 6/1: Diving into a sea of red

Spent the day at the MK...and I'll freely admit that I was one of the many wearing red shirts for the purpose of GayDay. I was surprised that the local reps of the Baptists or "Family Coalition" groups weren't there along the roadside protesting. Either times have changed or people's mindsets are maturing. None the less, I enjoyed the feeling of being like everyone else for a day.

My friends and I caught a couple of photo-ops with characters in front of City Hall and then made our way to grab FastPasses for Big Thunder. While waiting for our times, jumped on Splash Mountain and got dampened. :) Big Thunder seemed as fast as when I last rode it...so not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Went for a ride on Mansion...didn't notice any sound problems in my doombuggy...and things looked as good as ever on there.

Saw the Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management for the first time this trip. It was cute, but since I hardly remember what it was like beforehand [many a year since I last did this attraction] I didn't have a good base to compare and contrast with.

Went windowshopping for a little while to spend time before catching the showing of CBJ near 1pm [which was a preset time to have an audience mostly of hirsute gentlemen around]. I believe it was the original show and the only "whoopsie" I noticed was that the first time the EmCee bear introduces an act [forgive me for not knowing his name, GrizzlyHall] his volume was a bit muffled. Outside of that, everything looked rather well kept.

Got FastPasses for Peter Pan [75 minute wait...and it had a line each time we walked by there] and got lunch at the old Tomorrowland Terrace [the current name escapes me]. The character set-up on the stage makes the place feel like a Chuck E Cheese's now...bummer. :(

Did a bit of shopping at Auntie Gravity's and we got in line for the TTA. The entire audio track from after Space Mountain, along the theater area and beyond was silent. Neither CoP nor Time Keeper were running [but the MK had the crowds to support it]. After TTA, went on Buzz for the first time. Cute little ride; I scored 37,700 for a newbie. I still miss the Eastern attraction, If You Had Wings... [::sigh::]

Had a couple of newbies with my gang of friends, and we got them on Alien Encounter. They enjoyed it. When the water spritzes you on the back of your neck, one of my friends thought that the person behind him had tossed their cookies...hehehehe. About the rumors concerning changing AE to adapt for Stitch...the only way I can see for them to do this is to have Stitch stand in for Skippy in the preshow. But, since I purposely stayed away from asking CM's about rumors and whatnot, I really don't know.

Our time for Peter Pan came near...jumped on that and had a nice time reminiscing with memories. Two things: the ride itself seemed to be moving a little faster than I remember and there seemed to be an audio track missing from the opening scene in the bedroom where Peter gets the kids to follow him off to Neverland. Could be my memory though...

Got FP's for Pooh and then went against a promise I had made to myself. I went on It's A Small World. It's still way to sugary sweet and cute...and to combat that effect, I guess, I was having Cartman's big song from the South Park film getting stuck in my head ["Kyle's Mom..."]. One thing that I found as a saving grace was that the volume in this attraction was lower than before...

Time came to use our Pooh FP's...and while waiting to be spliced in line, I saw a most unique Hidden Mickey. I did take a picture of it and will post it to the board when I get my film developed. I doubt anyone else will find it. :) <eg> I found Pooh to be a cute attraction, found the homage to Toad in it. Nice little ride effects with bouncing along with Tigger and swaying along with the flood. I, too, miss Toad...

Got some more cheesiness in with a spin on Jungle Cruise. :) But unlike GMR from the night before, JC is a classical cheese that is enjoyable depending on how the captain delivers his/her puns and jokes. The one we had did well.

Then ambled to Pirates for a bit of classical Disney. It was like visiting an old friend. And no matter how many times he tried, one of my friends [Timebear on here] was not able to get George to stop the ride. I, personally, think that the CM's just didn't catch his attempts. ;)

Went and tried out Goofy's Barnstormer. It's a neat little coaster for the younger set. My friends then when for a character Meet & Greet at the store in Mickey's ToonTown while I sat and rested my feet. I lost out on this one as they had a CM who took a couple extra moments after a general appearance and let them get a group shot of them with the attending Pooh characters. [**pout**]

Ended the evening with catching Space Mountain twice [hardly a wait both times] and then took the ferry back to TTC and caught the closing fireworks from the boat.

Overall -- All the listed wait times seemed in excess of what they really were and using FastPass was quite an easy thing to do. Also, considering the "non-event" I was there for, there weren't any "scenes" between the GayDay attendees and the rest of the guests. I did overhear an early teenage girl ask about the red shirts and what GayDay was...that was about it. It was nice to see all behaving themselves and enjoying the day with their friends and loved ones.

Again...sorry for the HUGE post. And I do promise to get my Hidden Mickey pic from Pooh up as soon as I get the film developed.

Thanks for reading...

Sounds Like you had a great trip. I did most of the things at MK the same day as you. Wonder if we bumped into each other. When are you coming back?

Thanks, Passport...I did have a nice trip. After spending the day Sunday at IOA, all I did for Monday was collapse at my hotel.

We could very well have be near to bumping into each other...though with all the people there, who can say.

My next planned visit is for October of this year.

If you PM me or somehow get me an email off board [and if interested] we can swap pics and see if we remember seeing each other at MK.

Til next time,

Joe

Thanks for the great report. Like you, I also feel like visiting an old friend when I'm in a classic ride, too bad you don't feel the same about GMR. And it's a pity Disney is forcing Guests to forget CoP. With the park full as you say, people could have easily shown them they still love the attraction.

Missed it

This is the first year I missed gay day in about six years. I've pretty bumbed-out about it . . . But your post made me smile and reminise too -- thanks for sharing. See ya there next year!

Joe,

Your trip sounds like it was a blast. Thanks for my Disney fix for the day. Your descriptions made me feel like I was there with you. I am so glad that there weren't any "incidents". I too wanted to know what Gay Day was (as per a post I responded 2) and didn't know what it was about or that it even happened. After it was explained to me I got the picture. Hey it was early and I'm blonde. LOL My daughter and I will aslo be going in October. Have you ever been there that time of year before? If so, what are the crowds like? I am going the 3rd - 7th. Thanks again for your great trip report:) :D

You are quite welcome, MK...and thank you for the comments.

I remember when GMR was fairly new...and back then I thought it was a neat little attraction; though mostly unremarkable for additional ridethroughs. I know that it's supposed to show off well-known scenes from classical films...I guess that I'm one who feels that more could be done with the attraction. [**shrug**]

I feel the same as you do about CoP...I missed watching the times change and being asked to "march along in the parade".

You are quite welcome, DonaldFan...it's my pleasure to have found this board and have the opportunity to share my experiences. I can empathize, though, with the feeling of missing the event. I grew up in Florida [3 years in Key West and 23 years in Tampa Bay]. Thanks to my parents, I pretty much went to Disney at least once a year [first time we made the drive up from the keys during the MK's first year of operation].

Before this last visit, I attended GayDay 92, 93 and 95. The only reason I've missed them til now was my moving from Tampa Bay to Atlanta in 97. So...it was time I got myself down there to partake of the event again.

I am happy to hear that reading my report brought a smile and happy memories to you. And hope to see you there next year as well.

Toodles

It was a blast...thank you. And you are more than welcome for the Disney fix I provided. It was my pleasure to be able to share my experiences on this recent trip.

Am also happy to learn that your honest curiousity about the event was properly informed. If you should happen to have any other questions you believe I might be able to help with, please feel free to PM me or drop me an email through here to let me know.

I have been to the parks before during late Summer/early Fall. From what I remember: during the week, the crowds are very manageable as kids are in school and there are no long holiday weekends that time of year. The weekends will probably see an increase as the weather then is fairly nice [high 80's, maybe low 90's]. But don't let that phase you...since you are taking a few days to see WDW, just pace yourself and take your time to enjoy the sights.

JoeZerboy,

Thank you for the wonderful trip report! I was heartened to see that you got to hit all of the "highlights" on your MK visit. When we were there last year (on Gay Day), it was so crowded at MK that we went over to MGM. Sounds like it was more manageble this year; Fastpass really does make a difference! :)

You are very welcome, TM. And thank you for the comments. More than likely, the crowds were "manageable" due to tourism getting slowly back up to speed and the use of FastPass. Since I don't live locally to Orlando, I doubt I'll hear what the estimated figures were for those attending GayDay...

Take care,

Joe

This was my 7th GayDay, and by far the most enjoyable. I think the crowds on both side are maturing. I found myself cringing last year from some of the outfits and the attitude of our red shirt crowd, and from some of the comments made about them. This year everyone seemed to remember that Disney is a family park and behaved appropriately.

I was actually there for four days (Wed-Sat) and stayed at Port Orleans Riverside. I guess I've been to Disney enough times that I'm starting to enjoy the little things, like the boat ride from the hotel to Downtown Disney. I also got to play the Fantasia Mini-Golf for the first time! Also, I was on the PeopleMover (TTA) when Space Mountain shut down, so I got to see Space Mountain with the lights turned up. And, since I finally broke down and bought a digital camera, I got to take all the pictures I've ever wanted, and ended up with close to 600.

The only disappointment for me was the Timekeeper. I was hoping the Magic Kingdom would be busy enough for it to be open, and I think it was, but they still didn't open it. After talking to a cast member at MGM, I don't think it's ever going to re-open. Dammit.

Thank you...

I wanted to drop a thank you to all for their replies and comments about my recent trip report. After reading the vitriolic threads within the last couple of months about GayDay in general, I was slightly trepidatious about posting the report and including that information.

After seeing how many hits this thread has received and reading the posts of those kind enough to supply them, I am happy that I did log my report and see that the earlier threads are not the norm in thinking on here.

Thanks again, to all...

Cool to hear on all counts, Gary. For all the times I've been to WDW, I've never stayed on property. Until my move from Florida, all my visits were daytrips. Now, when I do get down there, I find it easier on the wallet to stay off-site at a nearby hotel [I can usually find some pretty good deals by looking on hotelcoupons.com]...and since I usually drive down, I have a car at the ready to get me around. :) But, from what everyone has been saying on here, I may have to look into staying onsite for next year...

I've not had the chance yet to experience Timekeeper, so I don't know what I'm missing...that can either be a good thing or a bad thing [haha]. But, as inferred elsewhere on here, don't believe everything you hear through a CM unless it is backed up with uncontrivertable proof. ;)

Thank you for your reply and comments, Gary. Hope the day goes well for ya.

Hey there, DMC-12!

Yep...doing a ride along spoof based on Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride would've been quite easy to do given the make up of the crowds that day. LOL

And I do believe that there is a lion in one of the Africa scenes along the ride...

Thank you for the email and the comments. You are quite welcome and am glad to hear you enjoyed reading it.

What caught me off guard was that I was expecting only three drops in the lift. Then I felt a fourth, a fifth, then a sixth. I guess I know where the Tower of MORE Terror comes from.

The new drop sequence SUX.

There isn't one good DROP. You bounce up and down in short little bursts. Most of the drops are in broad day light. The best part of the ride was dropping in the dark. Now, between the wide open elevator doors and the LAME lightening effects. It's lost it's punch. I was very dissapointed in these new changes.

Another huge let down was the GMR. I hadn't ridden it in Years, but brought friends to see it. Since the gansters car doesn't move, the scene is painfully boring. The bank doesn't blow up, leaving another dull scene. I didn't see ANY aliens, and Sigorney STILL looks like Paul McCartney. The film, montage was a little better. What was supposed to be thrilling and heartwarming attraction, is just sleepy. It's about as exciting as a WAX museum.
