Anyone have any ideas what price the TransAtlantic from Galveston is coming in at??

Disney Cruise Line website has them. I looked and inside stateroom deck 5 or 6 was only $2,3xx. Seems really inexpensive to me for 14 nights all inclusive.

Yeah that's what I was thinking!
Even with $2000 airfare it's still coming in $2000 cheaper than the 12 night Med Cruises...

The Transatlantics always seem to be a good deal. Partly because it's one way, which many people don't like, and partly becaue of the length when it's during the school year.

Yeah. I looked at the price of the TA vs the canal and the difference was a lot. The May canal trip is still during the school year. I wasn't expecting it to get so high so fast. Either way, unless Tracey can negotiate a direct position in the next year at work we won't be able to be gone for such a long stretch. The lost wages would be as much as the trip. :lookaroun

Oh! And I called my dad to ask him what he thought would be more enjoyable since he's been to all those places. He said he'd pick the transatlantic. Interesting.

Quick question, what airport would be best to fly into if going on the transatlantic??

Sailing out of Galveston? Houston Hobby (HOU) is waaaay closer but it's not an international airport. Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is the other option but it's on the opposite side of Houston. If traffic is bad during the week it could easily top 3 hours drive time. Weekends could be worse because they close sections for construction all the time. Not as many airlines fly into Hobby but it's a much smaller airport & it's right there on the way down to Galveston.

Sweetpee to the rescue. Galveston's own website says Houston Hobby Field is 40 miles from Galveston, and is on the south side of Houston. It also says Bush Field is 70 miles from Galveston, and is on the north side of Houston, and thus further away than Hobby. Having driven neither, and presuming Sweetpee has, I'd trust those time estimates. Only question I would have is if Hobby is not intercontinental but Bush is, can flights fly directly into Hobby from overseas or do passengers have to fly into an intercontinental airport in, for example, another state, and maybe transfer to a domestic flight to Hobby?

I'm very familiar with the area and I've flown out of both airports. I'm also pretty familiar with Galveston since it's close and we've been there lots for fun day things to do. We've even gone over and stayed the night a few times just for a little weekend getaway.

If you look at a map you'll see that Intercontinental is north of the city center while Hobby is more on the southeast side which is right in line with the route down to Galveston. You hop on I-45 and it's a quick zip down to the island. Not having to pass thru the middle of Houston is huge. I don't know who makes the decisions for their highway systems but, man, it's BAD. I hate it. Was just there yesterday. Ick.

Unfortunately it looks like Hobby does not have international flights. It is, however, Southwest Airline's main hub. Southwest owns AirTran and ATA which are both listed as airlines that operate there. I think American was on the list, too. Prior to the merge with United, I know Continental's main hub was Intercontinental. We're not exactly sure what changes have taken place since those two merged. I'm sure it will remain one of their larger hubs if they move away from using it as their primary. For those coming in from other countries maybe fly into a large international airport then catch a flight from there to Hobby. I personally prefer to fly Southwest whenever we can because they don't charge for baggage like the others do. I could do without their cattle-call boarding procedures but it's not a deal-breaker. Southwest always seems to be more laid-back and fun, we've had some hilarious experiences with their cabin crew. :D

Lemme know if you have any other questions. I'll try to help as much as possible. :wave:

It's crazy! I could go on the 14-day TA for what I'd pay to do an 8-day western out of Galveston. :lol:

How about this;

I can do the TA cruise and pay for TA flights to the states and book some excursions and Palo for less than a 12 night cruise only on the Med :eek::lol:
